AbstractAdequate integrated management of potato leaf diseases can have an influence on pathogens which are challenging to control and cause main potato tuber diseases. Deriving from this hypothesis, an experiment was designed to evaluate the efficacy of foliar application of twelve fungicides on late blight in tubers, common scab, black scurf and silver scurf. In the period of 2013 to 2017, the fungicides were equally applied six times in registered doses during the growing seasons. Eight tuber disease indicators and eight yield characteristics were then evaluated in harvested tuber samples. Significant differences were found among the fungicides used. In comparison to the negative control (n. c.), the application of Infinito, Ranman Top and Revus Top reduced the quantity of tubers infected by late blight by 72% on average. The incidence of common scab increased by 65% of n. c. under the effect of copper oxychloride, while an average reduction by 19% of n. c. was observed with the use of Acrobat MZ WG, Curzate Gold and Consento. The occurrence of silver scurf was significantly enhanced by Curzate Gold and Consento (105% of n. c.), while it was suppressed by Revus Top and Revus (85% of n. c.). All fungicides were ineffective on black scurf yet had a positive influence on the potato yield and quality, with the choice of fungicide having a great impact on the quality of tubers. The application of any safe fungicide is important, especially in years similar to 2015, which was the most devastating recent year for potato production in terms of structural changes in yield of tubers.

The physical attributes of agricultural product are utmost essential in developing technologies for different unit operations. Pertinent potato tuber attributes were studied. 100 samples of dominant and popular potato tuber varieties grown in Ethiopia which are free from any injuries from each variety were obtained from Holeta Agricultural Research Center. In this study, the physical attributes of potato tubers were determined at a moisture content of 70.75, 69.99, 71.75, 69.70 and 72.38% (wet basis) for Belete, Jalenie, Gera, Gudene and Chala varieties, respectively. Except specific gravity of potato tuber, other physical properties studied were significantly different at 5% of level of significance. Analysis of variance showed that there is also a significant difference in coefficient of static friction and angle of repose of all potato tuber varieties under four different materials and dynamic coefficient of friction under mild steel sheet metal and galvanized sheet.

The potato-soil separation device comprising five function areas (i.e., shearing, bending, throwing, cleaning, and conveying) was developed to address the mentioned problems (e.g., soil with high moisture content, large viscosity, and poor separation efficacy) in the harvesting process for winter idle paddy fields of Southern China. Given the kinetic analyses for the potato-soil mixture of five function areas, the crucial factors of the effect of potato-soil separation were determined. Subsequently, the orthogonal test of 4 factors and 3 levels was performed, and the percentage of small soil λ, the percentage of soil adhering to potato tuber γ, and damage rate of potato tuber K were adopted as assessment indexes. Regression analyses and programming for the orthogonal test result were conducted to optimize the device run parameters, and the optimal run parameters included the rotational speed of the soil-crushing mechanism of 84.18 r/min, linear velocity of second-stage lifting chain of 0.75 m/s, and inclination angle of lifting chain of 15.87°. The field experiments were performed with the modified potato harvester. As indicated from the result, the visible potato rate was 94.31% and damage rate of potato was 0.89%, and the requirement of the national standard was satisfied. This study presented technical feasibility data and equipment for potato-soil separation under sticky soils condition.
