Induced chirality (achiral target in chiral matrix such as proteins) sometimes play a useful role in evaluating supramolecular systems involving biomolecules. Enzymatic fuel cells, which generate electricity via enzymatic redox reactions at electrodes hold a significant potential for sustainable power. Bacterial laccase, a multi-copper oxidase, was used in the cathodic compartment of the enzymatic biofuel cells because of its low redox potential. Three new salen Cu(II) complexes were designed and investigated as mediators. The Schiff base ligands consisted of both a redox-active (anthraquinone) and a photochromic (azobenzene) moiety. The interaction between laccase and a mediator was examined with induced circular dichroism (CD) and the docking tool to observe in which of the laccase domains the mediators bind as well as study the photo-induced tuning of both the cis-trans photoisomerization and orientation by the Weigert effect. Both the electrochemical and photochromic properties are also discussed and compared using density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent (TD)-DFT, and docking simulations.

The(3R,4R,6R)-3-(((E)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)amino)-6-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2,4,5-triol water-soluble Glucose amine Schiff base (GASB-1) product was made available by condensation of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde with (3R,6R)-3-amino-6-(hydroxymethyl)-tetra-hydro-2H-pyran-2,4,5-triol under mono-mode microwave heating. A one-pot 5-minute microwave-assisted reaction was required to complete the condensation reaction with 90% yield and without having byproducts. The 3D structure of GASB-1 was solved from single crystal X-ray diffraction data and computed by DFT/6-311G(d,p). The Hirshfeld surface analysis (HSA), molecular electronic potential (MEP), Mulliken atomic charge (MAC), and natural population analysis (NPA) were performed. The IR and UV-Vis spectra were matched to their density functional theory (DFT) relatives and the thermal behavior was resolved in an open-room condition via thermogravimetry/Derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO/LUMO), density of state (DOS), and time-dependence TD-DFT computations were correlated to the experimental electron transfer in water and acrylonitrile solvents.

A new inorganic molecule [ Co(Hbim) ( C 6 H 4 O 2)( NH 3)2]2 that can be used as a new optically durable molecular switch was theoretically designed in the framework of density functional theory. Three stable minima, belonging to 1 A g , 5 A 1, and 9 A g states, were found in the complex. Theoretically predicted infrared spectra of the complexes showed that a strong peak of NH stretching vibration is observed at 2690, 2120, and 2770 cm -1 in the 1 A g , 5 A 1, and 9 A g states, respectively. The apparent red shift of the NH stretching vibration band in the 5 A 1 state make it possible to distinguish the electronic state from others (1 A g and 9 A g ). This means that the complex can be used as a molecular level switch whose memory can be stably read by IR light without any photoreaction process; namely, without memory degradation.
