The haze in remote sensing images can cause the decline of image quality and bring many obstacles to the applications of remote sensing images. Considering the non-uniform distribution of haze in remote sensing images, we propose a single remote sensing image dehazing method based on the encoder–decoder architecture, which combines both wavelet transform and deep learning technology. To address the clarity issue of remote sensing images with non-uniform haze, we preliminary process the input image by the dehazing method based on the atmospheric scattering model, and extract the first-order low-frequency sub-band information of its 2D stationary wavelet transform as an additional channel. Meanwhile, we establish a large-scale hazy remote sensing image dataset to train and test the proposed method. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method obtains greater advantages over typical traditional methods and deep learning methods qualitatively. For the quantitative aspects, we take the average of four typical deep learning methods with superior performance as a comparison object using 500 random test images, and the peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) value using the proposed method is improved by 3.5029 dB, and the structural similarity (SSIM) value is improved by 0.0295, respectively. Based on the above, the effectiveness of the proposed method for the problem of remote sensing non-uniform dehazing is verified comprehensively.

Remote sensing image dehazing is an extremely complex issue due to the irregular and non-uniform distribution of haze. In this paper, a prior-based dense attentive dehazing network (DADN) is proposed for single remote sensing image haze removal. The proposed network, which is constructed based on dense blocks and attention blocks, contains an encoder-decoder architecture, which enables it to directly learn the mapping between the input images and the corresponding haze-free image, without being dependent on the traditional atmospheric scattering model (ASM). To better handle non-uniform hazy remote sensing images, we propose to combine a haze density prior with deep learning, where an initial haze density map (HDM) is firstly extracted from the original hazy image, and is subsequently utilized as the input of the network, together with the original hazy image. Meanwhile, a large-scale hazy remote sensing dataset is created for training and testing of the proposed method, which contains both uniform and non-uniform, synthetic and real hazy remote sensing images. Experimental results on the created dataset illustrate that the developed dehazing method obtains significant progresses over the state-of-the-art methods.

Landslide recognition is widely used in natural disaster risk management. Traditional landslide recognition is mainly conducted by geologists, which is accurate but inefficient. This article introduces multiple instance learning (MIL) to perform automatic landslide recognition. An end-to-end deep convolutional neural network is proposed, referred to as Multiple Instance Learning–based Landslide classification (MILL). First, MILL uses a large-scale remote sensing image classification dataset to build pre-train networks for landslide feature extraction. Second, MILL extracts instances and assign instance labels without pixel-level annotations. Third, MILL uses a new channel attention–based MIL pooling function to map instance-level labels to bag-level label. We apply MIL to detect landslides in a loess area. Experimental results demonstrate that MILL is effective in identifying landslides in remote sensing images.

In recent years, the collaborative representation-based classification (CRC) method has achieved great success in visual recognition by directly utilizing training images as dictionary bases. However, it describes a test sample with all training samples to extract shared attributes and does not consider the representation of the test sample with the training samples in a specific class to extract the class-specific attributes. For remote-sensing images, both the shared attributes and class-specific attributes are important for classification. In this paper, we propose a hybrid collaborative representation-based classification approach. The proposed method is capable of improving the performance of classifying remote-sensing images by embedding the class-specific collaborative representation to conventional collaborative representation-based classification. Moreover, we extend the proposed method to arbitrary kernel space to explore the nonlinear characteristics hidden in remote-sensing image features to further enhance classification performance. Extensive experiments on several benchmark remote-sensing image datasets were conducted and clearly demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed algorithm to state-of-the-art approaches.

Efficient and accurate semantic segmentation is the key technique for automatic remote sensing image analysis. While there have been many segmentation methods based on traditional hand-craft feature extractors, it is still challenging to process high-resolution and large-scale remote sensing images. In this work, a novel patch-wise semantic segmentation method with a new training strategy based on fully convolutional networks is presented to segment common land resources. First, to handle the high-resolution image, the images are split as local patches and then a patch-wise network is built. Second, training data is preprocessed in several ways to meet the specific characteristics of remote sensing images, i.e., color imbalance, object rotation variations and lens distortion. Third, a multi-scale training strategy is developed to solve the severe scale variation problem. In addition, the impact of conditional random field (CRF) is studied to improve the precision. The proposed method was evaluated on a dataset collected from a capital city in West China with the Gaofen-2 satellite. The dataset contains ten common land resources (Grassland, Road, etc.). The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves 54.96% in terms of mean intersection over union (MIoU) and outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in remote sensing image segmentation.

