This paper presents a general procedure for a rate-type creep analysis (based on the use of the continuous retardation spectrum) which avoids the need of recalculating the Kelvin chain stiffness elements at each time step. In this procedure are incorporated three different creep constitutive relations, two recommended by national codes such as the ACI (North-American) and EC2 (European) building codes and one by the RILEM research association. The approximate expressions of the different creep functions with the corresponding Dirichlet series are generated using the continuous retardation spectrum approach based on the Post–Widder formula. The proposed rate-type formulation is implemented into a 3D finite element code and applied to study the long-term deflections of a prestressed concrete bridge built in Romania, which crosses a wide artificial channel that connects the Danube river to the port of Constanta in the Black Sea.

Black Sea sprat Sprattus sprattus phalericus (Risso, 1826) is one of the abundant species of fish in the Sea of Azov – Black Sea basin. Due to its large number sprat plays an extremely important role in the ecosystem of the sea, being an intermediate link between zooplankton and representatives of the highest trophic level – large predatory fish, dolphins, and birds. At the same time sprat is one of the important commercial fish in all the Black Sea countries, steadily being on the second place of catch volume in recent decades (after anchovy). The total catch reaches 100 thousand tons. Turkey and Ukraine are the main producing countries. Monitoring and forecast of biological state of sprat population with rising fishing intensity and climate changes are urgent tasks. The research subject of this article is the long-term (2000–2016) dynamics of biological (qualitative) parameters determining the population fecundity of Black Sea sprat in Crimean region, the current state of reproductive potential, and the conditions for its formation. The article is based on the results of own research. Parameters determining the population fecundity – the length-age structure of the spawning part population, the absolute individual fecundity, and the sex structure population (ratio between females and males) – were studied. In the long-term plan (in 2011–2016 compared with 2000–2004) the average length of spawning females decreased by 1.22 times (from 7.36 to 6.03 cm). It was accompanied by a decrease in the absolute individual fecundity by 2.39 times (from 13 625 to 5690 eggs). The numerical ratio between females and males decreased by 1.23 times (from 1.95 to 1.59). Simultaneously the sprat stock in the northern part of the Black Sea was reduced by more than 2.5 times (from > 500 thousand tons to < 200 thousand tons). As a result, the population fecundity of sprat in Crimean region decreased by more than 7 times (2.39 × 1.23 × 2.5). The conditions of sprat fishing in the northern part of the Black Sea (from the mouth of the Danube River to the Kerch Strait) were studied. They showed 2-fold decrease (from 251.9 thousand tons in 2000–2004 to 129.1 thousand tons in 2011–2016) in the total catch and more than 2.3-fold decrease (from 50.4 to 21.4 thousand tons) in average annual catch in this region. On the contrary, in the Crimean shelf the total catch at that time increased by 1.2 times (from 76.9 to 92.2 thousand tons), and its average annual value remained constant (15.4 thousand tons). While reducing the stock by 2.5 times, this means that the fishing pressure on the Crimean population increased 2.5 times. This fact suggests considering the factor of fishing as the main cause of its degradation. Validity of this version is confirmed by the fact of conjugacy (inverse connection) of interannual fluctuations between the catch and the length-age parameters of sprat in Crimean region in 2003–2013 previously found: catches over 15–16 thousand tons were accompanied by a next year decrease in the fish average length. Regulation of fishing is a necessary condition for preventing further degradation, for restoring and maintaining sustainable state of sprat population in Crimean region and its reproductive potential. The negative impact of natural (climatic and trophic) factors on the state of the population should be recognized as a secondary one. Local overfishing indicates indirectly the structuring of the commercial stock of Black Sea sprat, its division into a number of geographical aggregations (stock units), i. e. the presence of intraspecific differentiation.

In this paper, a finite element model for efficient nonlinear analysis of the mechanical response of viscoelastic beams is presented. The principle of virtual work is utilized in conjunction with the third-order beam theory to develop displacement-based, weak-form Galerkin finite element model for both quasi-static and fully-transient analysis. The displacement field is assumed such that the third-order beam theory admits C0 Lagrange interpolation of all dependent variables and the constitutive equation can be that of an isotropic material. Also, higher-order interpolation functions of spectral/hp type are employed to efficiently eliminate numerical locking. The mechanical properties are considered to be linear viscoelastic while the beam may undergo von Kármán nonlinear geometric deformations. The constitutive equations are modeled using Prony exponential series with general n-parameter Kelvin chain as its mechanical analogy for quasi-static cases and a simple two-element Maxwell model for dynamic cases. The fully discretized finite element equations are obtained by approximating the convolution integrals from the viscous part of the constitutive relations using a trapezoidal rule. A two-point recurrence scheme is developed that uses the approximation of relaxation moduli with Prony series. This necessitates the data storage for only the last time step and not for the entire deformation history.

