Correlation and cross-spectral analysis of hydrographs was performed on the karst area of the mountainous section of the Kupa River in two time periods. Since there are karst aquifers in this area that is a part of strategic groundwater reserves of potable water, such an analysis could give better insight into the behavior of these aquifers. The functions used to describe karst aquifers are the cross-correlation function, coherence function, gain function, and phase function. The outcomes of the analysis results were very similar in the two analyzed periods, suggesting that differences in input signals between these two periods do not affect the aquifer function as a system filter. The results of this research suggest that the aquifer and overburden layer characteristics have a much stronger influence than the change of input signal on the runoff regime in the considered period.

Among the qualities that distinguish dance from other types of human behavior and interaction are the creation and breaking of synchrony and symmetry. The combination of symmetry and synchrony can provide complex interactions. For example, two dancers might make very different movements, slowing each time the other sped up: a mirror symmetry of velocity. Examining patterns of synchrony and symmetry can provide insight into both the artistic nature of the dance, and the nature of the perceptions and responses of the dancers. However, such complex symmetries are often difficult to quantify. This paper presents three methods – Generalized Local Linear Approximation, Time-lagged Autocorrelation, and Windowed Cross-correlation – for the exploration of symmetry and synchrony in motion-capture data as is it applied to dance and illustrate these with examples from a study of free-form dance. Combined, these techniques provide powerful tools for the examination of the structure of symmetry and synchrony in dance.

We present herein a synthesis of faunistic data from caves in the Serra da Bodoquena karst area, middle Paraguay River basin, Mato Grosso do Sul State. Those include phreatic, submerged and dry caves. Emphasis is given to troglobites (exclusively subterranean species), potentially threatened due to their morphological, physiological and behavioral specializations, associated to generally small distributions. The Bodoquena karst area distinguishes as a spot of high diversity of troglobites, such as trichomycterid and heptapterid catfishes, aquatic planarians and gastropods, arachnids (Eusarcus opilionids, ctenid spiders), Polydesmida diplopods, several collembolans, some insects, and Peracarida crustaceans, which include interesting phylogenetic relicts as spelaeogriphaceans. Four geographic compartments corresponding to microbasins, seemingly with biogeographic importance for the subterranean fauna, are recognized. Phreatobic troglobites (Trichomycterus catfishes, aquatic peracarids, planarians) distribute widely across these compartments and some well beyond (the spelaeogriphacean Potiicoara brasiliensis reaches Mato Grosso state), while those living in base-level streams (Rhamdia and Ancistrus catfishes) and the terrestrial ones, that live in the vadose (aerated zone) are generally restricted to one compartment. Many subterranean ecosystems in Mato Grosso do Sul are endangered by several threats described here and urgent actions for effective protection are required to guarantee a sustainable use of the land and the karst aquifers.

In this paper, three tetrahedral nanocages, composed of six DNA double helix edges with all having the twist number 1, 2 or 3, have been characterized using classical molecular dynamics simulation to measure the specific structural and conformational features produced by only changing the twisting number of each double helix. The simulation result indicates that three tetrahedral cages are relatively stable and are maintained along the entire trajectory. Each double helix is more inclined to behave as a whole in the 2TD and 3TD cages than in the 1TD cage according to the cross-correlation maps for three nanocages, and also their local motions are more easily induced by the conformational variability of the thymidine linkers due to the increased flexibility of each helix. Hence, the double helices become the important factors on the structural stability of total cages with the DNA twisting number, and also give the signification contributions to the sizes of these cages conferring the larger spaces of the 2TD and 3TD cages than the 1TD cage. Our result provides an insight into which roles the double helix edges play in assembling DNA polyhedron, and also contribute to improving the loading capacity of DNA tetrahedron in drug delivery.

In a previous study, we reported evidence for correlations between the firing of postsynaptic dorsal column (PSDC) neurons and cuneate neurons with overlapping receptive fields on the glabrous skin of the raccoon forepaw. The evidence was based on cross-correlation and frequency response analyses of spontaneously firing neurons. However, cross-correlation without white noise Gaussian analog inputs or Poisson distributed pulse train inputs is difficult to interpret because of the inherent convolution with the autocorrelation of the unknown input signals. While the data suggested positive correlations in the spinocuneate direction for most neuron pairs, we could not estimate the temporal characteristics of these putative connections. We have now re-analyzed these data using a parallel-cascade method to estimate the first- and second-order kernels of a Volterra series approximation to the spinocuneate system. This unbiased analysis suggests that a positive correlation occurs after about 5 ms, probably followed by a negative correlation at about 12 ms. Second-order kernels also had repeatable structure, indicating dual pathways with time separations of at least 10 ms.

We have demonstrated the generation of supercontinuum (SC) pulses in bulk, using femtosecond pulses directly derived from a Tm:YAP regenerative amplifier. The SC spans from 380 nm–4 μ m. Such an SC combined with the applied 1937-nm pump pulse can be used in a mid-infrared optical parametric amplifier (MIR-OPA). A full characterization of the phase and stability of the SC provides important insight into the performance of such MIR-OPA systems. Using cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating (XFROG), we characterized the properties of the MIR section of the SC that can be used as a seed pulse in an MIR-OPA system. The pulse-to-pulse instability rooted in the intrinsic properties of the self-phase modulation process was observed in the retrieved trace and spectrum of the SC. In addition, the effect of the pump pulse quality was studied on the obtainable SC pulses.

The equivalent gain concept of a mono-variable non-linear stochastic process is used to evaluate the linear matrix equivalent of a multi-variable non-linearity having n independent inputs and m outputs. It is shown that if the n inputs are restricted to separable class of processes (which includes Gaussian random signals and also sinusoidal wave forms but is much wider), then the distortion terms produced by the non-linearity and by cross modulation have zero cross-correlation with any of the input signals.
