Based on tradition and high standards, Swiss higher education in tourism and hospitality is ranked among the best in the world. Although scientific research is the foundation of a country’s higher education system, the Swiss Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Management Scientific Research (Swiss TL&HM-SR) has not yet been subject to a systematic analysis. This paper aims to fill this gap by assessing the Swiss TL&HM-SR performance, as well as identifying and discussing its most prominent topics. To this end, bibliometric data were gathered from the Scopus database and analyzed through a bibliometric mixed-method approach. Results provide a new performance indicator for the Swiss TL&HM-SR in this field of research, and show that innovation and sustainable destination management are particularly prominent topics within Swiss TL&HM-SR. In this context, contributions to these topics in particular are discussed in more detail. The findings provide useful insights for stakeholders aiming to improve sustainability performance through strategic management of destinations, as well as for researchers aiming to follow the latest trends, identify emerging topics and formulate more attractive projects for financing institutions. The study also provides a new and innovative methodological contribution, as it combines different methods of scientific research performance assessment, which can be further employed in other countries or knowledge areas.

Abstract. Although the development of research competency is an important goal of higher education in social sciences, instruments to measure this outcome often depend on the students’ self-ratings. To provide empirical evidence for the utility of a newly developed instrument for the objective measurement of social-scientific research competency, two validation studies across two independent samples were conducted. Study 1 ( n = 675) provided evidence for unidimensionality, expected differences in test scores between differently advanced groups of students as well as incremental validities over and above self-perceived research self-efficacy. In Study 2 ( n = 82) it was demonstrated that the competency measured indeed is social-scientific and relations to facets of fluid and crystallized intelligence were analyzed. Overall, the results indicate that the test scores reflected a trainable, social-scientific, knowledge-related construct relevant to research performance. These are promising results for the application of the instrument in the evaluation of research education courses in higher education.

The education system is forever changing, with the purpose of improving young people’s chances of employment, supplying the market with sufficient quantities of competitive, skilled workers of quality [Zsarnoczky, 2015]. This is especially true for the field of tourism and hospitality, for this industry has become one of the most dynamically growing segments of today’s economy, in quantitative terms [Forgács and Loboda, 2003]. In order to make it an important part of the national economy, the quality of innovative training and ensuring that there will be new generations of professionals is just as important as making use of natural resources and advantages and innovative training gives us opportunity to teach and prepare tourism experts and they are trained for finding new prospects of tourism. The aims of this research paper are to explore the actual effect of innovative training in tourism education and hospitality, to investigate current quality of teaching tourism as a subject in higher education system: colleges, institutions and universities of Uzbekistan and analyze the importance of innovative training in tourism education and developing hospitality prospects in Uzbekistan.

To promote research excellence, China’s government has been offering substantial financial support for a small group of selected universities through three national research programs (i.e., Project 211, Project 985, Double First Class). However, admission to these programs is not merit-based; based on a statistical analysis of Chinese universities’ scientific activities, this paper shows that this institutionalized hierarchy is not supported by empirical data on research performance, which contributes to inequalities and inefficiencies in Chinese higher education. To build and maintain research capacity, China must support meritocracy across the research system.

As universities compete for resources, research output has become more important and the key determinant in academic success. While much work has been done, it is limited to studying specific dimensions of research performance, with inherent methodological limitations such as the choice of journals to be included for examination, methods of counting, and research performance measures. This study takes a different route. Based on a constructivist grounded theory methodology, it explores the question of how to conduct good research across the entire spectrum of tenure positions, by interviewing 36 academics from six academic institutions in Hong Kong. This yielded a theory-based emerging framework, which suggests good habits and routine behaviors are essential in conducting good research. Consistent with the “grit” concept in positive psychology, in addition to “consistency of interest”, “perseverance of efforts” is important. Five habits of good research are identified, namely being curious, observant, tenacious, mindful, and practical. Using Hong Kong as the context, this study confirms the importance of conducting good academic research and making a contribution to education, industry, and society. Although the results break no new ground, the findings would be beneficial to academics, particularly young and aspiring academics as well as doctoral students. This is also reinforced by the importance of hard work and perseverance in order to achieve success.