Benchmark datasets are essential for developing and evaluating remote sensing image retrieval (RSIR) approaches. However, most of the existing datasets are single-labeled, with each image in these datasets being annotated by a single label representing the most significant semantic content of the image. This is sufficient for simple problems, such as distinguishing between a building and a beach, but multiple labels and sometimes even dense (pixel) labels are required for more complex problems, such as RSIR and semantic segmentation. We therefore extended the existing multi-labeled dataset collected for multi-label RSIR and presented a dense labeling remote sensing dataset termed "DLRSD". DLRSD contained a total of 17 classes, and the pixels of each image were assigned with 17 pre-defined labels. We used DLRSD to evaluate the performance of RSIR methods ranging from traditional handcrafted feature-based methods to deep learning-based ones. More specifically, we evaluated the performances of RSIR methods from both single-label and multi-label perspectives. These results demonstrated the advantages of multiple labels over single labels for interpreting complex remote sensing images. DLRSD provided the literature a benchmark for RSIR and other pixel-based problems such as semantic segmentation.

Given the influences of illumination, imaging angle, and geometric distortion, among others, false matching points still occur in all image registration algorithms. Therefore, false matching points detection is an important step in remote sensing image registration. Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) is typically used to detect false matching points. However, RANSAC method cannot detect all false matching points in some remote sensing images. Therefore, a robust false matching points detection method based on Knearest- neighbour (K-NN) graph (KGD) is proposed in this method to obtain robust and high accuracy result. The KGD method starts with the construction of the K-NN graph in one image. K-NN graph can be first generated for each matching points and its K nearest matching points. Local transformation model for each matching point is then obtained by using its K nearest matching points. The error of each matching point is computed by using its transformation model. Last, L matching points with largest error are identified false matching points and removed. This process is iterative until all errors are smaller than the given threshold. In addition, KGD method can be used in combination with other methods, such as RANSAC. Several remote sensing images with different resolutions and terrains are used in the experiment. We evaluate the performance of KGD method, RANSAC + KGD method, RANSAC, and Graph Transformation Matching (GTM). The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the KGD and RANSAC + KGD methods.

Over the last decade, remote sensing technology has advanced dramatically, resulting in significant improvements on image quality, data volume, and application usage. These images have essential applications since they can help with quick and easy interpretation. Many standard detection algorithms fail to accurately categorize a scene from a remote sensing image recorded from the earth. A method that uses bilinear convolution neural networks to produce a lessweighted set of models those results in better visual recognition in remote sensing images using fine-grained techniques. This proposed hybrid method is utilized to extract scene feature information in two times from remote sensing images for improved recognition. In layman's terms, these features are defined as raw, and only have a single defined frame, so they will allow basic recognition from remote sensing images. This research work has proposed a double feature extraction hybrid deep learning approach to classify remotely sensed image scenes based on feature abstraction techniques. Also, the proposed algorithm is applied to feature values in order to convert them to feature vectors that have pure black and white values after many product operations. The next stage is pooling and normalization, which occurs after the CNN feature extraction process has changed. This research work has developed a novel hybrid framework method that has a better level of accuracy and recognition rate than any prior model.

Sea-land segmentation based on edge detection is commonly utilized in ship detection, coastline extraction, and satellite system applications due to its high accuracy and rapid speed. Pixel-level distribution statistics do not currently satisfy the requirements for high-resolution, large-scale remote sensing image processing. To address the above problem, in this paper, we propose a high-throughput hardware architecture for sea-land segmentation based on multi-dimensional parallel characteristics. The proposed architecture is well suited to wide remote sensing images. Efficient multi-dimensional block level statistics allow for relatively infrequent pixel-level memory access; a boundary block tracking process replaces the whole-image scanning process, markedly enhancing efficiency. The tracking efficiency is further improved by a convenient two-step scanning strategy that feeds back the path state in a timely manner for a large number of blocks in the same direction appearing in the algorithm. The proposed architecture was deployed on Xilinx Virtex k7-410t to find that its practical processing time for a [Formula: see text] remote sensing image is only about 0.4[Formula: see text]s. The peak performance is 1.625[Formula: see text]gbps, which is higher than other FPGA implementations of segmentation algorithms. The proposed structure is highly competitive in processing wide remote sensing images.
