The existence of external two-fold pressure regarding competitiveness and sustainable development in a capital-intensive industry supports the need for sustainable performance. However, endeavors to create a sustainable framework to measure the performance of the oil and gas (O&G) industry are mostly devoted to the production and supply chain of petrochemical products and rarely focus on a maintenance perspective. Motivated by such scarcity, the goal of this research was to discuss and articulate the performance assessment framework by integrating concepts of maintenance and sustainability in the O&G industry. This study proposed the use of a range of performance measures for assessing sustainability on offshore production and drilling platforms. The conceptual framework consists of four aspects of sustainability categorized into technical, environmental, social, and economic dimensions. Each measure was assigned according to its relevance at the strategic, tactical, and functional levels of maintenance decision making. The conceptual framework resulted in hierarchical clusters of twelve strategic indicators. These indicators consist of conventional measures as well as new ones relating to the safety and reliability on offshore platforms. The potential contribution of the present study is found in its intention to empower a better understanding of sustainable maintenance and encourage those making decisions about practical implementation within the O&G industry. This paper culminates with directions for future studies.

Abstract This paper presents a novel approach to finding solutions to unsafe work practices in oil and gas environments—from manufacturing facilities to offshore platforms. The ‘Center of Excellence’ approach is a stepwise process for classifying safety events and harnessing data to reduce incidents during offshore oil and gas E&P activities. The approach includes identifying focus topics related to unsafe practices, forming cross-functional teams with significant field or impacted personnel participation, developing and implementing measures, utilizing the hierarchy of controls to mitigate the issue, and raising company-wide awareness through training and targeted information campaigns. The Center of Excellence process gives top priority to those activities in order to reduce the highest severity and most frequent safety incidents. The teams are then able to more clearly identify feasible solutions, including engineering controls, training, campaigns, and procedures to contain the hazards. The active engagement and involvement of frontline employees who either work in the field or on the factory floor is critical to understand the daily hazards of their work activities and the success of the Center of Excellence approach. With these employees acting as a champion of the developed solution, other workers are more likely to accept and adopt it in their daily routine. This paper reviews practical examples of how the Center of Excellence approach has led to safer practices in the workplace. Examples include improved safety measures for using tightening tools, which led to more than 50% reduction in hand injuries and other safety incidents. A recent example of using the approach to develop safer practices during manual handling of loads (MHL) is also presented. The examples highlight the benefits of bringing multifaceted teams and multiple industry-accepted safety concepts together to resolve common work safety challenges, which can serve as a blueprint for oil and gas companies to reduce incidents across their enterprise.

Abstract Deepwater activities are the future of the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry. Huge reserves have been located in the Gulf of Mexico as well as off the Coast of West Africa and Brazil. The development of floating production platforms and vessels offers challenges to the facilities engineer who must consider new materials to meet stringent topsides weight limitations. A critical technology for facilities piping in offshore platforms is joining technique. This paper discusses the development of a hybrid joining approach by using heat-activated coupling and adhesive bonding. The technique procedure is presented via specimen fabrication. A total of eleven coupled specimens are prepared and evaluated using standardized internal pressure tests. The feasibility of this new joining technique in offshore piping is discussed based on the internal pressure test results.

Damage detection based on changes in dynamic characteristics is considered for eight-legged k-braced steel offshore oil and gas production towers. Both experimental and analytical results are presented to improve damage detection capabilities. A 1/50th scale plastic model representing the structural system of a typical full-scale tower in 218 ft (66m) of water is used for the studies. Effects of severance of diagonal bracing members on selected vibration frequencies and mode shape parameters measurable at the deck are investigated. The effects of changes in deck mass, increase in jacket mass, and deck mass eccentricity on the selected parameters are also investigated and are shown to be different from the effects of damage.

