Environmental researchers, as well as epidemiologists, often encounter the problem of determining the probability of exceeding a high threshold of a variable of interest based on observations that are much smaller than the threshold. Moreover, the data available for that task may only be of moderate size. This generic problem is addressed by repeatedly fusing the real data numerous times with synthetic computer-generated samples. The threshold probability of interest is approximated by certain subsequences created by an iterative algorithm that gives precise estimates. The method is illustrated using environmental data including monitoring data of nitrogen dioxide levels in the air.

ABSTRACT The Korean Peninsula is located in a stable intraplate region with low-seismicity rates and long recurrence intervals of major earthquakes. Recent moderate-size earthquakes demonstrate possible occurrence of seismic damages in the Korean Peninsula. A probabilistic seismic hazard analysis based on instrumental and historical seismicity is applied for the Korean Peninsula. Three seismotectonic province models are used for area sources. Seven ground-motion prediction equations calibrated for bedrock condition are considered. Fault source models are not applied due to poor identification of active faults. A 500 yr long historical record of earthquakes includes moderate and large earthquakes of long recurrence intervals. The influences of model parameters are reflected through a logic-tree scheme. The process and results are verified by Monte Carlo ground-motion level simulation and benchmark tests. Relatively high-seismic hazards are modeled in the northwestern, south-central, and southeastern Korean Peninsula. The horizontal peak ground accelerations reach ∼0.06, 0.09, 0.13, 0.21, and 0.28g for periods of 25, 50, 100, 250, and 500 yr, respectively, with exceedance probability of 10%. Successive moderate-size earthquakes since the 11 March 2011 Tohoku–Oki megathrust earthquake have temporarily increased the seismic hazards in the southeastern peninsula.

Abstract. We resolve a previously unrecognized shallow subducting seamount from a re-processed multichannel seismic depth image crossing the 1994 M7.8 Java tsunami earthquake slip area. Seamount subduction is related to the uplift of the overriding plate by lateral shortening and vertical thickening, causing pronounced back-thrusting at the landward slope of the forearc high and the formation of splay faults branching off the landward flank of the subducting seamount. The location of the seamount in relation to the 1994 earthquake hypocentre and its co-seismic slip model suggests that the seamount acted as a seismic barrier to the up-dip co-seismic rupture propagation of this moderate size earthquake. The wrapping of the co-seismic slip contours around the seamount indicates that it diverted rupture propagation, documenting the control of forearc structures on seismic rupture.

We investigated the accuracy of gender stereotypes regarding digital game genre preferences. In Study 1, 484 female and male participants rated their preference for 17 game genres (gender differences). In Study 2, another sample of 226 participants rated the extent to which the same genres were presumably preferred by women or men (gender stereotypes). We then compared the results of both studies in order to determine the accuracy of the gender stereotypes. Study 1 revealed actual gender differences for most genres—mostly of moderate size. Study 2 revealed substantial gender stereotypes about genre preferences. When comparing the results from both studies, we found that gender stereotypes were accurate in direction for most genres. However, they were, to some degree, inaccurate in size: For most genres, gender stereotypes overestimated the actual gender difference with a moderate mean effect size.

The treatments of vascular malformations pose extreme challenge not only to the surgeons but to the patients as well. A surgical intervention might be effective for all well circumscribed malformations of moderate size with possibility of attaining anatomic and functional restoration but the surgical approach may lead to tissue damage and massive bleeding. Alternatively, Sclerotherapy gives a good choice for the treatment of vascular malformation. In addition, sclerotherapy is also used to reduce the size of lesion, preoperatively as a support to surgery and even some times post-surgically.

<p>Small-to-moderate size earthquakes occur much more frequently than large ones but are general less studied by InSAR, despite that they also provide critical information about the physics of faulting and earthquake mechanisms. The weak coseismic deformations contaminated by severe atmosphere turbulences make them difficult to be studied by single interferogram. Since the launchings on April, 2014 and April, 2016, Sentinel-1 A/B satellites began to provide large-coverage SAR images in short revisited period (6 or 12 days) with 250 km frame width. The high-temporal sampling rate of Sentinel-1 data produce sufficient images for the stacking process to greatly reduce the local atmospheric turbulence that is difficult to be handled by numerical weather models. This procedure allows the extraction of very weak coseismic deformation (i.e. sub-centimeter) for small-to-moderate size earthquakes and systematical static slip inversions of the earthquakes in a tectonically active region by InSAR.</p><p> </p><p>Here we report this stacking method and a new downsampling strategy based on quadtree mesh obtained from preliminary slip model to efficiently reduce the number of unwanted data points. Applying the proposed methods, we successfully retrieve coseismic deformations for 33 earthquakes (Mw4.1-Mw6.6) occurred in west China from Nov, 2014 to Jul 2020. Among these earthquakes, the smallest peak Line-of-Sight coseismic deformation is only ~6 mm. These InSAR-based earthquake catalogs show robust and precise absolute location (latitude, longitude and depth), therefore can be used as benchmark events to calibrate seismic based catalogues. However, strong trade-offs between earthquake source parameters (e.g. fault size vs slip) exist when the earthquake magnitude is small (in general smaller than Mw5.5). Such trade-offs are rooted due to the smaller deformation gradient in comparison with larger earthquakes. For the moderate size earthquakes (Mw6.0-6.6), the comparison between equivalent moment tensor from InSAR slip models and GCMT/W-phase solutions show that large CLVD components, as shown in the seismic-based moment tensor solutions, are mostly not necessary to explain the InSAR data. We suggest to combine geodetic and seismic datasets for more comprehensive and accurate earthquake source parameter inversions.</p>
