The controversial role of ethics in clinical education and its ability to draw the attention of a large audience is inevitable. The issues and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have transformed the clinical education environment. This study was conducted to explore the challenges and ethical requirements of medical sciences education during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The study was qualitative research and the instrument was a semi-structured interview. The participants included faculty members of the basic and clinical Sciences at Iran University of Medical Sciences. After 16 rounds of interviews, theoretical saturation was achieved. Qualitative data were analysed using conventional content analysis, which resulted in 81 preliminary codes and 28 sub-categories. Finally, two themes of "ethical challenges" and "ethical requirements", and 10 categories were achieved. The sub-categories were consisted of "being patient-centred", "social accountability of curriculums", "ethical challenges of the clinical environment", "the poor performance of the clinical faculty members and students", "being justice-centred", "raising awareness", "observing clinical research ethics", "preservation and promotion of mental health", "patient confidentiality", and "respect for individuals". We hope the ethical challenges in medical education that were created due to the emergence of Covid-19 can be reduced and eliminated by defining a framework for ethical requirements.

Introduction: In this study we aimed to perform the first research on the current state of compulsory basic and clinical courses in genetics for medical students offered at medical faculties in six Balkan countries with Slavic languages (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia).Materials and Methods: The study was conducted from June to September 2021. One representative from each country was invited to collect and interpret the data for all medical faculties in their respective country. All representatives filled a questionnaire, which consisted of two sets of questions. The first set of questions was factual and contained specific questions about medical faculties and design of compulsory courses, whereas the second set of questions was more subjective and inquired the opinion of the representatives about mandatory education in clinical medical genetics in their countries and internationally. In addition, full course syllabi were analysed for course aims, learning outcomes, course content, methods for student evaluation and literature.Results: Detailed analysis was performed for a total of 22 medical faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina (6), Croatia (4), Montenegro (1), North Macedonia (3), Serbia (6), and Slovenia (2). All but the two medical faculties in Slovenia offer either compulsory courses in basic education in human genetics (16 faculties/courses) or clinical education in medical genetics (3 faculties/courses). On the other hand, only the medical faculty in Montenegro offers both types of education, including one course in basic education in human genetics and one in clinical education in medical genetics. Most of the basic courses in human genetics have similar aims, learning outcomes and content. Conversely, clinical courses in medical genetics are similar concerning study year position, number of contact hours, ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) and contents, but vary considerably regarding aims, learning outcomes, ratio of types of classes, teaching methods and student evaluation.Conclusion: Our results emphasise the need for future collaboration in reaching a consensus on medical genetics education in Balkan countries with Slavic languages. Further research warrants the analysis of performance of basic courses, as well as introducing clinical courses in medical genetics to higher years of study across Balkan countries.

Nursing’s body of knowledge is ever expanding, incorporating new theoretical constructs such as quality and safety and care transitions we now consider central to the domain of nursing, and to nursing clinical education. The purpose of this article is to describe an educational quality improvement project, an alternative clinical learning experience during COVID-19 that enabled the implementation and evaluation of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students in an intentional quality rounding process. We designed and implemented a retrospective, observational quality improvement educational project. Programmatic evaluation was used to obtain feedback from 273 pre-licensure students using a 10-item Likert scale evaluation tool in June 2020. Students averaged a 4.33 rating on the evaluation of the intentional quality rounding clinical experience as something they should incorporate into future nursing practice. A critical role for nursing education is the development of innovative teaching strategies and learning experiences that facilitate the student in the translation and application of complex constructs from nursing’s expanding body of knowledge, a task made more difficult by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract Background Transition from a clinical expert nurse to a  part time clinical nursing instructor (PTCNI) poses several challenges. Designing a professional development curriculum to facilitate the transition from a clinical expert nurse to a  PTCNI is critical to effective education. A comprehensive competency-based curriculum was developed and implemented with structured mentoring to prepare clinical expert nurses as PTCNIs. Methods A mixed-methods study with a sequential-exploratory approach was conducted in Iran in 2019. In the qualitative phase, Saylor et al.’s (1981) seven-step model was used, consisting of (1) collecting evidence from a systematic review, (2) conducting interviews with learners, (3) setting goals and objectives, (4) design, (5) implementation, (6) evaluation, and (7) feedback. In the quantitative phase, curriculum domains were evaluated. Additionally, the effective professional communication skills module was implemented using a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test post-test single-group design for 5 PTCNIs in a pilot study. Results After integrating the findings of the literature review and field interviews in the analysis stage, a curriculum was developed with a total of 150 h, six modules, and 24 topics. Results of the pilot study showed a significant improvement in the confidence of PTCNIs as a result of the implementation of the effective communication skills module using the mentoring method (t = − 16.554, p = 0.0005). Conclusions This competency-based curriculum was based on the evidence and needs of PTCNIs and provides a complete coverage of their clinical education competencies. It is suggested that managers of educational institutes that offer nursing programs use this curriculum to prepare them in continuing education programs. Further studies are needed to thoroughly evaluate the learning outcomes for students.

Introduction: Simulation-based learning (SBL) is a practical and efficient learning method that involves the replacement of a portion of clinical education with quality simulation experiences. It has been utilised in various countries, such as the United States, Canada, and South Korea. However, based on current regulations in Japan, clinical education cannot be replaced with simulation experience. For future curriculum integration, it is necessary to clarify the current use of SBL and tackle systematic educational strategies of SBL. Therefore, this national survey aimed to clarify the prevalence and practices of SBL in undergraduate nursing education programs in Japan. Methods: This article presents the results of our national survey in Japan. It presents the questionnaire based on the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning Standards of Best Practice and demonstrates the use of simulation-based learning in Japanese undergraduate nursing programs. Results: Overall, the schools using simulation-based education (SBE) comprised 346 schools (82.4%) of the sample. Those equipped with high-fidelity simulators were 146 schools (27.6%); the rest owned medium-fidelity simulators. Almost all undergraduate nursing education systems were equipped with simulators, however, the frequency of use was low. SBL was incorporated into the curriculum at many undergraduate nursing education institutions, and awareness of the INACSL Standard of Best Practice: SimulationSM was extremely low. Conclusion: This study shows that SBL is not properly utilised in undergraduate nursing programs, even though many schools are equipped with simulators. Thus, further study on barriers to simulator use is needed.

Clinical education is the center of professional preparation in healthcare fields, linking theoretical knowledge with clinical practice in the minds and behaviors of student clinicians. Clinical education, supervised by educators who are licensed professionals, is essential in the process of creating new professionals. What does a professional training program do about clinical education when the world shuts down? This chapter addresses the context of a private, not for profit university's response to the COVID-19 public healthcare crisis in spring of 2019 and the process by which a graduate training program in speech-language pathology re-organized, and re-visioned, clinical education in that context. The process allowed an upper cohort of students to graduate successfully and on time, engaged a lower cohort of brand-new clinicians in meaningful clinical learning, and taught the program new lessons about what is important in designing clinical education.
