Multi-tube multi-fin heat exchangers are extensively used in various industries. In the current work, detailed experimental investigations were carried out to establish the flow/heat transfer characteristics in three distinct heat exchanger geometries. A novel perforated plain fin design was developed, and its performance was evaluated against standard plain and louvred fins designs. Experimental setups were designed, and the tests were carefully carried out which enabled quantification of the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. In the experiments the average velocity of air was varied in the range of 0.7 m/s to 4 m/s corresponding to Reynolds numbers of 600 to 2650. The water side flow rates in the tubes were kept at 0.12, 0.18, 0.24, 0.3, and 0.36 m3/h corresponding to Reynolds numbers between 6000 and 30,000. It was found that the louvred fins produced the highest heat transfer rate due to the availability of higher surface area, but it also produced the highest pressure drops. Conversely, while the new perforated design produced a slightly higher pressure drop than the plain fin design, it gave a higher value of heat transfer rate than the plain fin especially at the lower liquid flow rates. Specifically, the louvred fin gave consistently high pressure drops, up to 3 to 4 times more than the plain and perforated models at 4 m/s air flow, however, the heat transfer enhancement was only about 11% and 13% over the perforated and plain fin models, respectively. The mean heat transfer rate and pressure drops were used to calculate the Colburn and Fanning friction factors. Two novel semiempirical relationships were derived for the heat exchanger’s Fanning and Colburn factors as functions of the non-dimensional fin surface area and the Reynolds number. It was demonstrated that the Colburn and Fanning factors were predicted by the new correlations to within ±15% of the experiments.

The two important considerations in the design of a heat exchanger are — the total heat transfer rate and the allowable pressure drop. The allowable pressure drop defines the maximum flow rate through a single microchannel and economics drives the design towards this flow rate. Typically the flow rate in the microchannel is in laminar flow regime (Re < 2000) due to smaller hydraulic diameter. The laminar flow heat transfer in a smooth microchannel is limited by the boundary layer thickness. Commonly the heat transfer rate is enhanced by passively disrupting the laminar boundary layer using protrusions or depressions in the channel walls. More often these methods are best applicable at small range of Reynolds number where the heat transfer rate enhancement is more than the pressure drop increase and break down as the flow rate is changed outside the range. The benefit of a flow disruption method can be reaped only if it provides higher heat transfer enhancement than the increase in the pressure drop at the working flow rates in the microchannel. A heat transfer efficient microchannel design has been developed using wall features that create stable disrupted flow and break the laminar boundary layer in a microchannel over a wide range of flow rates. The paper experimentally investigates the developed design for the heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop increase compared to a smooth wall microchannel. A simple microchannel device was designed and fabricated with and without wall features. The experiments with single gas phase fluid showed promising results with the developed wall feature design as the heat transfer rate increase was 20% to 80% more than the pressure drop increase in the laminar regime. The wall feature design was an important variable to affect the magnitude of performance enhancement in different flow regime. A general criterion was developed to judge the efficacy of wall feature design that can be used during a microchannel heat exchanger design.

Heat transfer rate and pressure drop of turbulent flows of water in a smooth-wall tube and five corrugated tubes at Reynolds numbers between 7,500 and 50,000 are studied using the commercial software FLUENT. The corrugated tube is constructed by placing protruded ridges evenly along a tube. Depending on the different design of corrugated tubes, our numerical simulation results show that the use of corrugated tubes can improve heat transfer rate by a factor of 1.5 to 2 at Reynolds numbers between 7,500 and 12,000 when compared to a smooth-wall tube. However, the rate of enhancement gradually decreases to a factor of 1.1 to 1.5 as flow Reynolds number increases to 50,000. We further studied the pressure drop and friction factors of the corrugated tube. For the corrugated tube with the highest heat transfer enhancement, we found the pressure drop increases by a factor of 3 to 4 compared to a smooth-wall tube, while the friction factor increases by a factor of 3.5 to 4.4. These findings can be very useful in the design of more efficient heat exchangers.

This paper presents the effect of the changes in fin geometry on pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of louvered fin heat exchanger numerically. Three dimensional simulation using ANSYS Fluent have been conducted for six different configurations at Reynolds number ranging from 200 to 1000 based on louver pitch. The performance of this system has been evaluated by calculating pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient. The result shows that, the fin pitch and the louver pitch have a very considerable effect on pressure drop as well as heat transfer rate. It is observed that increasing the fin pitch will relatively result in an increase in heat transfer rate but at the same time, the pressure drop will decrease. On the other hand, low pressure drop and low heat transfer rate will be obtained when the louver pitch is increased. Final result shows a good agreement between experimental and numerical results of the louvered fin which is about 12%. This indicates the capability of louvered fin in enhancing the performance of heat exchangers.

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) enables improved heat exchanger (HX) designs where performance is based on the achievable geometry. However, consequences of the AM process that affect HX performance such as increased surface roughness, dimensional tolerance issues, and defects like cracks may vary among identically designed AM parts due to AM machine settings. This paper experimentally compares the thermal and hydraulic performance of three AM HXs built using a traditionally manufactured, stamped aluminum oil cooler design. The AM HXs exhibited significantly higher air-side pressure drop and higher heat transfer rate than the traditional HX in large part due to increased AM surface roughness. Among AM HXs, one AM HX had notably higher heat transfer rate and air-side pressure drop due to poor print quality on the thin air-side fin features. The fin thickness among AM HXs also varied by about 15%, and there were only slight differences in surface roughness. This study indicates that functional HXs built using AM vary in performance even when the same digital model is used to print them and that AM HXs as a group can perform considerably differently than their traditional counterparts.

