The aim of the study is to describe personality profiles and determinants of success in sports in relation to the Big Five Personality Model. In order to achieve this aim, personality profiles of players from various sports disciplines was set against the personality profile of champions—players who are considerably successful in sports competitions. Subsequently, an attempt was made to determine which personality traits significantly determine belonging to the group of champions—and therefore determine success in sport. The participants were men aged between 20 and 29 from the Polish population of sportsmen. A total of 1260 athletes were tested, out of whom 118 were qualified to the champions sample—those athletes had significant sports achievements. The research used the NEO-FFI Personality Questionnaire. Basic descriptive statistics, a series of Student’s t-tests for independent samples using the bootstrapping method, as well as a logistic regression model were performed. In relation to other athletes, champions were characterized by a lower level of neuroticism and a higher level of extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. An important personality determinant was neuroticism: the lower the level of neuroticism, the greater the probability of an athlete being classified as a champion. There are differences between champions and other athletes in all personality dimensions in terms of the Big Five. Based on the result of the research, it can be stated that personality differences should be seen as a consequence of athletes’ success, rather than as a reason for athletes’ success, based on their age between 20 and 29.

ObjectivesIn team sports, many anecdotes and stereotypes report personality differences between athletes of different playing positions. However, by now research shows ambiguous results and often only single sports have been examined. This preregistered study, thus, represents a first comprehensive investigation of differences in personality traits of athletes (1) performing different team sports, (2) being offense players and defense players, as well as (3) playing on different positions. DesignIn an online survey, we assessed self-reported Big Five personality traits for 2,322 athletes of 16 different (popular – e.g. Basketball and less-known – e.g. Quidditch) team sports using the BFI-2-S (Soto & John, 2017). Further, we assessed their role in the offense and defense phases of a game, their specific playing position as well as demographic and sport-related information.MethodWe descriptively and statistically investigated differences between personality profiles of different team sports, between offense and defense players within sports, and between playing positions within sports. Additionally, we compared different approaches to assessing offense and defense positions. ResultsAthletes playing different team sports significantly differed in the personality traits Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and Openness. However, these effects were small (η2 ranging from .01 to .02). Similarly, offense players were found to be significantly more extraverted than defense players, but the effect was again small (ηp2 = .003). Athletes playing offense and defense positions did not significantly differ in any other personality traits regardless of how we operationalized offense and defense. However, we demonstrated that not all playing positions may be easily categorized into offense and defense. Finally, athletes of different playing positions did not differ significantly in their personality traits. As the only exception, Floorball centers were significantly more extraverted than Floorball defenders explaining only about 5% of the variance in trait extraversion scores.ConclusionOur comprehensive investigation demonstrates that there is only a little evidence for differences in Big Five traits for athletes of different team sports and between athletes being offense or defense players, or athletes playing on different playing positions. Thus, ascribed personality differences might indeed just be reflecting stereotypes.

Abstract. This study examines the relationship between students' personality and intelligence scores with their preferences for the personality profile of their lecturers. Student ratings (N = 136) of 30 lecturer trait characteristics were coded into an internally reliable Big Five taxonomy ( Costa & McCrae, 1992 ). Descriptive statistics showed that, overall, students tended to prefer conscientious, open, and stable lecturers, though correlations revealed that these preferences were largely a function of students' own personality traits. Thus, open students preferred open lecturers, while agreeable students preferred agreeable lecturers. There was evidence of a similarity effect for both Agreeableness and Openness. In addition, less intelligent students were more likely to prefer agreeable lecturers than their more intelligent counterparts were. A series of regressions showed that individual differences are particularly good predictors of preferences for agreeable lecturers, and modest, albeit significant, predictors of preferences for open and neurotic lecturers. Educational and vocational implications are considered.

- A large number of studies have aimed at outlining the personality profile of sex offenders; however, due to the heterogenousness of such crime and their perpetrators, this task is very difficult. This study attempts to highlight the different types of sex offenders, their personality profiles, their possible defence mechanisms. Methods: Subjects of this study are male prisoners detained in a special section of the district penitentiary in Velletri (Rome, Italy). All subjects (N=8) were convicted of sexual crimes towards children and/or women. Their mean age is 51. Prisoners on remand were not included in this study. The adopted tools are: a Grid for collecting the anamnesis and the information regarding the crime; the Big Five Questionnaire; the Sesamo. Results and conclusions: Results proved the difficulties to outline a personality profile of sex offenders, but pointed out some common psycho-sexual aspects. These aspects were probably related to the prison situation of the subjects. Key words: sex offenders; personality profile; district penitentiary.

This study surveyed a sample of nationally certified executive search recruiters, with the use of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). Chi-square test analyses revealed that this sample differed significantly from adult norms on 4 of the 5 NEO-FFI scales. These scales were Neuroticism, Extraversion. Openness. and Conscientiousness. Implications of these findings for employment counselor practice are discussed.

AbstractTwo studies investigated how the development and maintenance of old and new relationships predict spontaneous and reactive self-concept change. For Study 1 (n = 143), freshmen in their first 8 weeks of college completed a Twenty Statements Test (TST), and indicated how close they felt in their established and new relationships. Eight weeks later, they indicated which aspects on the TST had changed. The results showed that closeness to old relationships at Time 1 predicted fewer deletions to their Time 2 TST, whereas closeness to new relationships at Time 1 predicted more additions to their Time 2 TST. For Study 2 (n = 195), participants completed a Big Five personality measure and closeness measure at two time points. The results showed that decreased closeness in old relationships at Time 2 predicted overall change to personality profiles. Implications for the link between relationships and self-concept change are discussed.

AbstractSome information systems research has considered that individual personality traits influence whether users feel stressed by information and communication technologies. Personality research suggests, however, that personality traits do not act individually, but interact interdependently to constitute a personality profile that guides individual perceptions and behavior. The study relies on the differential exposure-reactivity model to investigate which personality profiles of the Big Five personality traits predispose users to perceive techno-stressors. Using a questionnaire, data was collected from 221 users working in different organizations. That data was analyzed using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. Based on the results, six different personality profiles that predispose to perceive high techno-stressors are identified. By investigating personality traits in terms of profiles, it is shown that a high and a low level of a personality trait can influence the perception of techno-stressors. The results will allow users and practitioners to identify individuals who are at risk of perceiving techno-stressors based on their personality profile. The post-survey analysis offers starting points for the prevention of perceived techno-stressors and the related negative consequences for specific personality profiles.
