The effects of neighborhood-scale land use and land cover (LULC) properties on observed air temperatures are investigated in two regions within Los Angeles County: Central Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley (SFV). LULC properties of particular interest in this study are albedo and tree fraction. High spatial density meteorological observations are obtained from 76 personal weather-stations. Observed air temperatures were then related to the spatial mean of each LULC parameter within a 500 m radius “neighborhood” of each weather station, using robust regression for each hour of July 2015. For the neighborhoods under investigation, increases in roof albedo are associated with decreases in air temperature, with the strongest sensitivities occurring in the afternoon. Air temperatures at 14:00–15:00 local daylight time are reduced by 0.31 °C and 0.49 °C per 1 MW increase in daily average solar power reflected from roofs per neighborhood in SFV and Central Los Angeles, respectively. Per 0.10 increase in neighborhood average albedo, daily average air temperatures were reduced by 0.25 °C and 1.84 °C. While roof albedo effects on air temperature seem to exceed tree fraction effects during the day in these two regions, increases in tree fraction are associated with reduced air temperatures at night.

This paper introduces the concept of chance discovery, i.e. discovery of an event significant for decision making. Then, this paper also presents a current research project on data crystallization, which is an extension of chance discovery. The need for data crystallization is that only the observable part of the real world can be stored in data. For such scattered, i.e. incomplete and ill-structured data, data crystallizing aims at presenting the hidden structure among events including unobservable ones. This is realized with a tool which inserts dummy items, corresponding to unobservable but significant events, to the given data on past events. The existence of these unobservable events and their relations with other events are visualized with KeyGraph, showing events by nodes and their relations by links, on the data with inserted dummy items. This visualization is iterated with gradually increasing the number of links in the graph. This process is similar to the crystallization of snow with gradual decrease in the air temperature. For tuning the granularity level of structure to be visualized, this tool is integrated with human's process of chance discovery. This basic method is expected to be applicable for various real world domains where chance-discovery methods have been applied.

This paper reports on results obtained by deploying HEALER and DOSIM (two AI agents for social influence maximization) in the real-world, which assist service providers in maximizing HIV awareness in real-world homeless-youth social networks. These agents recommend key "seed" nodes in social networks, i.e., homeless youth who would maximize HIV awareness in their real-world social network. While prior research on these agents published promising simulation results from the lab, the usability of these AI agents in the real-world was unknown. This paper presents results from three real-world pilot studies involving 173 homeless youth across two different homeless shelters in Los Angeles. The results from these pilot studies illustrate that HEALER and DOSIM outperform the current modus operandi of service providers by ~160% in terms of information spread about HIV among homeless youth.

This article presents some streamlined and intentionally oversimplified ideas about educating future communication disorders professionals to use some of the most basic principles of evidence-based practice. Working from a popular five-step approach, modifications are suggested that may make the ideas more accessible, and therefore more useful, for university faculty, other supervisors, and future professionals in speech-language pathology, audiology, and related fields.