The quest to achieve higher heat transfer rate, smaller size and minimum pressure drop is a main area of focus in the design of heat exchangers. Plate heat exchangers are one of viable candidates to deliver higher heat duties but still have a drawback of higher pressure drop due to long restricted flow path. Motivated by demand of miniaturization and cost reduction, a novel design of tubular microchannel heat exchanger for single phase flow employing ammonia water mixture is proposed. Numerical simulation of unit fluid domain is conducted in ANSYS Fluent. Parametric study of the different flow geometries is evaluated in terms of Nusselt number and pressure drop. The salient features of the design include ultra-compact size with higher heat transfer rate and acceptable pressure drop.

The plate and concentric tube heat exchangers are tested by using the water-water and nanofluid-water streams. The ZnO/Water (0.5%v/v) nanofluid has been used as the hot stream. The heat transfer rate omitted of hot stream and overall heat transfer coefficients in both heat exchangers are measured as a function of hot and cold streams mass flow rates. The experimental results show that the heat transfer rate and heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluid in both of the heat exchangers is higher than that of the base liquid (i.e., water) and the efficiency of plate heat exchange is higher than concentric tube heat exchanger. In the plate heat exchanger the heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid at mcold = mhot = 10 gr/sec is about 20% higher than base fluid and under the same conditions in the concentric heat exchanger is 14% higher than base fluid. The heat transfer rate and heat transfer coefficients increases with increase in mass flow rates of hot and cold streams. Also the CFD1 code is used to simulate the performance of the mentioned heat exchangers. The CFD results are compared to the experimental data and showed good agreement. It is shown that the CFD is a reliable tool for investigation of heat transfer of nanofluids in the various heat exchangers.

The heat transfer enhancement is one of the essential factors to be considered in the design of heat exchangers. The rate of heat transfer can be enhanced by inserting and modifying the geometric configuration of the turbulators in the tube of heat exchangers. In our present work we conducted the experiment to investigate the rate of heat transfer enhancement in a tubular in a heat exchanger by using rotating twisted tape turbulator of twist ratio 3.27 using water and Al2O3 nanofluid as a testing fluid at the flow rate of 1, 2, and 3 LPM. The range of Reynolds number used is 2000<Re<10000, the heat transfer rate calculated for each case of rotating TTT with the speed of 0 to 300 RPM with the step of 100 RPM. The obtained results are compared between water and Al2O3 nanofluid, with and without rotating TTT. From the comparisons, it was found that the TTT with U-cut and the use of Al2O3 nanofluid gives the better rise in the heat transfer rate of about 39.63%. The augmented rate of heat transfer is due to the more turbulence when the rotating TTT is used and replacing the water with nanofluid as the testing fluid which of high thermal properties.

Currently, liquid-to-gas heat exchangers in buildings, domestic appliances and the automotive industry are mainly made of copper and aluminum. Using plastic instead of metal can be very beneficial from an economic and environmental point of view. However, it is required that a successful plastic design meets all the requirements of metal heat exchangers. The polymeric hollow fiber heat exchanger studied in this work is completive to common metal finned heat exchangers. Due to its unique design (the use of thousands of thin-walled microtubes connected in parallel), it achieves a high level of compactness and thermal performance, low pressure drops and high operation pressure. This paper focuses on an important aspect of heat exchanger operation—its fouling in conditions relevant to building and domestic application. In heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and automotive and domestic appliances, outdoor and domestic dust are the main source of fouling. In this study, a heat exchanger made of polymeric hollow fibers was tested in conditions typical for indoor HVAC equipment, namely with the 20 °C room air flowing through the hot water coil (water inlet 50 °C) with air velocity of 1.5 m/s. ASHRAE test dust was used as a foulant to model domestic dust. A polymeric heat exchanger with fibers with an outer diameter of 0.6 mm (1960 fibers arranged into 14 layers in total) and a heat transfer area of 0.89 m2 was tested. It was proven that the smooth polypropylene surface of hollow fibers has a favorable antifouling characteristic. Fouling evolution on the metallic heat transfer surfaces of a similar surface density was about twice as quick as on the plastic one. The experimental results on the plastic heat exchanger showed a 38% decrease in the heat transfer rate and a 91% increase in pressure drops after eighteen days of the experiment when a total of 4000 g/m2 of the test dust had been injected into the air duct. The decrease in the heat transfer rate of the heat exchanger was influenced mainly by clogging in the frontal area because the first layers were fouled significantly more than the deeper layers.

In fin and tube heat exchangers, the gas passing through the fin has a lower thermal conductivity than the fluid passing through the tube. The low thermal conductivity brings a high thermal resistance, which suppresses the heat transfer rate. A common practice to enhance fin-side heat transfer is to generate longitudinal vortex by mounting vortex generators (VGs) on the fin. This paper aims to investigate how longitudinal vortex generator (LVG) improves heat transfer and pressure drop. Numerical simulations were carried out to analyze three types of VGs. The installation of VGs was varied with the attack angle changing from 10°, 15°, to 20° with a 1-3-4-7 VG arrangement on the tube. The flow velocity was expressed in Reynolds number (Re) between 364 and 689. The enhancement of heat transfer rate and improvement of pressure drop were analyzed between three types of VG, three different attack angles, and four types of winglet installation, compared to baseline. The simulation results show that the highest convective heat transfer coefficient (84.85%) was achieved by the VG composed of seven concave delta winglet pairs (CDWPs) at the attack angle of 20° and Re = 689; CDWP VG provides the highest heat transfer improvement among all cases.
