An occurrence of vein U-Mo mineralization is located in the Majerská valley near Čučma, about 7 km to the NNE of the district town of Rožňava (Eastern Slovakia). Mineralization is hosted in the acidic metapyroclastics of the Silurian Bystrý Potok Fm. (Gemeric Unit), and originated in the following stages: (I.) quartz I, fluorapatite I; (II.) quartz II, fluorapatite II, zircon, rutile chlorite, tourmaline; (III.) uraninite, molybdenite, U-Ti oxides; (IV.) pyrite I, ullmannite, gersdorffite, cobaltite; (Va.) galena, bismuth, tetradymite, joséite A and B, Bi3(TeS)2 mineral phase, (BiPb)(TeS) mineral phase, ikunolite; (Vb.) minerals of the kobellite–tintinaite series, cosalite; (VI.) pyrite II; (VII.) titanite, chlorite; and (VIII.) supergene mineral phases. The chemical in-situ electron-microprobe U-Pb dating of uraninite from a studied vein yielded an average age of around 265 Ma, corresponding to the Guadalupian Epoch of Permian; the obtained data corresponds with the age of Gemeric S-type granites. The age correlation of uraninite with the Gemeric S-type granites and the spatial connection of the studied mineralization with the Čučma granite allows us to assume that it is a Hercynian, granite-related (perigranitic) mineralization.

TASK8 was designed as an electron microprobe control program with maximum flexibility and versatility, lending itself to a wide variety of applications. While using TASKS in the microprobe laboratory of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, we decided to incorporate the capability of using subroutines which perform specific end-member calculations for nearly any type of mineral phase that might be analyzed in the laboratory. This procedure minimizes the need for post-processing of the data to perform such calculations as element ratios or end-member or formula proportions. It also allows real time assessment of each data point.The use of unique “mineral codes” to specify the list of elements to be measured and the type of calculation to perform on the results was first used in the microprobe laboratory at the California Institute of Technology to optimize the analysis of mineral phases. This approach was used to create a series of subroutines in TASK8 which are called by a three letter code.

The genesis and the physical characteristics of the Neogene red beds of the cedar hills surrounding Thessaloniki are studied in this paper. The peri-urban forest, which covers these hills, has a 3,022 ha area. The topographic relief is smooth and is divided in eight small drainage basins, tapped through small creeks. The elevation of the surrounding hills varies between 85 and 560 m. The dominant land slopes vary between 20 and 55%. All the samples are coarse grained, poorly sorted and friable and present earthy lustre and red colour because of the extensive presence of iron oxides. Angular to sub-angular rock fragments derived from the metamorphic bedrock are very common. Petrographically, the studied red beds belong to the clayey sands. The extended presence (41-66%) of coarse silt and sand size grains (>20 pm) in the samples suggests a mild intensity of in situ weathering of the bedrock. X-ray diffraction analysis of the coarsest fractions 250-20 pm and 20-2 μιτι revealed in decreasing abundance the presence of quartz, feldspars, epidote, micas, chlorite, pyroxenes, amphiboles, and talc. These fractions contain the 2M polytype of mica, while in the fraction <2 pm the 1Μα polytype of illite predominates. In the clay fraction (<2 pm) illite, smectite, and chlorite predominate. The presence of mixed-layer minerals is limited, testifying the almost complete character of hydrolysis of the primary minerals. The formation of red beds took place on low relief land under alternating wet and dry seasons, which prevail in the eastern Mediterranean region since Neogene. The clay minerals are the in situ weathering products of the primary minerals of the greenschists, gneisses and gabbros predominating in the studied area. The extensive presence of clay size grains (11-26%) in the samples, their poor sorting, and their sub-angular morphology, indicate that the red beds are texturally immature. In addition, the abundance of feldspars and Fe-Mg minerals reflects mineralogical immaturity. The low relief and the long-lasting tectonic stability in the Thessaloniki district were essential for the significant thickness of the red beds. The oxygen isotope data of the <0.2 pm fraction (+18.2 to +18.8%o) confirm the pedogenic origin of the clay minerals present. The red beds studied present low plasticity with liquid limit (WÏ) 26.9 to 33.4% and plasticity index (lp) 9.1 to 17.3%. In addition, they have high consolidation index (lc) values (1.03 to 2.28). The swelling potential is low to medium and the activity varies between 0.5 and 1.0. The consolidation and induration degree of the samples analyzed is low, because of the great range of their mineralogical composition and the mild conditions of pressure and temperature to which they have been submitted. The studied red beds are not considered problematic for the foundation of various constructions on them.

