Background: The acute physiological changes induced by focal retinal photocoagulation (PC) have been largely unexplored. Methods: This was a case-series study. We recorded multifocal electroretinograms (mfERGs) just before PC, and mfERGs were also recorded 5′, 15′, one hour, 24 h, and one week after the PCs. Transient changes of mfERGs were analyzed in eyes which underwent PCs to treat diabetic macular edema. The mfERGs recorded from the predominantly irradiated area and that from non-irradiated areas were analyzed separately. Results: Fifteen eyes of 15 patients were included in this study. The mfERGs elicited from non-irradiated areas did not change after PC, but the mfERGs elicited from the irradiated area changed with time; the amplitude was larger at 60′ than that before (p < 0.05) and at 5′ after PC (p < 0.01) and significantly smaller at 24 h and 1 week than that before and at 60′ after the PC (p < 0.01). The implicit time was significantly prolonged after PC. mfERG on irradiated area with the severe diabetic change was less altered after PCs. Conclusions: The transient increase in the amplitude at 60′ likely resulted from a biological amplification of partially damaged cells adjacent to the PC spots. The mfERGs manifested the dynamic alterations of the retinal function following PCs.

Abstract Background: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of subconjunctival triamcinolone acetonide (TA) injections for treating uveitic macular edema (UME). Methods: This retrospective case series study included patients with UME who received subconjunctival TA injections with a minimum follow-up period of 6 months. The main outcome was central macular thickness. The secondary outcomes included the best corrected visual acuity, recurrence rate and intraocular pressure. Results: In total, 68 patients (83 eyes) were enrolled in this study. The mean CMT decreased from 456.9 ± 171.1 μm at baseline to 324 ± 175.9 μm, 305.6 μm ± 147.7 μm, 331.8 ± 154.3 μm and 281.1 ± 147.6 μm at 1, 2, 3 and 6 months postinjection, respectively (all P < 0.01). A total of 21/83 eyes exhibited elevated IOPs, which was controlled with topical IOP-lowering agents in 14 eyes, whereas 7 eyes got subconjunctival TA deposit surgically removed. Conclusion: subconjunctival TA injections appear to be safe and effective for UME.Key Words: Triamcinolone acetonide; subconjunctival injection; uveitis; macular edema

Objective: To determine the efficacy of Frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser (532 nm) green laser in treatment of diabetic macular edema Study Design: This is a descriptive case series study. Setting: Study carried out at Ophthalmology Department, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University Larkana, from 01-10-2019 to 31-03-2020 (06 months). Materials and Methods: The patients with diabetic macular edema and were advised focal laser photocoagulation with help of frequency doubled Nd: YAG laser (532 nm) green laser. Improvement in visual acuity >2 lines after 3 months on snellen’s chart from the baseline was labeled as efficacy positive. Results: The total of 150 patients were included to assess efficacy of frequency doubled Nd: YAG laser (532 nm) green laser in treating diabetic macular edema as a result improvement in visual acuity of 98 (65.33%) and no improvement or same vision in 52 (34.67%) patients was observed. Conclusion: It is to be concluded that frequency doubled Nd: YAG laser (532 nm) green laser is an effective, useful and non-invasive diagnostic tool in treating diabetic macular edema.

Objetive: To determine the microbial agents on UCI patients who have beendiagnosed with nosocomial sinusitis at the San Jose Hospital, (Bogota, Colombia) in a two-year period. Design: Case series study. Materials and methods: Patients who were older than 18-year olds, with a hospitalization longer than 48 hours who developed nosocomial sinusitis, according to the criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) were included. Two techniques were employed for data collection: puncture and maxillary sinus wash. Results: 19 patients fulfill the criteria requirements for nosocomial sinusitis. Average age was 55 years old. Population mostly was composed by male individuals. 94.7% had a gastric tube intervention; 89.5% had tracheal intubation 89.5% mechanical ventilation. Polymicrobial isolation with gram positive, gram negative, anaerobic and fungi were identified. Mortality in critical care unites was 32%. Conclusions: An adequate sensitivity to treatment with vancomycin and piperacillin tazobactam was evidenced in this pathology. To perform a washing or maxillary sinus puncture had the same efficiency fordiagnosing this disease.
