Little is known regarding the association between physical fitness and bone health in older Korean men. This study investigated the relationship between estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (eCRF) and bone mineral density (BMD). This cross-sectional study included 2715 Korean men aged 50 years and older selected from those who participated in the 2008–2011 Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination and Survey. eCRF was obtained using a sex-specific algorithm developed on the basis of age, body mass index, resting heart rate, and physical activity and classified into low, middle, and high categories. Femoral neck BMD was assessed by dual X-ray absorptiometry. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for osteopenia, osteoporosis, and low BMD were calculated for eCRF categories in models fully adjusted for age, waist circumference, education, income, smoking, heavy alcohol intake, serum vitamin D, serum parathyroid hormone, and dietary intake of energy, protein, calcium, and vitamins A and C. Overall, eCRF levels were positively associated with BMD and negatively with prevalence of osteopenia, osteoporosis, and low BMD. Logistic regression showed inverse trends in the risks of osteopenia (high vs. low: OR = 0.692; 95% CI, 0.328–0.517; p = 0.049) and low BMD (high vs. low: OR = 0.669; 95% CI, 0.497–0.966; p = 0.029) by eCRF category in models fully adjusted for all the measured covariates. The current findings suggest that maintaining high eCRF via regular physical activity may contribute to attenuation of age-related loss of BMD and decreased risk for low BMD in older Korean men.

Deficiency of vitamin D is an emerging issue in children worldwide. It has beenobserved that all patients with vitamin D deficiency does not manifest clinical features or hyperparathyroidresponse. In this study we have evaluated the interaction of serum vitamin D level,parathyroid hormone (PTH) level and bone mineral density (BMD) in children. Objectives: Ourobjectives were to determine the frequency of Vitamin D deficiency in children and association oflow serum D level with serum parathyroid level and bone mineral density (BMD). Study Design:Descriptive cross sectional study. Period: June 2012 to May 2014. Setting: Pediatric and Orthopediatricout-patient departments. Material & Methods: A total of 500 children up to 15 yearswith low serum vitamin D level were enrolled to analyze the interaction of Serum vitamin D, PTHand BMD. Patients were divided in groups on the basis of serum PTH. We have categorize thedeficiency of Vitamin D on the basis of level of 25OHD. It was defined as severe (25OHD ≤ 5ng/ml), moderate (25OHD≤ 10 ng/ml) and mild (25OHD ≤ 20 ng/ml) and hyperparathyroidism(SHPT) was valued if level >65 pg/ml. All children with 25OH ≤ 20 ng/ml were included andassociation with SHPT and BMD were measured. Results: It has been observed that 30–40%of patients with moderate and severe deficiency of vitamin D respectively had shown increasedlevel of PTH. Bone mineral density has demonstrated decline pattern from PTH Quartile 1toQuartile 4 at all sites in children, with only minimal difference (decreasing trend) in serum25OHD levels between these quartiles. The critical level of parathyroid hormone beyond whichBMD going to decline is 35 pg/ml. No demonstrable difference has been observed in BMDwithin each PTH quartile according to categorization of Vitamin D Deficiency. Conclusions:Around 40% of the patients having low serum vitamin D level demonstrated SHPT. Regardingthe BMD levels, it begins to decreases at PTH levels currently well thought-out to be normal.So there is a need to re-define SHPT among different age groups considering the relationshiplinking PTH and BMD. This may also affect guidelines regarding vitamin d supplementation inpatients with vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D is essential for maintaining calcium homeostasis and optimizing bone health. Its inadequacy is related to many factors including dietary intake. The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum 25(OH)D and its relationship with nutrient intakes in postmenopausal Brazilian women with osteoporosis. This cross-sectional study comprised 45 free-living and assisted elderly at São Paulo Hospital. Three-day dietary records were used to assess dietary intakes. Bone mineral density was measured with a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer (DXA). Blood and urine sample were collected for analysis of biochemical markers of bone and mineral metabolism. Insufficiency of vitamin D was observed in 24.4% of the women and optimal levels (≥ 50 nmol/L) were observed in 75.6%. Parathyroid hormone was above the reference range in 51% of the participants. The mean calcium (724 mg/day) and vitamin D (4.2 μ g/day) intakes were lower than the value proposed by The Food and Nutrition Board and sodium intake was more than two-fold above the recommendation. Higher levels of serum 25(OH)D were inversely associated with sodium intake. Dietary strategies to improve serum vitamin D must focus on increasing vitamin D intake and should take a reduction of sodium intake into consideration.

ABSTRACT CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Peak height velocity (PHV) is an important maturational event during adolescence that affects skeleton size. The objective here was to compare bone variables in adolescents who practiced different types of sports, and to identify whether differences in bone variables attributed to sports practice were dependent on somatic maturation status. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study, São Paulo State University (UNESP). METHODS: The study was composed of 93 adolescents (12 to 16.5 years old), divided into three groups: no-sport group (n = 42), soccer/basketball group (n = 26) and swimming group (n = 25). Bone mineral density and content were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and somatic maturation was estimated through using peak height velocity. Data on training load were provided by the coaches. RESULTS: Adolescents whose PHV occurred at an older age presented higher bone mineral density in their upper limbs (P = 0.018). After adjustments for confounders, such as somatic maturation, the swimmers presented lower values for bone mineral density in their lower limbs, spine and whole body. Only the bone mineral density in the upper limbs was similar between the groups. There was a negative relationship between whole-body bone mineral content and the weekly training hours (β: -1563.967; 95% confidence interval, CI: -2916.484 to -211.450). CONCLUSION: The differences in bone variables attributed to sport practice occurred independently of maturation, while high training load in situations of hypogravity seemed to be related to lower bone mass in swimmers.