This article provides a roadmap for possible European Union (eu) action in the protection of marine biodiversity in the changing Arctic. First the eu’s competence in the Arctic is briefly introduced. Then the discussion turns to the eu’s potential external and internal actions in shipping, fisheries and offshore oil and gas operations that could possibly enhance the international legal regime for the protection of marine biodiversity in the Arctic. The eu’s role vis-à-vis the global biodiversity regime and cross-cutting measures under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea are discussed together in the final part.

The contribution of research towards innovation and growth in ocean-related activities over past centuries is explored through a number of case studies. This historic view is amplified by some of the author's own experiences relating to the more recent development of offshore oil and gas resources. Some implications from recent and current research programmes and scientific experiments are reviewed in an attempt to identify possible pointers towards future changes and developments in ocean-going operations. The paper examines the motivation, organization and shaping of some current research activities, and concludes with some suggestions directed towards enhancing the national research effort and its potential contribution towards economic and responsible development of the oceans.

In the scientific study, the offshore oil and gas production platforms were considered after the exhaustion of hydrocarbon reserves. An alternative to dismantling is the possibility of  refitting and retrofitting prospective structures for the function of energy production. The  general problem of determining the climatic offshore oil and gas fields is also considered. For the development of maritime infrastructure, a design development was added to  complement the functionality of offshore platforms for energy production. The chosen methods for developing.The subject of the study: the subject of the study are offshore oil and gas production platforms, marine power plants for power generation and bioenergy objects.Objectives: the purpose of the study is to identify options for the use of offshore hydraulic installations in marine offshore platforms for generating energy and locating bioenergetic facilities.Materials and methods: in the course of the work, various options for the use of offshore platforms in the field of renewable energy sources are considered, without the need for disposal of objects.Results: as a result of the work, the project of the experimental energy complex of bioreactor and biocultivator EECBB and RES.Conclusions: the energy sector has the opportunity to be environmentally friendly and rely on the principles of sustainable development.

With the development of the offshore oil and gas fields, more and more offshore oil and gas fields are found to have high carbon dioxide. In addition, as peaking carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality were written into the government work report for the first time, the correct separation and emission of CO2 have become a key issue that needs to be solved by offshore oil and gas fields. In this paper, we studied two CO2 separation methods suitable for offshore platforms and the current status of CO2 offshore storage and application. Moreover, the development of offshore carbon dioxide storage application was investigated in detail, and the technical characteristics and application prospects of CO2-EOR and CO2 replacing combustible ice were analysed and discussed. This paper analyses the challenges and countermeasures of offshore CO2 storage from many aspects. It provides a theoretical reference for future CO2 treatment in offshore oil and gas fields.

This study puts forward the implementation of Multi-Criteria Decision Aid, through the PROMÉTHÉE V method, to support a decision on prioritizing a modification project portfolio on offshore oil and gas platforms. The chosen method supports, in a structured manner, the prioritization of a project portfolio which is necessary to leverage the oil production in offshore facilities, especially when they have already surpassed the plateau phase and presents production decline. Although the most relevant issues for investors are related to return on investments and the risks involved, the study suggests that other criteria are considered in specific settings. The research used data from 12 main projects of an oil and gas company and the criteria evaluations were made based on documents retrieved from the organization's database. This implementation represents a very important improvement for a well-known problem, in which the result is found based on criteria and their respective weights selected through a consensus. The results reinforce that any organization, with a constraint similar to the one presented in this study, may obtain relevant gains with the use of methods that clearly reflect the decision process and its criteria, assisting the decision maker's job significantly.

Safety and reliability factors, assumed in Russian and international standards, as well as the main provisions of design of offshore oil and gas structures are considered in the article. The reasons for structures destruction are classified. The analysis showed that the main design provisions and methodology of calculations related to provision of safe and reliable operation of offshore oil and gas structures by different standards are not fundamentally different: the required degree of reliability of the structure is set depending on the social and economic consequences of possible hydrodynamic accidents; calculations are based on the limit states design method using partial safety factors; etc. However, the factors accounting the degree of the structure reliability, partial safety coefficients and load combinations coefficients differ in different standards and methodologies.
