Nutrition interventions developed using behaviour theory may be more effective than those without theoretical underpinnings. This study aimed to document the number of theory-based healthy eating interventions, the involvement of dietitians/nutritionists and the behaviour theories employed from 2000 to 2020. We conducted a review of publications related to healthy eating interventions that used behaviour change theories. Interventional studies published in English between 2000 and 2020 were retrieved from searching Medline, Cinahl, Embase, Psycinfo and Cochrane Central. Citation, country of origin, presence or absence of dietitian/nutritionist authors, participants, dietary behaviours, outcomes, theories and any behaviour change techniques (BCTs) stated were extracted. The publication trends on a yearly basis were recorded. A total of 266 articles were included. The number of theory-based interventions increased over the two decades. The number of studies conducted by dietitians/nutritionists increased, but since 2012, increases have been driven by other researchers. Social cognitive theory was the most used behaviour theory. Dietitians/nutritionists contributed to growth in publication of theory-based healthy eating interventions, but the proportion of researchers from other professions engaged in this field increased markedly. The reasons for this growth in publications from other professions is unknown but conjectured to result from greater prominence of dietary behaviours within the context of an obesity epidemic.

Abstract Objectives This study was to investigate whether social cognitive measures toward healthy eating are related to diet quality and eating behaviors among marriage immigrant women in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Methods A questionnaire was based on the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) and included the personal, behavioral and environmental factors from the SCT. The questionnaire developed by literature review, qualitative interviews, and pilot field test. The quality of diet and eating behaviors were assessed using the Nutrition Quotient for adults (NQ-A), which was validated and translated into subjects’ mother tongue. The survey was conducted on 153 marriage immigrant women from China, Vietnam, Japan, Philippines, Cambodia, Mongolia, Taiwan and Russia residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. Around 49.0% of subjects (n = 75) need monitoring according to the NQ-A scores. Results First, in personal factors assessing importance and confidence for healthy eating, scores of self-evaluative outcome expectations and self-efficacy were lower in subjects required monitoring compared to their counterparts. Second, in behavioral factors, a half of questions regarding behavioral strategies for healthy eating showed lower scores in subjects required monitoring. Last, in environmental factors, scores of social support were also lower in the monitoring required group, which indicates they were less likely to receive help from family members for healthy eating than their counterparts. Conclusions The results from this study suggest that individual dietary behaviors can be changed by individual, behavioral, and environmental factors from the perspective of social cognitive theory. Abstract Objectives To explore the perspectives and experiences of children and their mothers towards healthy eating habits and regular physical activity in Lebanon and to identify potential strategies that can be recommended for future interventions to promote healthy lifestyles among children. Methods Qualitative research methodology and the social cognitive theory were used. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were conducted with children (aged 10–11 years) and their mothers, respectively, from two private and one public schools in Beirut, Lebanon. Thematic inductive analytical approach was adopted. Results A total of six FGDs and 11 in-depth interviews with mothers were conducted from February till November 2020. Four main overarching themes emerged. Theme 1 pertained to the different views of children and mothers regarding the meaning of healthy eating and physical activity and their perceived impact on children's wellbeing. Theme 2 revealed a set of intrapersonal, social, and environmental determinants, which were reported differently between children and their mothers. Participants in our study who were interviewed after the COVID-19 pandemic talked about how their eating habits were adversely affected as a result of the sudden changes in daily schedules, boredom and anxiety. Theme 3 reflected the role of schools and sports facilities in setting a good example for children's healthy eating and active behaviors. Theme 4 revolved around participants’ suggestions to receive support for healthy eating and lifestyle habits at multiple levels, including intrapersonal, family/social, community, and policy-level strategies. Our findings highlight the importance of using theory-driven interventions, such as the social cognitive theory, to improve long-term health behaviors. Conclusions Findings highlight the multiple influences that pertain to children's eating and activity habits and shed light on the need to use child- and parental-driven strategies in the planning and development of programs to promote children's health and wellbeing. Adults with mild-moderate learning disabilities tend to have poorer diets, lower physical activity and greater sedentary behaviour than those in the population. Several previous intervention studies aimed to address this, most using social cognitive theory, but with inconsistent implementation and mixed results. There has also been little exploration of perspectives of this group and their carers into what may aid behaviour change efforts and previous studies have not taken a theory-based approach to doing so. This may be in part, due to difficulties adults with mild-moderate learning disabilities have with complex concepts. Thus this study aimed to conduct social cognitive theory based interviews with adults with learning disabilities and carers, using an adapted protocol to facilitate meaningful participation, and gather data to inform future health behaviour change interventions with this population.

