Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure for the treatment of kidney stones. Traditionally, RIRS is usually performed by reconstructing a 3D model of the kidney from preoperative CT images in order to locate the kidney stones; then, the surgeon finds and removes the stones with experience in endoscopic video. However, due to the many branches within the kidney, it can be difficult to relocate each lesion and to ensure that all branches are searched, which may result in the misdiagnosis of some kidney stones. To avoid this situation, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based method for matching preoperative CT images and intraoperative videos for the navigation of ureteroscopic procedures. First, a pair of synthetic images and depth maps reflecting preoperative information are obtained from a 3D model of the kidney. Then, a style transfer network is introduced to transfer the ureteroscopic images to the synthetic images, which can generate the associated depth maps. Finally, the fusion and matching of depth maps of preoperative images and intraoperative video images are realized based on semantic features. Compared with the traditional CT-video matching method, our method achieved a five times improvement in time performance and a 26% improvement in the top 10 accuracy.

Abstract The article presents new conception of 3D model of human bronchial tubes, which represents bronchial tubes extracted from CT images of the chest. The new algorithm which generates new model is an extension of the algorithm (basic algorithm) proposed by Hiroko Kitaoka, Ryuji Takaki and Bela Suki. The basic model has been extended by geometric deformations of branches and noise which occur in bronchial trees extracted from CT images. The article presents comparison of results obtained with the use of the new algorithm and the basic one. Moreover, the discussion of usefulness of generated new models for testing of algorithms for quantitative analysis of bronchial tubes based on CT images is also included.

Background: Advances in micro-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for kidney stones have made it an alternative approach to the retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) approach. Nevertheless, the superiority of micro-PCNL over RIRS is still under debate. The results are controversial. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to systematically evaluate the clinical results in patients presenting with kidney stones treated with micro-PCNL or RIRS. Methods: A literature search was done for electronic databases to identify researches that compared micro-PCNL and RIRS till December 2019. The clinical outcome included complications, stone-free rates (SFRs), hemoglobin reduction, length of hospital stay, and operative time. Results: Five articles were included in our study. The pooled results revealed no statistical difference in the rate of complications (OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.57–1.74, p = 0.99), length of hospital stay (MD = −0.29, 95% CI = −0.82 to 0.24, p = 0.28), and operative time (MD = −6.63, 95% CI = −27.34 to 14.08, p = 0.53) between the 2 groups. However, significant difference was present in hemoglobin reduction (MD = −0.43, 95% CI = −0.55 to 0.30, p < 0.001) and the SFRs (OR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.36–0.98, p = 0.04) when comparing RIRS with micro-PCNL. Conclusions: Compared with micro-PCNL to treat kidney stones, RIRS is associated with better stone clearance and bearing higher hemoglobin loss. As the advantages of both technologies have been shown in some fields, the continuation of well-designed clinical trials may be necessary.

AbstractA 45-year-old man with dyspnoea and palpitations exhibited a unique systemic-to-pulmonary veno-venous connection on preoperative CT images. A window of 31.5-mm diameter was evident between the superior caval vein and the middle pulmonary vein, which was normally connected to the left atrium via a 30-mm-diameter orifice. The atrial septum was intact.
