In this paper we summarize more than a decade of interdisciplinary work at Calakmul, including (1) the mapping project, which has covered more than 30 km2; (2) the excavation project, which has uncovered major structures and tombs in the center of the city; (3) the epigraphic project, whose goal is to study the hieroglyphic texts and relate them to the archaeological evidence; (4) the analysis of the architecture, ceramics, and chipped stone to define sacred and secular activity areas and chronological stages; and (5) a focus on the ecology, hydrology, and paleoclimatology of Calakmul and its environs with the aim of understanding more fully its periods of development and decline.

The flexible packaging industry has registered a significant growth over the last years, especially due to rising demand from healthcare, automotive, construction, food, beverage, and retail industries. It is essential for the production plants to regularly assess their ability to achieve performance target objectives and, at the same time, to compare their performance with that of factories from the same industry. By combining qualitative and quantitative research, this study proposes a set of thirty-two key performance indicators (KPIs), grouped into six activity areas, believed to be adequate to the flexible packaging industry, for assessing the operational performance. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method was employed to obtain the weights of the KPIs and to select the best manufacturing facility from a leading flexible packaging company in line with the opinions of experts that activate in this field. The results indicated that the main aspects considered by experts for assessing manufacturing plants operational performance were financial issues followed by production, customers contentment, quality, employee satisfaction and environmental protection. The proposed practical framework for assessing the operational performance along with the detailed information obtained in the paper are expected to represent important benchmarks for stakeholders involved in the decision-making process for flexible packaging industry.

Reiterated and cursorily criticised generalisations of attributes for male and female in grave goods, have since the first half of the nineteenth century created an oversimplified yet politically intricate image of a specific task differentiation between men and women in prehistory. Ideals of male and female roles and tasks in the interpreter’s contemporary society have been described as universals in terms of binary oppositional pairs, or spheres, such as private/domestic-public. The dichotomies used for analysing and attributing male and female tasks have given preference to stereotypes, and the very formulation of the oppositional concepts for activity areas expresses ideological valuations ofmale and female. This article stresses the need for analysing the origin of concepts, and it seeks new and alternative ways of perceiving task differentiation.

Abstract. The article, based on an extensive field study carried out from 1995–1998 in a South Indian village, is concerned with the question of how vulnerable people can be identified and targeted. By focusing on the most important activity areas in the study village, i.e. on what people actually do, it is possible to see how social and spatial processes are tied up with each other. In the light of the fieldwork, a quantitative index of vulnerability is proposed. The purpose of this index is to measure the vulnerability of households in this particular setting, or at least to rank them according to their vulnerability. In keeping with the conceptual approach the index is not based on observed outcomes in the forms of incomes realised during the study period. Rather, by taking a close look at how such outcomes were achieved, it seeks to identify the core determinants of vulnerability which lay hidden in the complex social and spatial processes of everyday life in the study village. Under clearly defined conditions such indices may be helpful in targeting vulnerable groups. They are problematic with regard to both concept and method, however, in particular when applied in larger spatial and social contexts.

The A. C. Saunders site (41AN19) is an important ancestral Caddo settlement in the upper Neches River basin in Anderson County in East Texas. The site is one of only a few ancestral Caddo sites with mound features in the upper Neches River basin, particularly those that are known to date after ca. A.D. 1400, but this part of the upper Neches River basin, including its many tributaries, such as Caddo Creek just to the south and west, was widely settled by Caddo farmers after that time. These Caddo groups left behind evidence of year-round occupied settlements with house structures, middens, and outdoor activity areas, impressive artifact assemblages, as well as the creation of numerous cemeteries, most apparently the product of use by families or lineage groups.

The first approximation approach to seismic zoning of the areas adjacent to the Mongolia-Siberian region has been followed by the example of Erdenet town. The grounds have been given for problematic stages of working: study of some regular trends of seismic setting and current level of initial seismicity of the area; identification of seismic activity areas and assessment of their seismic potential; seismic modeling of sites with the most typical soil conditions; model theoretical calculating of basic parameters of seismic effects and model zoning of the investigated area. Technically, the stages of Erdenet town case study can serve as a basis for seismic zoning of the areas of interest that are adjacent to the Mongolia-Siberian region. The work has been done under financial support of RFBR project No. 07-05- 90111.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5564/pmas.v0i4.38Proceedings of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences 2007 No 4 pp.17-35

Control of the work quality of chemical and analytical departments of the refractory industry enterprises of Ukraine is one of the activity areas of JSC "The URIR named after A. S. Berezhnoy" and helps to increase the competitiveness of products manufactured by enterprises. The comparison of work quality of chemical-analytical units of refractory enterprises (JSC "KDZ", PJSC "Chasovoyarsk Refractory Plant", JSC "Velikoanadol Refractory Plant") and JSC "The URIR named after A. S. Berezhnoy" was carried out. The discrepancy between the average results of chemical analysis in the chemical-analytical unit of refractory enterprises and in the laboratory of chemical-analytical and structural-phase research of JSC "The URIR named after A. S. Berezhnoy" does not exceed the permissible value of γ in terms of SОU-N МPP 77.080-012:2004. The work quality of chemical-analytical units of central refractory laboratories of all the above mentioned refractory enterprises is satisfactory. Recommendations for improving the accuracy of the chemical analysis results in the refractory enterprises laboratories that participated in the tests are not required.
