The use of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) increases the opportunities for detecting surface changes in remote areas and in challenging terrain. Detecting surface topographic changes offers an important constraint for understanding earthquake damage, groundwater depletion, effects of mining, and other events. For these purposes, changes on the order of 5–10 cm are readily detected, but sometimes it is necessary to detect smaller changes. An example is the surface changes that result from underground explosions, which can be as small as 3 cm. Previous studies that described change detection methodologies were generally not aimed at detecting sub-5-cm changes. Additionally, studies focused on high-fidelity accuracy were either computationally modeled or did not fully provide the necessary examples to highlight the usability of these workflows. Detecting changes at this threshold may be critical in certain applications, such as global security research and monitoring for high-consequence natural hazards, including landslides. Here we provide a detailed description of the methodology we used to detect 2–3 cm changes in an important applied research setting—surface changes related to underground explosions. This methodology improves the accuracy of change detection data collection and analysis through the optimization of pre-field planning, surveying, flight operations, and post-processing the collected data, all of which are critical to obtaining the highest output data resolution possible. We applied this methodology to a field study location, collecting 1.4 Tb of images over the course of 30 flights, and location data for 239 ground control points (GCPs). We independently verified changes with orthoimagery, and found that structure-from-motion, software-reported root mean square errors (RMSEs) for both control and check points underestimated the actual error. We found that 3 cm changes are detectable with this methodology, thereby improving our knowledge of a rock’s response to underground explosions.

Abstract Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) serve as an excellent remote-sensing platform to fulfill an aerial imagery data collection niche previously unattainable in forestry by satellites and manned aircraft. However, for UAS-derived data to be spatially representative, a precise network of ground control points (GCP) is often required, which can be tedious and limit the logistical benefits of UAS rapid deployment capabilities, especially in densely forested areas. Therefore, methods for efficient data collection without GCPs are highly desired in UAS remote sensing. Here, we demonstrate the use of postprocessing kinematic (PPK) technology to obtain subcentimeter precision in datasets of forested areas without the need for placing GCPs. We evaluated two key measures, positional variability and time efficiency, of the PPK technology by comparing them to traditional GCP methods. Results show that PPK displays consistently higher positional precision than traditional GCP approaches. Moreover, PPK surveys and processing take less time to complete than traditional GCP methods and require fewer logistical steps, especially in image acquisition. The time and resource savings with PPK as compared to GCP processing are undeniable. We conclude that PPK technology provides a practical means to produce precise aerial forest surveys. Study Implications Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) have enormous potential for lowering costs and streamlining practices in the forestry management and research community. Despite this potential, however, UAS forestry applications have been limited in scope and precision because of a reliance on using ground-based GPS technology to survey ground control points (GCP), which are time intensive and require an open view of the sky. Such a need for a ground-based GCP survey, along with forest canopy serving to limit and scatter incoming GPS signals, diminishes the potential for rapid deployment and precision mapping offered by UAS. Fortunately, Postprocessing-Kinematic (PPK) GPS technology lowers these barriers by providing the means to seamlessly gather highly precise UAS imagery without needing to conduct time-intensive ground-based surveys. This study compares the precision and time-effectiveness between traditional GCP marker surveys and PPK correction methods.

The rapid increase of low-cost consumer-grade to enterprise-level unmanned aerial systems (UASs) has resulted in the exponential use of these systems in many applications. Structure from motion with multiview stereo (SfM-MVS) photogrammetry is now the baseline for the development of orthoimages and 3D surfaces (e.g., digital elevation models). The horizontal and vertical positional accuracies (x, y and z) of these products in general, rely heavily on the use of ground control points (GCPs). However, for many applications, the use of GCPs is not possible. Here we tested 14 UASs to assess the positional and within-model accuracy of SfM-MVS reconstructions of low-relief landscapes without GCPs ranging from consumer to enterprise-grade vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) platforms. We found that high positional accuracy is not necessarily related to the platform cost or grade, rather the most important aspect is the use of post-processing kinetic (PPK) or real-time kinetic (RTK) solutions for geotagging the photographs. SfM-MVS products generated from UAS with onboard geotagging, regardless of grade, results in greater positional accuracies and lower within-model errors. We conclude that where repeatability and adherence to a high level of accuracy are needed, only RTK and PPK systems should be used without GCPs.

The availability of realistic network data plays a significant role in fostering collaboration and ensuring U.S. technical leadership in network security research. Unfortunately, a host of technical, legal, policy, and privacy issues limit the ability of operators to produce datasets for information security testing. In an effort to help overcome these limitations, several data collection efforts (e.g., CRAWDAD[14], PREDICT [34]) have been established in the past few years. The key principle used in all of these efforts to assure low-risk, high-value data is that of trace anonymization—the process of sanitizing data before release so that potentially sensitive information cannot be extracted.

