Power electronics-based apparatuses absorb non-sinusoidal currents. These are considered non-linear and non-symmetrical loads for the power grid, and they generate a harmonic current. The dynamic tuning passive filter (DTPF) is one of the best solutions for improving power quality and filtering out harmonic currents to get a symmetrical current waveform. The electrical parameters of DTPF can influence its absorbing harmonic current, tuning performance, and cost. In this paper, a method for designing and optimizing the electrical parameters of dynamic tuning passive filter is proposed in order to improve the effectiveness of DTPF and the symmetry level of the power source. First, according to the characteristics of the harmonic source, the design technical indicators of DTPF, and its topology, the design procedure for the electrical parameters of DTPF is proposed. Second, based on detailed analysis of the test results, the range of the harmonic current absorption coefficient is determined. Third, the range of the relationship coefficient is determined by analyzing the impact of the filter capacitor’s capacity on the filter performance. Fourth, the calculation method for the electrical parameters of DTPF is devised. Finally, the validity of this method is verified by several engineering cases, and the electrical parameters of the filter capacitor and electromagnetic coupling reactance converter (ECRC) under the lowest total cost are simulated and optimized. Our approach can optimize the electrical parameters of DTPF and improve the harmonic suppression effectiveness, thus leading to a more symmetrical waveform and successfully avoiding power grid problems. The research results of this study not only provide a basis for the design of ECRC, but also lay a foundation for the machining DTPF.

Harmonic current in power grid will cause extra power consumption of electrical equipment and affect the stable operation of power grid. Based on the dynamic model experiment system of 10kV distribution network, a working platform for parallel operation of charging pile was built, which studied the harmonic current components and analyzed the simulation waveform. The results show that with the increase of number of charging piles, the content of harmonic current will decrease correspondingly, the main components are low frequency odd harmonics; When 16 charging piles are connected in parallel, three harmonics are the main components; the waveform of the simulation calculation curve and the actual measurement curve are basically consistent, and the current amplitude of each frequency harmonic wave is basically the same , so it is proved that the dynamic model test platform is reasonable and feasible to test grid’s harmonic current. The dynamic model can provide technical support for harmonic suppression research.

For resolving the problem that power filter cannot work normally because TCR (thyristor controlled reactor) generates extra third harmonic current under asymmetrical voltage, the paper proposes the estimation method of current capacity that TCR generates extra third harmonic current under asymmetrical voltage. Considering extra third harmonic current under asymmetrical voltage, Optimum method based on genetic algorithm is used to design the parameters of power filter. With reactive power compensation and harmonic suppression project of a steel mill as example, the proposed method is simulated by Matlab. Simulation results show optimized power filter can eliminate extra third harmonic current effects under asymmetrical voltage, meet the requirement of reactive power compensation, reduce harmonics current that load injects into system, and guarantee the power filter safe operation under asymmetrical voltage.

It has been demonstrated that adding a few percent of nanoscale reinforcements, leads to remarkable improvement in mechanical properties of the polymers such as stiffness, damping, and energy absorption. These lightweight materials are attractive substitutes for the heavy metallic structural parts in the automotive, military, aerospace and many other industries. However, due to complexity of these multiphase materials, accurate modeling of their behavior in real loading cases is still ambiguous. The impact simulation is a vital step in design procedure of a vehicle, where a strain rate-dependent model of its components is required. In this paper, an elasto-viscoplastic modeling procedure of the polymer-based nanocomposites, assuming the elastic behavior of the nano-phase is presented; whereas the polymeric matrix deformation is dependent to the loading rate and is characterized by the method of Genetic algorithm optimization-based fitting to the experimental observations. By introducing a modified Halpin-Tsai method, the nanocomposite is then modeled as a homogenized material where the modification algorithm is the main challenge. A combination of approaches including parametric analysis, central composite design of experiments and response surface method is proposed to modify the tangent modulus of the polymeric matrix to be passed as the input to the Halpin-Tsai equations. Finally, the procedure is implemented to a set of epoxy-GNP nanocomposites under unidirectional compressive loads with different rates and the stress-strain curves are predicted with a decent precision.