PurposeThis systematic literature review focusses on original research that examines the effect of persuasive architectural interventions on stimulating health behaviour. This paper gives an overview of the empirical evidence and aims to examine the evidence for health behaviour change through architectural interventions and the underlying theoretical pathways and mechanisms using social cognitive theory.Design/methodology/approachThis paper reviewed 40 peer-reviewed articles found through Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed and a supplementary hand search and examined for effect, type of interventions, type of behaviour and underlying mechanisms using social cognitive theory.FindingsThis review shows that architectural interventions can stimulate healthy behaviour. However, much of the research focusses on specific health behaviours (physical activity), in specific target groups (children or older adults) and with specific types of interventions (supplying provisions). Furthermore, the effect of the physical environment on cognitive factors should be taken into consideration.Research limitations/implicationsHardly any research on smart architectural interventions for health behaviour change exists, but combining insights from product design and built environment has the potential to impact designing for health behaviour change.Originality/valueStimulating certain types of health behaviour can positively contribute to health goals and has been the focus of many health promotion practitioners over the years. The focus of health promotion interventions has primarily been on social and psychological factors. However, current research shows the importance of the physical environment as an influence on health behaviour. Potentially, with the use of smart technology, this effect could be enhanced.

Abstract Background Regular engagement in physical activity has well-established physical and psychological health benefits. Despite this, over a quarter of the global adult population is insufficiently physically active. Physical activity interventions grounded in behaviour change theory, such as the social-cognitive theory, are widely considered to be more effective than non-theoretical approaches. Such interventions set out to intervene on the ultimate outcome (physical activity), but also influence intermediate factors (social-cognitive theory constructs) which in turn, are believed to influence physical activity behaviour. The primary aim of the study was to use mediation analysis to examine whether changes in the social-cognitive theory and related constructs, in particular self-efficacy, outcome expectations, intentions, barriers and goal setting, mediated the effects of a smartphone-based social networking physical activity intervention. Methods Mediation analyses were conducted using the PROCESS Macro in SPSS to (i) calculate the regression coefficients for the effect of the independent variable (group allocation) on the hypothesised mediators (social-cognitive theory constructs), (ii) calculate the regression coefficient for the effect of the hypothesised mediators (social-cognitive theory constructs) on the dependent variable (objectively measured physical activity or self-report physical activity), independent of group assignment and (iii) determine the total, direct and indirect intervention effects. Results Data from 243 participants were included in the mediation analysis. There was no evidence of mediation for change in objectively measured MVPA or self-reported MVPA. Conclusions There was no conclusive evidence that any of the social-cognitive theory constructs mediated the relationship between an app-based intervention and change in physical activity. Ongoing efforts to develop and understand components that make physical activity app-based interventions effective are recommended. Trial registration This trial was registered with the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry (ACTRN12617000113358, date of registration 23 January, 2017).

In an attempt to fight the obesity epidemic, an unprecedented policy banning the sale of sugary beverages in containers over 16 ounces in selected public venues was proposed the city of New York. This policy is not without opposition from different sectors including the sugary beverage industry and civil organizations that portray it as a violation of consumers’ rights to choose. We explore the likelihood of such policy to be successful in curbing the obesity epidemic from a Social Cognitive Theory perspective.