Mapping with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) typically involves the deployment of ground control points (GCPs) to georeference the images and topographic model. An alternative approach is direct geo ref er encing, whereby the onboard Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and inertial measurement unit are used without GCPs to locate and orient the data. This study compares the spatial accuracy of these approaches using two nearly identical UAVs. The onboard GNSS is the one difference between them, as one vehicle uses a survey-grade GNSS/RTK receiver (RTK UAV), while the other uses a lower-grade GPS receiver (non-RTK UAV). Field testing was performed at a gravel pit, with all ground measurements and aerial sur vey ing completed on the same day. Three sets of orthoimages and DSMs were produced for comparing spa tial accuracies: two sets were created by direct georeferencing images from the RTK UAV and non-RTK UAV and one set was created by using GCPs during the external orientation of the non-RTK UAV images. Spatial accuracy was determined from the horizontal (X,Y) and vertical (Z) residuals and root-mean-square-errors (RMSE) relative to 17 horizontal and 180 vertical check points measured with a GNSS/RTK base station and rover. For the two direct georeferencing datasets, the horizontal and vertical accuracy improved substantially with the survey-grade GNSS/RTK receiver onboard the RTK UAV, effectively reducing the RMSE values in X, Y and Z by 1 to 2 orders of magnitude compared to the lower grade GPS receiver onboard the non-RTK UAV. Importantly, the horizontal accuracy of the RTK UAV data processed via direct georeferencing was equivalent to the horizontal accuracy of the non-RTK UAV data processed with GCPs, but the vertical error of the DSM from the RTK UAV data was 2 to 3 times greater than the DSM from the non-RTK data with GCPs. Overall, results suggest that direct georeferencing with the RTK UAV can achieve horizontal accuracy comparable to that obtained with a network of GCPs, but for topographic meas urements requiring the highest achievable accuracy, researchers and practitioners should use GCPs.

Small unmanned aerial systems (UASs) equipped with an optical camera are a cost-effective strategy for topographic surveys. These low-cost UASs can provide useful information for three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction even if they are equipped with a low-quality navigation system. To ensure the production of high-quality topographic models, careful consideration of the flight mode and proper distribution of ground control points are required. To this end, a commercial UAS was adopted to monitor a small earthen dam using different combinations of flight configurations and by adopting a variable number of ground control points (GCPs). The results highlight that optimization of both the choice and combination of flight plans can reduce the relative error of the 3D model to within two meters without the need to include GCPs. However, the use of GCPs greatly improved the quality of the topographic survey, reducing error to the order of a few centimeters. The combined use of images extracted from two flights, one with a camera mounted at nadir and the second with a 20° angle, was found to be beneficial for increasing the overall accuracy of the 3D model and especially the vertical precision.

Versatile unmanned aerial system (UAS) platforms have grown significantly in popularity by virtue of their low cost relative to manned aircraft, high performance, and operational simplicity. While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently regulates the operating altitudes, speeds, weights, pilot qualifications, and locations of drones, a lack of capacity and technology prohibits sufficient enforcement of these restrictions. To assess the frequency and severity of manned and unmanned aircraft separation incidents, and to examine the emerging sensor technology available to facilitate such assessment, flight operations in controlled airspace around Orlando Melbourne International Airport (KMLB) were monitored. One sensor system deployed at KMLB reported UAS locations, altitudes, and flight durations, while a second system reported manned aircraft positions, altitudes, and timestamps using ADS-B signals. Evaluation of flight operations data in the vicinity of KMLB revealed eight potential drone incursions over a 2-week period. Aircraft flight paths were retroactively tracked to map these unmanned and manned aerial conflicts; aircraft identification information was also researched to contextualize the incidents. The frequency and magnitude of identified events suggest the need for additional research to further explore the problem scope and potential solutions.

Abstract. Images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and processed by structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry are increasingly used in geomorphology to obtain high-resolution topography data. Conventional georeferencing using ground control points (GCPs) provides reliable positioning, but the geometrical accuracy critically depends on the number and spatial layout of the GCPs. This limits the time and cost effectiveness. Direct georeferencing of the UAV images with differential GNSS, such as PPK (post-processing kinematic), may overcome these limitations by providing accurate and directly georeferenced surveys. To investigate the positional accuracy, repeatability and reproducibility of digital surface models (DSMs) generated by a UAV–PPK–SfM workflow, we carried out multiple flight missions with two different camera–UAV systems: a small-form low-cost micro-UAV equipped with a high field of view (FOV) action camera and a professional UAV equipped with a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera. Our analysis showed that the PPK solution provides the same accuracy (MAE: ca. 0.02 m, RMSE: ca. 0.03 m) as the GCP method for both UAV systems. Our study demonstrated that a UAV–PPK–SfM workflow can provide consistent, repeatable 4-D data with an accuracy of a few centimeters. However, a few flights showed vertical bias and this could be corrected using one single GCP. We further evaluated different methods to estimate DSM uncertainty and show that this has a large impact on centimeter-level topographical change detection. The DSM reconstruction and surface change detection based on a DSLR and action camera were reproducible: the main difference lies in the level of detail of the surface representations. The PPK–SfM workflow in the context of 4-D Earth surface monitoring should be considered an efficient tool to monitor geomorphic processes accurately and quickly at a very high spatial and temporal resolution.