The operation and the development of power system networks introduce new types of stability problems. The effect of the power generation and consumption on the frequency of the power system can be described as a demand/generation imbalance resulting from a sudden increase/decrease in the demand and/or generation. This paper investigates the impact of a loss of generation on the transient behaviour of the power grid frequency. A simplified power system model is proposed to examine the impact of change of the main generation system parameters (system inertia, governor droop setting, load damping constant, and the high-pressure steam turbine power fraction), on the primary frequency response in responding to the disturbance of a 1.32 GW generation loss on the UK power grid. Various rates of primary frequency responses are simulated via adjusting system parameters of the synchronous generators to enable the controlled generators providing a fast-reliable primary frequency response within 10 s after a loss of generation. It is concluded that a generation system inertia and a governor droop setting are the most dominant parameters that effect the system frequency response after a loss of generation. Therefore, for different levels of generation loss, the recovery rate will be dependent on the changes of the governor droop setting values. The proposed model offers a fundamental basis for a further investigation to be carried on how a power system will react during a secondary frequency response.

With the growing market of Electric Vehicles (EV), the procurement of their charging infrastructure plays a crucial role in their adoption. Within the revolution of Internet of Things, the EV charging infrastructure is getting on board with the introduction of smart Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS), a myriad set of communication protocols, and different entities. We provide in this article an overview of this infrastructure detailing the participating entities and the communication protocols. Further, we contextualize the current deployment of EVCSs through the use of available public data. In the light of such a survey, we identify two key concerns, the lack of standardization and multiple points of failures, which renders the current deployment of EV charging infrastructure vulnerable to an array of different attacks. Moreover, we propose a novel attack scenario that exploits the unique characteristics of the EVCSs and their protocol (such as high power wattage and support for reverse power flow) to cause disturbances to the power grid. We investigate three different attack variations; sudden surge in power demand, sudden surge in power supply, and a switching attack. To support our claims, we showcase using a real-world example how an adversary can compromise an EVCS and create a traffic bottleneck by tampering with the charging schedules of EVs. Further, we perform a simulation-based study of the impact of our proposed attack variations on the WSCC 9 bus system. Our simulations show that an adversary can cause devastating effects on the power grid, which might result in blackout and cascading failure by comprising a small number of EVCSs.

Considering that the charging behaviors of users of electric vehicles (EVs) (including charging time and charging location) are random and uncertain and that the disorderly charging of EVs brings new challenges to the power grid, this paper proposes an optimal electricity pricing strategy for EVs based on region division and time division. Firstly, by comparing the number of EVs and charging stations in different districts of a city, the demand ratio of charging stations per unit is calculated. Secondly, according to the demand price function and the principle of profit maximization, the charging price between different districts of a city is optimized to guide users to charge in districts with more abundant charging stations. Then, based on the results of the zonal pricing strategy, the time-of-use (TOU) pricing strategy in different districts is discussed. In the TOU pricing model, consumer satisfaction, the profit of power grid enterprises, and the load variance of the power grid are considered comprehensively. Taking the optimization of the comprehensive index as the objective function, the TOU pricing optimization model of EVs is constructed. Finally, the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is introduced to solve the above optimization problems. The specific data of EVs in a municipality directly under the Central Government are taken as examples for this analysis. The empirical results demonstrate that the peak-to-valley ratio of a certain day in the city is reduced from 56.8% to 43% by using the optimal pricing strategy, which further smooth the load curve and alleviates the impact of load fluctuation. To a certain extent, the problem caused by the uneven distribution of electric vehicles and charging stations has been optimized. An orderly and reasonable electricity pricing strategy can guide users to adjust charging habits, to ensure grid security, and to ensure the economic benefits of all parties.