We present the results of a detailed petrographic study of fresh coherent samples of the Menominee kimberlite sampled at site 73, located in Menominee County, MI, USA. Our objective is to account for its unusual and complex paragenetic sequence. Several generations of olivine, ilmenite, and spinel-group minerals are described. Early olivine and ilmenite are xenocrystic and were replaced or overgrown by primary minerals. Zoned microcrysts of olivine have a xenocrystic core mantled by a first rim in which rutile, geikielite, and spinel s.s. (spinel sensu stricto) cocrystallized. The in situ U–Pb dating of a microcryst of primary rutile yielded 168.9 ± 4.4 Ma, which was interpreted as the age of emplacement. The groundmass consists of olivine, spinel s.s., a magnesian ulvöspinel–ulvöspinel–magnetite (MUM) spinel, calcite, and dolomite. An extremely low activity of Si is suggested by the crystallization of spinel s.s. instead of phlogopite in the groundmass. The presence of djerfisherite microcrysts indicates high activities of Cl and S during the late stages of melt crystallization. The occurrence of two distinct spinel-group minerals (spinel s.s. and qandilite-rich MUM) in the groundmass is interpreted as clear evidence of the mingling of a magnesiocarbonatitic melt with a dominant kimberlitic melt.

An improved understanding of in situ mineralization in the presence of dissolved arsenic and both ferrous and ferric iron is necessary because it is an important geochemical process in the fate and transformation of arsenic and iron in groundwater systems. This work aimed at evaluating mineral phases that could form and the related transformation of arsenic species during coprecipitation. We conducted batch tests to precipitate ferrous (133 mM) and ferric (133 mM) ions in sulfate (533 mM) solutions spiked with As (0–100 mM As(V) or As(III)) and titrated with solid NaOH (400 mM). Goethite and lepidocrocite were formed at 0.5–5 mM As(V) or As(III). Only lepidocrocite formed at 10 mM As(III). Only goethite formed in the absence of added As(V) or As(III). Iron (II, III) hydroxysulfate green rust (sulfate green rust or SGR) was formed at 50 mM As(III) at an equilibrium pH of 6.34. X-ray analysis indicated that amorphous solid products were formed at 10–100 mM As(V) or 100 mM As(III). The batch tests showed that As removal ranged from 98.65–100%. Total arsenic concentrations in the formed solid phases increased with the initial solution arsenic concentrations ranging from 1.85–20.7 g kg−1. Substantial oxidation of initially added As(III) to As(V) occurred, whereas As(V) reduction did not occur. This study demonstrates that concentrations and species of arsenic in the parent solution influence the mineralogy of coprecipitated solid phases, which in turn affects As redox transformations.

Re sulfides were discovered in Cu–Ni–platinum-group elements (PGE) ores of the Zhelos and Tokty-Oi intrusions. These intrusions can be considered as products of the mantle superplume responsible for Rodinia’s break-up. The mineral compositions were determined in situ in polished samples. Electron microprobe analyses were mostly consistent with a general formula of (Cu,Fe,Mo,Os,Re)5S8, (Cu,Fe,Mo,Os,Re)4S7, and (Cu,Fe,Mo,Re)S2. One of the major features of Re sulfide from the Zhelos intrusion is its high osmium content. The ΣMe/S ratio for a part of our data is consistent with that of the tarkianite. Re sulfides from the Tokty-Oi have a ΣMe/S ratio similar to those in rheniite or dzeskazganite, but differ from them by the presence of Fe and Cu and the metal-to-metal ratio. The localization of the Re sulfide within the chalcopyrite suggests its crystallization from the residual Cu-rich liquid.

AbstractStructural formulae and other crystallochemical parameters were used to study different species of dioctahedral micas in clay and coarse gravel fractions of horizons from a red soil (Ultic Haploxeralf) in southern Spain. Mineralogical analyses using X-ray powder diffraction, and measurements of theb0parameter revealed dioctahedral micas, illite and paragonite. Structural formulae established from electron microprobe analysis and energy dispersive X-ray analysis showed the illites to be K mica related in elemental composition and structure to muscovite and phengite. The paragonites were found to be closer to ideal mica. Structural formulae for Na-K dioctahedral micas were obtained with crystallochemical characteristics intermediate between those of Na micas and K micas. The possibilty of these micas representing individual mineral phases or intergrowths of Na and K micas is discussed. In the soil profile, micas from the Bt horizon showed the largest crystallochemical changes induced by pedogenesis.

The alluvium over an area of about 50 square miles around Lead-hills in Lanarkshire, is auriferous. In many places the precious metal may be rendered visible after fifteen or twenty minutes washing with the primitive wooden trough employed by the local gold-seekers. Frequently nuggets have been found weighing from one to four or five pennyweights, and these are often either contained in pieces of loose quartz, or have quartz fragments attached to them; there are therefore good reasons to believe that the gold found in the red stratum of clay lying immediately above the rock has been derived from the numerous quartz veins which traverse the district. The author was one day searching, along with some friends, for gold quartz in situ, and while examining a vein which crosses a gulch in the hills, called the “Gold Scars,” found cavities in the quartz filled with a peculiar pasty substance, which appeared at first sight like minute scales of silver, which had been precipitated from a solution. Our first impression was that it was silver, but its behaviour in water soon cleared away the delusion; it rendered the water exceedingly turbid and white, and the suspended matter was a long time in settling.