The Danube nutrient loads are affected by human impacts mainly from agriculture and wastewater discharges. Knowledge about the Danube nutrient loads and the changes of these loads over time is essential for understanding the changes within the ecosystem of the Black Sea, induced by these loads. The paper shows the long term changes of the nutrient load along the Danube estimated by measurements from different countries and institutions. The results show large differences between Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) and Total Phosphorus (TP). For TP, the Danube River loads show a strong decrease since 1988–1992, especially in the Middle and Lower basin. This change is probably partly connected to the dramatic economic changes in the Middle and Eastern European countries following the collapse of the communist system. The DIN load does not show a decreasing trend in the last decade. The data indicate that there may be a decreasing trend in the anthropogenic emissions, but that such a trend is counteracted by a significantly increasing trend of the Danube discharge in the last decade. The accuracy of the available data is analysed in the paper as well.

A special elasto-plastic dynamic finite element code named RingForm has been developed to analyze cold ring rolling process. Central difference method was introduced to solve the dynamic explicit finite element equations. Strain state was estimated by the value of yield function of the last and the present time step. To reduce the accumulative error caused by elasto-plastic constitutive relations, the radial return algorithm was employed. In comparison with the experimental results, the cold ring rolling process of a ring with rectangular section has been simulated to verify the accuracy and stability of the system solver.

We present a phenomenological three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model for time-dependent analysis. Based on Schapery's single integral constitutive law, a solution procedure has been provided to solve nonlinear viscoelastic behavior. This procedure is applicable to 3D problems and uses time- and stress-dependent material properties to characterize the nonlinear behavior of material. The equations describing material behavior are chosen based on the measured material properties in a short test time frame. This estimation process uses the Prony series material parameters, and the constitutive relations are based on the nonseparable form of equations. Material properties are then modified to include the long-term response of material. The presented model is suitable for the development of a unified computer code that can handle both linear and nonlinear viscoelastic material behavior. The proposed viscoelastic model is implemented in a user-defined material algorithm in abaqus (UMAT), and the model validity is assessed by comparison with experimental observations on polyethylene for three uniaxial loading cases, namely short-term loading, long-term loading, and step loading. A part of the experimental results have been conducted by (Liu, 2007, “Material Modelling for Structural Analysis of Polyethylene,” M.Sc. thesis, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON Canada), while the rest are provided by an industrial partner. The research shows that the proposed finite element model can reproduce the experimental strain–time curves accurately and concludes that with proper material properties to reflect the deformation involved in the mechanical tests, the deformation behavior observed experimentally can be accurately predicted using the finite element simulation.

Long-term (20032014) routine observations of zooplankton in Sevastopol Bay (the Black Sea) have allowed the naturalization of the invasive copepod Oithona davisae to be studied in the Black Sea coastal waters. Inter-annual and seasonal variability of the species and their impact on the native copepod community have been analyzed. The invasion of O. davisae and their undoubted dominance in terms of abundance were shown to alter the community structure but, at the same time, the abundances of the native species did not decrease, excepting the Black Sea earlier invader Acartia tonsa. A significant decline in A. tonsa numbers over the stages of O. davisae establishment and naturalization provided evidence of competition between the species. O. davisae have been demonstrated to gain competitive advantage over A. tonsa, that ensured their fast dispersal in the Black Sea, acclimatization in the new habitat and the successful competition over native species.

The Programme has the objective of providing a regional approach to environmental management in the Danube River Basin where there is great pressure from a diverse range of human activities. Serious pollution problems exist from urban populations, from industry, and from intensive agricultural practices. Although the water quality of the main Danube river is probably better than the Rhine because of its greater flow, the same is not the case in the tributaries where there the problems are more serious. A factor which makes a compelling case for a regional approach is the deterioration of the Black Sea into which the main Danube river discharges significant loads of nutrients and a range of non-degradable contaminants. The application of limited financial resources will require fine judgement about the high priority pollution sources that will lead to cost-effective improvements. This action, and other technical assistance, also requires a considerable effort to strengthen the organisations having responsibility for environmental management, and to develop effective public participation. The paper emphasises the water pollution problems in the river basin.
