This article introduces the Special Issue on “Citizen Science and Geospatial Capacity Building” and briefly evaluates the future trends in this field. This Special Issue was initiated for emphasizing the importance of citizen science (CitSci) and volunteered geographic information (VGI) in various stages of geodata collection, processing, analysis and visualization; and for demonstrating the capabilities and advantages of both approaches. The topic falls well within the main focus areas of ISPRS Commission V on Education and Outreach. The articles collected in the issue have shown the enormously wide application fields of geospatial technologies, and the need of CitSci and VGI support for efficient information extraction and synthesizing. They also pointed out various problems encountered during these processes. The needs and future research directions in this subject can broadly be categorized as; (a) data quality issues especially in the light of big data; (b) ontology studies for geospatial data suited for diverse user backgrounds, data integration, and sharing; (c) development of machine learning and artificial intelligence based online tools for pattern recognition and object identification using existing repositories of CitSci and VGI projects; and (d) open science and open data practices for increasing the efficiency, decreasing the redundancy, and acknowledgement of all stakeholders.

Open Science holds the promise to make scientific endeavours more inclusive, participatory, understandable, accessible, and re-usable for large audiences. However, making processes open will not per se drive wide re-use or participation unless also accompanied by the capacity (in terms of knowledge, skills, financial resources, technological readiness and motivation) to do so. These capacities vary considerably across regions, institutions and demographics. Those advantaged by such factors will remain potentially privileged, putting Open Science’s agenda of inclusivity at risk of propagating conditions of “cumulative advantage”. With this paper, we systematically scope existing research addressing the question: “What evidence and discourse exists in the literature about the ways in which dynamics and structures of inequality could persist or be exacerbated in the transition to Open Science, across disciplines, regions and demographics?” Aiming to synthesise findings, identify gaps in the literature, and inform future research and policy, our results identify threats to equity associated with all aspects of Open Science, including Open Access, Open/FAIR Data, Open Methods, Open Evaluation, Citizen Science, as well as its interfaces with society, industry and policy. Key threats include: stratifications of publishing due to the exclusionary nature of the author-pays model of Open Access; potential widening of the digital divide due to the infrastructure-dependent, highly situated nature of open data practices; risks of diminishing qualitative methodologies as “reproducibility” becomes synonymous with quality; new risks of bias and exclusion in means of transparent evaluation; and crucial asymmetries in the Open Science relationships with industry and the public, which privileges the former and fails to fully include the latter.

Open Science ist ein relativ junger Begriff, die zugrunde liegende Idee des Teilens von Wissen, Ergebnissen und Methoden ist jedoch so alt ist wie die Wissenschaft selbst. Open Science umfasst neben Open Access und Open Data – dem offenen Zugang zu Veröffentlichungen und Forschungsdaten – auch radikal neue Bereiche wie Citizen Science und Open Notebook Science. Seitdem die Europäische Kommission und andere Forschungsförderer zunehmend Open Access zu Publikationen und Daten in ihre Förderrichtlinien aufnehmen, ist es für Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler unumgänglich geworden, sich mit diesem Thema auseinanderzusetzen. Die Herausforderung bei der Umsetzung dieser Anforderungen ist nicht so sehr die Existenz und Zugänglichkeit relevanter Informationen, sondern die unübersichtliche Fülle an Material. Das von der Europäischen Kommission geförderte Projekt „Facilitating Open Science Training for European Research“ (FOSTER) führt deshalb eine breite Sammlung von Materialien und Kursen zum Thema Open Science zusammen und schafft so eine Lernressource für die europäische Forschungscommunity. Die Inhalte stehen möglichst über offene Lizenzen zur Verfügung, um die Nachnutzung in weiteren Schulungen zu unterstützen. Die Navigation durch die Fülle an Inhalten erfolgt entlang einer Taxonomie oder anhand von zielgruppenspezifischen Lernzielen, die zum Beispiel Projektmanager oder Multiplikatoren wie Bibliothekare adressieren. Der Artikel stellt die aktuellen Ergebnisse des Projektes vor, beleuchtet die Rolle der Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen im Projekt und gibt einen Ausblick auf die Aktivitäten im zweiten Projektjahr.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensors, integrating the features of Wireless Information and Power Transfer (WIPT), object identification and energy efficient sensing capabilities, have been considered a new paradigm of sensing and communication for the futuristic information systems. RFID sensor tags featuring contactless sensing, wireless information transfer, wireless powered, light weight, non-line-of-sight transmission, flexible and pasteable are a critical enabling technology for future Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications, such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, agriculture and food. They have attracted numerous research efforts due to their innovative potential in the various application fields. However, there has been a gap between the in-lab investigations and the practical IoT application scenarios, which has motivated this survey of this research to identify the promising enabling techniques and the underlying challenges. This study aims to provide an exhaustive review on the state-of-art RFID sensor technologies from the system implementation perspective by focusing on the fundamental RF energy harvesting theories, the recent technical progresses and commercial solutions, innovative applications and some RFID sensor based IoT solutions, identify the underlying technological challenges at the time being, and give the future research trends and promising application fields in the rich sensing applications of the forthcoming IoT era.

