Belminus santosmalletae, a new triatomine species, is described based on a specimen from Panama, deposited in the collection of the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, USA. Attempts failed to identify this specimen using the keys by Lent and Wygodzinsky (1979) and Sandoval et al. (2007). A comparison was made with specimens of Belminus Stål, 1859 specimens deposited at the Triatominae collection at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CTIOC), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and with previous descriptions of Belminus species. These comparisons showed the specimen represents a new species, described in the present paper. It differs from other species of the genus mainly by the grainy tegument, scarce pilosity along the body, and the number of tubercles observed on the pronotum.

AbstractTelenomus reynoldsi n. sp. (Scelionidae: Telenominae) is described as an egg parasite of Geocoris punctipes Say and G. pallens Stål in California. The parasite has been recovered from cotton fields at Thermal and Indio, and from strawberry fields at El Toro, California. Additional material deposited in the U.S. National Museum of Natural History has been recovered from Geocoris collected at Buttonwillow and Weed, California.

A catalog of the type material of 59 taxa of Neotropical Pierinae housed in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, is presented. Each entry includes the species-group name, the original combination quoted from the original publication, the type locality, the type specimens with their labels, and notes about current taxonomic status. One new synonym has been established, Euterpe dysoni Doubleday, 1847 = Leodonta marginata Schaus, 1902. Lectotypes are designated for 5 species group taxa: Archonias intermedia Schaus, 1913, Hesperocharis jaliscana Schaus, 1898, H. paranensis Schaus, 1898, Pieris sublineata Schaus, 1902, and P. limona Schaus, 1913.

The genus Trichogorgia (Cnidaria: Octocorallia) is composed of mesophotic gorgonians, and has been traditionally included in the Family Chrysogorgiidae. The family is polyphyletic and in need of generic morphological reassessments. Herein, two new species of that genus are described, based on material deposited in the National Museum of Natural History—Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, we provide a taxonomic key to all species of Trichogorgia, also briefly discussing important characters of the group and closely related taxa.

Neocylloepus Brown, 1970 and Pilielmis Hinton, 1971 are Neotropical genera of riffle beetles, mainly distributed in Central America and the north of South America. These genera are here reported for the first time from Venezuela, and a new species, Pilielmis shepardi sp. nov. is described and illustrated. AbstractA reassessment of the taxonomic relationships of North American gigantopterids is presented in light of an examination of large populations of specimens housed in the US National Museum of Natural History. Variations in venation and subtle aspects of leaf shape facilitate refined understanding of the relationships and diversity of the North American gigantopterid species leading to an improved understanding of the taxonomic and biogeographic relationships of this group, which are found most abundantly in western equatorial Pangea and Cathaysia. Current literature suggests that there are eight North American genera, however, this study has revealed a morphological overlap of several previously defined genera, leading to the conclusion thatGigantopteridiumencompasses the species previously treated asCathaysiopteris yochelsoniias well as a new species,Gigantopteridium utebaturianum. The transfer ofC.yochelsoniitoGigantopteridium yochelsoniisuggests thatCathaysiopterismay represent a genus endemic to Cathaysia, limiting the biogeographical connection between the regions toZeilleropteris,Gigantopteridium,Euparyphoselis, andGigantonoclea.

Karen Osborn and Linda Ward launched an initiative to establish International Polychaete Day on 1st of July to celebrate Kristian’s 80th birthday. This took place in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, where he spent his last 35 years as an active researcher. This was a magnificent idea that will help remember him and to encourage the interest for studying polychaetes. The wish is that a similar celebration be done as well in many other institutions and countries.

Spilogona breviaristata sp. nov. from South Africa is described and the morphology of the male terminalia of seven African Spilogona Schnabl (Diptera, Muscidae) species are described and illustrated: Spilogona biguttata Emden, Spilogona fuscotriangulata Emden, Spilogona natalensis Zielke, Spilogona pertinisetodes Emden, Spilogona quasifasciata Emden, Spilogona semifasciata Emden and Spilogona spinipes (Bigot). The material studied is deposited in the Natural History Museum (BMNH), London, United Kingdom, and paratypes of the new species are also in the Museu Nacional, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History (OUMNH), Oxford, United Kingdom.
