Agricultural management practices are responsible for almost two-thirds of the variations in potato tuber yield. In order to answer the research question about the remaining variability of the tuber yield, we hypothesized that climate extremes partly explain the missing component of variations of the tuber yield. Therefore, this research attempts to bridge this knowledge gap in order to generate a knowledge base for future strategies. A climate extreme dataset of the Prince Edward Island (PEI) was computed by averaging the data of five meteorological stations. In detail, changing patterns of 20 climate extreme indices were computed with ClimPACT2 software for 30 years (1989-2018) data of PEI. Statistical significance of the trends and their slope values were determined with the Mann-Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimates, respectively. Average of daily mean temperature (TMm), mean daily minimum temperature (TNm) and the occurrence of continuous dry days (CDD), significantly increased by 0.77 °C, 1.17 °C and 3.33 days., respectively, during the potato growing seasons (May-October) of the past three decades. For this period daily temperature range (DTR), frost days (FD), cold days (TX10p), cold nights (TN10p) and warmest days (TXx) showed decreasing trends of −1.01 °C, −3.75 days, −5.67 days, −11.40 nights, and −2.00 days, respectively. The principal component analysis showed that DTR, TXx, CDD, and TNm were the main factors affecting seasonal variations of tuber yield. The multiple regression model attributed ~39% of tuber yield variance to DTR, TXx, CDD, and TNm. However, these indices explained individually 21%, 19%, 16%, and 4% variation to the tuber yield, respectively. The remaining variation in the tuber yield explained by other yield affecting factors. The information generated from this study can be used for future planning about agricultural management strategies in the Island, for example, the provision of water resources for supplemental irrigation of crops during dry months.

AbstractFourteen species of Carabidae are added to Prince Edward Island’s (P.E.I.) faunal list, bringing the known fauna to 167 species. Bembidion nitidum (Kirby) and Bembidion obtusum Audinet-Serville are newly recorded for the Maritime Provinces. Six species are removed from P.E.I.’s faunal list. The history of collecting of Carabidae on P.E.I. is briefly recounted. Despite differences in land area and distance from the mainland between P.E.I., Cape Breton Island, and insular Newfoundland, their carabid faunas exhibit many similarities in size and composition. The native carabid fauna of P.E.I. comprises 49% of the species in the combined Maritime Provinces fauna, perhaps reflecting an island-related diminution of species diversity. The proportion of flightless species on P.E.I. (4.9%) is less than that in the Maritime Provinces as a whole (7.1%), an apparent indication that the Northumberland Strait has been a barrier to colonization. Twenty-seven introduced species are found on P.E.I., 26 of which can be classified as synanthropic and may have originated in dry-ballast quarries in southwestern England. Although the earliest dates of detection of many introduced species on P.E.I. are substantially later than elsewhere in the Maritimes, this reflects the paucity of early collecting. Land-management practices on P.E.I. (large-scale and early forest clearances, intensive agriculture, and the extensive use of biocides) may have had an impact on P.E.I.’s carabid fauna.

Abstract. Sustainable flood risk management (SFRM) has become popular since the 1980s. Many governmental and non-governmental organisations have been keen on implementing the SFRM strategies by integrating social, ecological and economic themes into their flood risk management (FRM) practices. However, justifications for SFRM are still embryonic and it is not yet clear whether this concept is influencing the current policies in different countries. This paper reviews the past and present flood management approaches and experiences from flood defence to FRM in four developed countries with the aim of highlighting lessons for developing mega deltas. The paper explored recent strategies such as “Making Space for Water, PPS 25, and NPPF” in the UK; “Room for Rivers” in the Netherlands which was promoted to cope with flooding, integrate FRM with ideas on sustainability, and deliver good FRM practice for next generations. The United States has also established a sound National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and Japan has developed an advanced flood warning and evacuation contingency system to prepare for climatic extremes. These case studies showed some good lessons to achieve long term SFRM direction to deliver flood management practices with social-economic and environmental concerns. Most of developing coastal megacities especially in Asia are still heavily reliant on traditional hard-engineering approach, that may not be enough to mitigate substantial risks due to human (exist huge populations, rapid socio-economic growth, subsidence) and natural (climate change) factors. We understand different countries and cities have their own interpretation on SFRM, but recommend policy makers to adopt “mixed options” towards thinking about long term and sustainability that with social, economic and environmental considerations.

The beetle families of the Bostrichiformia—the Derodontidae, Dermestidae, Bostrichidae, and Anobiidae – in the Maritime Provinces of Canada are surveyed. Seventy-four native and established introduced species are now known to occur including 30 found in New Brunswick, 65 in Nova Scotia, and 29 on Prince Edward Island. Seven species are newly recorded from New Brunswick, 24 from Prince Edward Island, and 37 from Nova Scotia for a total of 68 new provincial records. A total of 31 species are newly recorded in the Maritime Provinces as a whole, three of which, Dinoderus minutus (Fabricius), Ernobius filicornis LeConte, and Ernobius granulatus LeConte, are newly recorded in Canada. Two species, Ptilinus pruinosus Casey and Caenocara oculata (Say), are removed from the faunal list of New Brunswick, and one subspecies, Attagenus unicolor unicolor (Brahm), is removed from the faunal list of Prince Edward Island since no specimens or published records could be found to support their presence.        Additional records of six other exotic species intercepted at ports and points in the region, but not established here, are also reported. A specimen of the Palearctic Ptinus bicinctus Sturm collected in 1915 in Nova Scotia, establishes a new early timeline for this species in North America. The fauna of the region is distinguished by the very large proportion (37 of 74 species, i.e. 50%) of which is introduced. It is also distinguished by the large proportion (22 of 37 species, i.e. 60%) of the indigenous, native fauna that is apparently rare, perhaps as a result of the historical impact of forest management practices on these wood-boring, saproxylic species. The fauna is further evaluated from both zoogeographic and ecological perspectives.

Recent years have seen a small but consistent growth in the use of AI on commercial pig farms in Britain. Currently about 12 percent of all matings are artificial and 25 percent or more of farms are using some AI.(6) This figure still falls well short of our continental neighbours, with Denmark and the Netherlands inseminating 50 percent of their sows. The conception rate and litter size achievable with AI (6) can at least equal results from natural matings. However, it is recognised that some people achieve far superior fertility results to others when using AI. Part of this is due to different genotypes employed (e.g. purebreds vs crossbreds), different production systems and management practices imposed. It is most likely, however, that an unquantified but substantial part of the reason for such big differences between farms in fertility following AI is due to differing abilities of stockpeople performing the inseminations. “Ability’ refers not only to the actual insemination technique, which is straightforward and can be quickly learned, but to their general ability to recognise behavioural changes in their stock, to interact with their stock and generally get the best out of their stock i.e. their level of stockmanship skills.

The paper describes findings from an interview study about intellectual property management practices in inter-organisational relationships. A total of 40 companies and public organisations in Finland and in the Netherlands were studied using semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The organisations represented different sizes and fields of industry. About 90% of the interviewed companies collaborated in their innovation efforts. However, the companies generally mentioned that the management of intellectual property and knowledge is very challenging when other actors are involved in parts of the innovation development process. Confidentiality agreements are typically used to ensure knowledge protection in these relationships. Patenting is important for about half of the companies, but joint patenting is not a common practice. Companies in Finland and in the Netherlands are seen to behave very similarly with regards to the collaboration activities and intellectual property (IP) management in these relationships.