The movement towards an Open Science is well engaged and irreversible. It includes Open Access publishing, Open Data and Open Collaborations with several new orientations, among which citizen science. Indeed, in the digital era, the way research is performed, its output shared and published is changing significantly, as are the expectations of policy makers and society at large.

Born-Open Data experiments are encouraged for better open science practices. To be adopted, Born-Open data practices must be easy to implement. Herein, I introduce a package for E-Prime such that the data files are automatically saved on a GitHub repository. The BornOpenData package for E-Prime works seamlessly and performs the upload as soon as the experiment is finished so that there is no additional steps to perform beyond placing a package call within E-Prime. Because E-Prime files are not standard tab-separated files, I also provide an R function that retrieves the data directly from GitHub into a data frame ready to be analyzed. At this time, there are no standards as to what should constitute an adequate open-access data repository so I propose a few suggestions that any future Born-Open data system could follow for easier use by the research community.

This study undertook a bibliometric mapping analysis of research papers on Open Educational Practices (OEP) in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. This study functions as a guide for new research, serving to identify trends in the OEP field and compare the existing research so as to identify gaps and promising future paths. A total of 635 studies were obtained; however, only 156 were finally selected for the analysis. VOSviewer software was used to identify the most frequently used keywords and terms in the abstracts and titles. This software was also used to analyse the studies for co-authorship and citations. The findings showed that research on OEP started in 2007 and focused on higher education, including open and distance higher education. Most of the OEP studies were published in English as journal articles, in particular, many were published in Distance Education, International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning, and Open Praxis. The United Kingdom, Spain, and Australia were the top contributors to the OEP literature. The analysis of keywords and terms in the titles and abstracts revealed that current OEP trends covered only open pedagogy and open collaboration, suggesting a need for more research on other trends, such as open assessment, open data, and open science. The results also suggested that future research needs to focus more on inclusive open educational practices that accommodate students with disabilities.

In education, scientific research should play an important role in improving learner outcomes by informing and enhancing policy and practice. However, a substantial gap exists between research and practice in the field. To close this gap, researchers in educational psychology can apply open-science practices to increase the credibility, impact, and equity of their research. In this article, we examine three open-science practices -- open data and code, open access and preprints, and crowdsourcing -- that are well-suited to foster credibility, impact, and equity of research. For each open-science practice, we briefly discuss what the practice is and how it works, its primary benefits, some important limitations and challenges, and a thorny issue related to the practice. In the landscape of Open Science, Open Data (OD) plays a crucial role as data are one of the most basic components of research, despite their diverse formats across scientific disciplines. Opening up data is a recent concern for policy makers and researchers, as the basis for good Open Science practices. The common factor underlying these new practices—the relevance of promoting Open Data circulation and reuse—is mostly a social form of knowledge sharing and construction. However, while data sharing is being strongly promoted by policy making and is becoming a frequent practice in some disciplinary fields, Open Data sharing is much less developed in Social Sciences and in educational research. In this study, practices of OD publication and sharing in the field of Educational Technology are explored. The aim is to investigate Open Data sharing in a selection of Open Data repositories, as well as in the academic social network site ResearchGate. The 23 Open Datasets selected across five OD platforms were analysed in terms of (a) the metrics offered by the platforms and the affordances for social activity; (b) the type of OD published; (c) the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) data principles compliance; and (d) the extent of presence and related social activity on ResearchGate. The results show a very low social activity in the platforms and very few correspondences in ResearchGate that highlight a limited social life surrounding Open Datasets. Future research perspectives as well as limitations of the study are interpreted in the discussion.

The open science movement, based on the statements of Budapest (2002), Bethesda (2003) and Berlin (2003), and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, defined by the UN in 2015, aims at accessing scientific literature through free availability and widespread scientific data on the WWW. In memory institutions, the availability of open access content aims to connect with users, in a new form of relationship benefited by the use of Web 2.0 platforms and citizen science projects. The purpose of this article is to identify and map trends in open data and citizen science projects in the National Archives, Library and Museum and to verify whether they are (or not) aligned with their foreign counterparts. It concludes by the still incipient but growing trend in Portugal, which can be partially explained by the fact that the coordination services in these areas do not promote projects on the Web 2.0.

Background: Numerous mechanisms exist to incentivise researchers to share their data. This scoping review aims to identify and summarise evidence of the efficacy of different interventions to promote open data practices and provide an overview of current research. Methods: This scoping review is based on data identified from Web of Science and LISTA, limited from 2016 to 2021. A total of 1128 papers were screened, with 38 items being included. Items were selected if they focused on designing or evaluating an intervention or presenting an initiative to incentivise sharing. Items comprised a mixture of research papers, opinion pieces and descriptive articles. Results: Seven major themes in the literature were identified: publisher/journal data sharing policies, metrics, software solutions, research data sharing agreements in general, open science ‘badges’, funder mandates, and initiatives. Conclusions: A number of key messages for data sharing include: the need to build on existing cultures and practices, meeting people where they are and tailoring interventions to support them; the importance of publicising and explaining the policy/service widely; the need to have disciplinary data champions to model good practice and drive cultural change; the requirement to resource interventions properly; and the imperative to provide robust technical infrastructure and protocols, such as labelling of data sets, use of DOIs, data standards and use of data repositories.
