In order to improve the life cycle and cutting ability of a suspension abrasive water jet nozzle at the same time, hydrodynamics technology, an enumeration method and multiparameter orthogonal optimization are used to optimize the nozzle section geometry, taking the inlet diameter coefficient of the nozzle, the axial length coefficient of the contraction section and the contraction section curve as optimization variables, and selecting the peak velocity and the unit flow erosion rate as the indicators, it is concluded that the optimal contraction section curve is a Widosinski curve, the optimal inlet diameter coefficient of the nozzle is 0.333 and the optimal axial length coefficient of the contraction section is 2.857. Compared with the commercial product single cone nozzle, the performance of the optimal section nozzle improves by 5.64% and the life cycle increases by 43.2%. On this basis, the effects of operating parameters, including inlet pressure, abrasive particle flow rate and abrasive particle size, are further studied. It is determined that the optimal section nozzle has the best performance under the above operating parameters. It is demonstrated that by optimizing the nozzle section geometry, the cutting capacity and life cycle of the nozzle are improved, the performance of the nozzle can be significantly improved and the optimization of the performance of the nozzle is realized.

It has been found that the impact performance of water jets can be changed by its properties, which include pressure, additive, and mode of jet. Thus, an abrasive water jet (AWJ) has been developed as a new method. However, there is little research on the effect of abrasive concentration on the impact performance of abrasive jets. Thus, the SPH method is used to establish an abrasive water jet crushing concrete model to study the effect of abrasive concentration on the impact force, concrete internal energy, abrasive particle distribution, crushing depth, and damage and crushing efficiencies under different concrete compressive strengths and abrasive densities. The results indicate that there is little effect of the abrasive concentration on the peak impact force under different compressive strengths and abrasive densities, while the mean impact force tends to increase linearly with the abrasive concentration. The internal energy of the concrete increases stepwise with the abrasive concentration under different compressive strengths and abrasive densities. The concentration of 10%∼20% is the rapid increasing stage. The crushing depth and damage efficiencies are all maximum at a concentration of 20% under different compressive strengths and abrasive densities. After the concrete was impacted by the water from the water jet, it is divided into rebounding particles and intrusive particles. The more the intrusive particles, the easier the concrete to be crushed and damaged.

Abrasive water jet machining is considered as a promising technique in hard and brittle material processing. This paper studies the erosion performance of the alumina ceramics in the different process parameters. In the erosion experiments, alumina ceramics wafers were eroded by the abrasive waterjet machining. The single factor experiments were carried out to understand the effect of different process parameters (jet impact angle, standoff distance, water pressure, abrasive particle diameter) on the material removal rate (MRR), the removal depth and surface roughness (Ra). The experimental results can provide guidance for alumina ceramics abrasive water jet cutting and polishing.

This paper expatiated on principles of high pressure abrasive water jet descaling; used GAMBIT and some experience parameters to create the geometry model of the nozzles and the outflow field; used Fluent to simulate the high pressure abrasive water jet under the condition of different jet standoff distance, different impact angle, different mix angle, different abrasive particle size, different abrasive concentration and different abrasive material. Through the analysis of the simulation results, this paper put forward the optimal selection of these parameters.

The abrasive water jet machining is known as a cold cutting process and can be effective for developing cut in the bone in orthopedic surgery to prevent thermal necrosis. This research examined surface roughness and cutting quality of bovine femur bone using abrasive water jet machining. Furthermore, the effect of three parameters was studied including water pressure, traverse speed, and the type of abrasive particles. The feed rate of the abrasive particles was considered 100 g/min, and the levels obtained from pure water jet cutting, bone powder abrasive water jet machining, and sugar abrasive water jet machining were compared with each other. Application of bone powder as an abrasive particle caused improved cutting quality, when compared with pure water jet, and in the best case, it resulted Ra and Rz values of 7.36 and 54.76 μm, respectively at the pressure of 3500 bar and traverse speed of 50 mm/min. The minimum surface roughness was obtained using sugar abrasive particles at the pressure of 3500 bar and traverse speed of 50 mm/min. The values of Ra and Rz parameters measured at the most desirable state were 3.87 and 19.72 μm, respectively. The results suggested that use of sugar as an abrasive material, in comparison with pure water jet and bone powder water jet, resulted in improved cutting quality. Furthermore, elevation of water pressure and reduction of traverse speed had a significant effect on improving surface roughness.

Ultrasonic vibration-assisted machining (UVAM) is an effective and promising technology for processing hard and brittle materials, it has been explored in many experimental and theoretical investigations. In this paper, a study on the erosion performance of monocrystalline silicon with UVAM is presented and discussed. In the erosion experiments, monocrystalline silicon wafers were eroded by the abrasive water jet machine assisted with an ultrasonic vibration system. A contrast experiment was carried out firstly to study the influence of the ultrasonic vibration, and then an orthogonal experiment investigation was carried out to understand the effect of process variables (the abrasive particle diameter, jet impact angle, standoff distance, abrasive mass flow rate and ultrasonic vibration power) on the depth of erosion and material removal rate (MRR). The experimental results revealed that ultrasonic vibration-assisted abrasive water jet erosion (UVA-AWJE) can obviously improve the depth of the erosion and MRR compared with those in traditional AWJE and the variation trends of the effect of the abrasive particle diameter, jet impact angle, standoff distance and abrasive mass flow rate on the erosion performance in UVA-AWJE are very similar to those effect in the traditional AWJ machining.
