Cracking in non-load-bearing internal partition walls is a serious problem that frequently occurs in new buildings within the short term after putting them into service or even before completion of construction. Sometimes, it is so considerable that it cannot be accepted by the occupiers. The article presents tests of cracking in ceramic walls with a door opening connected in a rigid and flexible way along vertical edges. The first analyzes were conducted using the finite element method (FEM), and afterward, the measurements of deformations and stresses in walls on deflecting floors were performed on a full scale in the actual building structure. The measurements enabled to determine floor deformations leading to cracking of walls and to establish a dependency between the values of tensile stresses within the area of the door opening corners and their location along the length of walls and type of vertical connection with the structure.

The aim of the paper is to present a global analysis of a precast, reinforced building structure. At the design stage, information about structural behaviour of particular elements and the whole structure as well as its response to applied loads are obtained. While solving the problem, the load-bearing elements and the type and deformability of connections have to be defined. The latter is especially significant in the case of precast structure models. Calculations according to the analytical method are going to be verified by the finite element method.

AbstractThe actual load-bearing capacity of elements of a building system can be calculated by dynamic parameters, in particular by resonant frequency and compliance. The prerequisites for solving such a problem by the finite element method (FEM) are presented in the article. First, modern vibration tests demonstrate high accuracy in determination of these parameters, which reflects reliability of the diagnosis. Secondly, most modern computational complexes do not include a functional for calculating the load-bearing capacity of an element according to the input values of resonance frequencies. Thirdly, FEM is the basis for development of software tools for automating the computation process. The article presents the method for calculating flexural stiffness and moment of inertia of a beam construction system by its own frequencies. The method includes calculation algorithm realizing the finite element method.

Purpose. The purpose is to develop the calculation methods for minimizing the load on the fastening system of the preparatory mine working in difficult mining and geological conditions of its maintenance. Methods. By analysing the multivariate computational experiments on the study of the stress-strain state of the load-bearing elements of the ‘massif – support’ system in the preparatory mine workings by means of the finite-element method, as well as mine observations and measurements of displacement in the coal-overlaying rock formation. Findings. An algorithm has been developed for searching the rational modes of the fastening system resistance and methods for minimizing the load on the support of the preparatory mine working, maintained in very complex mining and geological conditions. Originality. The methodical principles have been developed of minimizing the load on the fastening system of the preparatory mine working, which are based on the use of a combination of stress-strain state studies of the ‘massif – support’ system by means of the finite element method and provisions of normative documents for calculating the dimensions of the dome of natural equilibrium of the mine working roof rocks. Practical implications. The operation modes optimisation of the load-bearing elements interaction of the mine working fastening system reduces the material and labour costs during its construction and increases its stability during operation. Keywords: analysis, calculation, optimization, support, preparatory mine working, stope works, roof rocks, collapse

The finite element method has been used for determining the stress distribution and the displacements due to gravity around an unlined tunnel driven through a semi-infinite medium, characterized by three idealized material behaviors reflecting approximately a short term behavior of natural undisturbed insensitive and sensitive clays. The knowledge of stress and displacement fields around an unlined tunnel can be used for evaluating the need for supports according to the acceptability of expected deformations.

By increasing the application of lightweight constructions, sound transmission between the adjacent enclosures becomes a more important consideration in designing new buildings. In this article, the parameters that may significantly affect the sound transmission level through a partition between two adjacent enclosures are investigated, i.e. geometrical dimensions, arrangement of enclosures, boundary conditions, multi-layered partitions, and framed (or reinforced) conditions of the partitions. For this purpose, sound transmission is modelled using the finite-element method. The obtained results from sound transmission using Perspex party walls with different width and boundary conditions are compared with those obtained from a double-layered wall with an air layer. The effects of an enclosure's arrangements and dimensions on sound transmission of the party walls are also studied. Using the cross-framed party wall causes more noise reduction than the double-layered party wall. The results also show that sound transmission between rooms with an asymmetric arrangement is less than that obtained from a symmetric configuration.

At present, it is scarcely possible to represent results in deterministic calculation in the definite finite element analysis. Stochastic finite element method is on the basis of the combination of mathematical statistics and the finite element method. Then we can use mathematical statistics to analyze the randomness of the parameters, get the data of dependent displacement and stress, and finally calculate all kinds of features. In this paper, modeling and calculation function and unique PDS module offered by ANSYS are applied to analyze the reliability of lateral load bearing single-piles.

Abstract The study presents an analysis of steel I-beam warping. The calculations were made for hot-rolled IPE200 hinged beams with different lengths. After determining load-bearing capacity using the GMNIA method, the beams were strengthened with bimoment restraints at each end. The changes in critical moment and load-bearing capacity were then evaluated. The study presents the manner in which the material and geometric imperfections have been determined. The GMNIA calculations were conducted using the Finite Element Method in Abaqus software. The results were then compared to results obtained with traditional methods and acquired from LT Beam software.

The effect of joining by extrusion welding on the tensional stiffness and strength of a Polypropylene copolymer was analysed. Short-term and creep tests with laboratory specimens were conducted. Welded joint sub-components were simulated with the finite element method and the results were validated by experiments.
