Recent Broadway theatre seasons consistently saw record-breaking numbers of admissions and grosses, with musicals’ ticket sales making up 78–89% of annual Broadway grosses. The annual Tony Awards continue to serve as an influential theatre industry establishment that helps define a Broadway musical as exceptional and worthy of audiences, especially the awarding of the ‘Best Musical’ category (which can statistically have a profound impact on a production’s longevity). This article offers comprehensive surveying and discussions of significant components of a musical’s initial Broadway success in the 21st century. All 82 musicals that were nominated for or won the ‘Best Musical’ Tony Award between the years 2000 and 2019 are assessed for their source material and original Broadway run length. Subsequent discussions center on diversity and genres of musicals recognized by the Tony Awards, followed by conclusions and predictions of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on Broadway’s future and the influence of the ‘Best Musical’ Tony Award. The results of this study display observable patterns among the musicals surveyed, including screen (film/tv) being the most prominent source material and at least a 10–12 month run after the Tony Awards ceremonies for all ‘Best Musical’ winners.

No other element impacted the historical conditions of the preceding 100 years to such an extent as the war to secure and control the world's reserves of petroleum. Central Asia remained the object of rivalries and machination by the giant countries of the Europe. World Domination Games started from Pillage Games that lead towards many “Games” such as Great Game, New Great Game, Game Changer and New Game Changer. All prefect countries desire to have a control over the world for the last two centuries. Their efforts turn into numerous clashes and clashes led towards wars. In the twentieth century wars transformed not only their names but also their genetics that has profound impact on the 21st Century. This laid foundation of the emerging new superpowers in every century.

21st century audiences are finding new methods of engaging with the Broadway musical, and fandoms are beginning to establish a visible online presence. In turn, this is creating a shift in paratexts surrounding the musical. Using social media to cultivate relationships, communities and fandoms, Generation Z are responding to the musical in new and innovative ways. Fan-created paratexts are becoming more popular, as fans become more intent on establishing connections to the production. Younger audiences’ tendency to engage with these interactions has allowed them to become the most active audiences on social media, both critically engaged and creative. The access to online interactive platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr bring new opportunities for paratextual creations. Examples of this “next stage of engagement” can be seen through the production Dear Evan Hansen (2015), which is now pushing the limits of social media and successfully utilising Dolan’s utopian performatives to draw in audiences and engage its fandom, or, as they call themselves, the Dear Evan “Fansens”. The fandom is using these paratexts in establishing one-to-one connections with its fans, allowing the fan-created material to “speak back” to the performance moment itself, and it is this which validates a transactional relationship between fan and production. This work ultimately sets out the fandom’s desire to “be found”.

(1) Background: This article seeks to shed a light on the innovation, digitalisation, and teleworking processes that have occurred because of the coronavirus crisis. (2) Methods: To this end, we analyse data from Eurostat (2020), the European Companies Survey (2013; 2019) and the Living, Working and COVID-19 Dataset (2020), the latter two gathered by Eurofound. (3) Results: Our main findings reveal that COVID-19 has accelerated a process of digitalisation that has produced relevant changes in labour relations and, consequently, in companies’ organisation. (4) Conclusions: In short, home confinement has had a profound impact on work and occupational risks.

Marcel Prawy, born in Vienna, graduated in law. In 1936, the couple Kiepura/Eggerth engaged him as private assistant. Two years later Jan Kiepura helped him to emigrate to New York. In 1943, after his employment ended, Prawy joined the US Army. Finally he returned as an elite soldier to Vienna and began his pioneering work for ‘Broadway Musicals’. In 1955, he was appointed dramaturge at the ‘Wiener Volksoper’. One year later in February, Kiss Me, Kate was performed in two Austrian theatres. The Viennese version was produced by Prawy himself and staged by Heinz Rosen. In Graz André Diehl directed the orchestration by conductor Rudolf Bibl on the basis of a piano score. Prawy relied on a mixture of Austrian theatre luminaries and American actors. In the Volksoper 183 performances took place – Graz had only 16. The reviews for the Viennese premiere reaffirmed the cheers. The criticism of the Graz production did not receive the same attention as Prawy’s production did.

This chapter explores the ways in which the British model of subsidizing arts-related activities has encouraged theatres to programme ambitiously and afforded directors the freedom to adopt a fresh, innovative, and often daring approach to their work for the stage. Whilst staging a revival of a Broadway musical classic may seem far from daring, the case studies in this chapter elucidate the ways in which subsidy has allowed directors to address this material in a radical fashion. Exploring two very different theatrical venues reveals methods of programming: whilst the National Theatre chooses to present well-loved golden age Broadway musicals, the Donmar Warehouse focuses on intimate chamber musicals, rarely staged or revived in Britain. This chapter analyses how these musicals have been cast, staged, and received and, in doing so, highlights the manner in which directors have reimagined the Broadway musical for British audiences.

In the process of adaptation, there are major changes in the process and the final project. Changes in creative adaptation is natural. The novel adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen was published in 2017 based on the acclaimed 2015 musical with the same title. Novels often adapted into films and musicals, but an adaptation from a Broadway musical into a novel is extremely rare. Author Val Emmich worked with the creators of the musical to ensure a successful passing of essence from play to novel, ensuring the foundation of the creation of the musical which is the matter of anxiety disorders among teenagers to remain visible throughout the novel.  Many scholars consider creative adaptation as less than the source material meaning that a creative adaptation translates into inferior product. This research scrutinized the process of creative adjustment in the novel through three distinct but interrelated perspectives based on the theory of adaptation by Linda Hutcheon: adaptation as a formal entity or product, adaptation as a process of creation, and adaptation as a process of reception. This research concludes that the novel adaptation transforms, deepens, and compliments the musical and its existence is justified as it contains intertextual significance.

AbstractSince the latter half of the 20th century, studies of linguistic signs have exhibited a steady tendency to shift inwards from “form” to “cognition”, the unfolding of which is driven by linguistic globalization and cultural globalization. The present article attempts to account for this shift and to further explore the implications of contemporary linguistic sign studies for the internal mechanism of the human brain and neurons and the intelligent mechanism of the text and culture. If it can be said that the 20th century was the era of formal linguistics, then it is rightful to say that the 21st century will be the era of cognitive linguistics. “Shifting toward cognition” will have a profound impact upon the development of various disciplines in the 21st century and all humanity.