The Botswana higher education system has been producing low-quality unemployable graduates and the low levels of learner motivation is believed to be a major factor. Premised on the Self-Determination Theory, the purpose of this study was to explore the nexus between pedagogical strategies and motivation of hospitality management learners in a selected higher education institution in Botswana. A descriptive survey design was adopted while the quantitative methodology was employed. Descriptive and inferential statistics such as the mean, standard deviation, correlation and regression, which were products of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software, were used to analyse data that was collected from 128 respondents who were selected from a population of 189 learners using stratified random sampling. This study provided empirical evidence on the influence of pedagogical strategies on learner motivation and will provide instructors with knowledge of pedagogical approaches that either facilitate or impede learner motivation. The findings of the study revealed a significant relationship between pedagogical strategies and learner motivation. However, it was discovered that certain pedagogical strategies employed by the instructors had a negative effect on learner motivation namely low quality of academic advising, not affording learners enough opportunities to do presentations in class and failure to effectively inculcate collaborative skills among learners. It is recommended that learners should be afforded opportunities for collaborative learning to stimulate peer engagement which facilitate motivation. The institution should ensure that the curriculum incorporates contemporary issues that are relevant to the learners, industry and society as this will instil in the learners a reason to want to learn with the assurance of ready employment after graduation.

The article covers a number of issues related to the problem of the specialist-professional formation in the system of higher education of Ukraine, taking into account global challenges and prospects for the development of the world economy, national economies and modern society. In the process of scientific research, an understanding of the basic concepts of «profession», «vocational training», «formation of a specialist-professional», «IHE activity» has been formed. The role and significance of higher education in professional training of specialists, competitive in the labour market are revealed; the priority directions of development of the industry are singled out in accordance with the state educational policy requirements and the Bologna process tasks in the conditions of the European Higher Education Area formation and the integration implementation. The article pays particular attention to analysing the models of national strategies for the higher education development and selecting the model of the Ukrainian universities development strategy on the path to their promotion to world rankings, referring to the experience of autonomy, mission, results of activity and achievements of European and world universities. Consequently the research analyses of the educational institutions network during the years of Ukraine's independence, taking into account external destabilizing factors; gives the characteristic of the local IHEs’ activity, including universities, during the period of reforming and modernizing the higher education system according to European standards and time requirements; determines the new approaches and directions of the IHE's activity improvement in the field of training qualified specialists for the industrial and social spheres. Moreover the article reveals the features of key trends for the modern education sphere, among them there is a globalization, the factor of ICT, the growth of non-system education, individualization and personalization of educational trajectories. It also gives the characteristic features of a competitive specialist-professional who is able to function effectively in the modern labour market. The benefits of this study are: the defined forms of the educational process organization at IHE in accordance with the Law of Ukraine «On Higher Education»; the given classification of innovative teaching methods for realizing of the educational process participants’ abilities and talents, basing on the study of scientific and methodological literature; the determined new approaches and directions of the IHE's activity improvement in relation to the training of qualified specialists for the industrial and social spheres. On this basis, the training of competent specialist-professionals should be considered as one of the priority areas of scientific research with the definition of long-term educational strategies, including goals, tasks, scientific approaches, positions, directions and ways of their implementation in the higher education system. In the search process, the methods of theoretical research and practical implementation of this problem are used, in particular: analysis and generalization of scientific approaches and ways for improving the professionals formation process in the higher education system; international experience synthesis and comparison, normative legal acts and peculiarities of the IHE work in the professional staff training; induction and deduction when disclosing forms and methods of future specialists’ educational activity, gaining their professional qualities and characteristics.

This paper aimed to evaluate the Portuguese scientific production within Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Management (TLHM). To this end, 572 papers from 51 peer-reviewed Scopus journals were mapped through a mixed bibliometric analysis method. The results indicated that Portugal has a significant TLHM research production, with an outstanding performance in terms of topic prominence percentile. Additionally, Portuguese TLHM research collaboration has increased significantly in recent years. It should be pointed out, however, that this production is significantly skewed towards tourism-specific studies rather than hospitality. This study presents a new bibliometric contribution by bringing the SciVal topic prominence and prominence percentile to the TLHM field and presenting a new country research performance model, indicating a new way to evaluate a country’s research performance. Additionally, this investigation featuring the overall structure of Portuguese TLHM research provides clear outlines to concerned bodies regarding researcher and institution performance and gives helpful and timely information to researchers, scholars, government managers, industry managers, and tourism and hospitality consultants.
