The taxonomic status of the gerbil Gerbillus amoenus in relation to Gerbillus nanus and the distribution range of these two species in Africa and/or Asia have long been debated and are not yet fully clarified. In our study, we identify two specimens of small gerbils that we captured in two localities of the south of Morocco, using morphometric and/or molecular tools. The body and skull measurements were not able to unambiguously discriminate between three closely related small gerbils (Gerbillus amoenus, Gerbillus nanus and Gerbillus henleyi). However, the cytochrome b gene analysis showed that our two specimens cluster unambiguously with haplotypes of G. amoenus. This represents the first genetic characterization of G. amoenus in Morocco. It confirms, based on mitochondrial DNA, that the previously described species living in Africa is indeed G. amoenus and not G. nanus, the latter species being present strictly in Asia.

Stripped snakehead (Channa striata Bloch,1793) has potency to be developed in Indonesia due to high nutritional value including omega 3 which is useful for children growth. However, study on composition of mitochondrial DNA nucleotide as a part of study on genetic characterization of stripped snakehead fish in Indonesia is poorlyunderstood. Genetic characterization of stripped snakehead is important to obtain data information that can be applied for breeding and conservation program. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the 16S and COI mitochondrial DNA nucleotide of stripped snakehead collected from Lake Sentani, Jayapura, Papua. Method used in this research is PCR method using primer 16Sar and 16Sbr for 16S mitochondrial gene, and FishF2 and FishR2 for COI mitochondrial gene. The results showed that composition of 16S mtDNA nucleotide from 616 bp was T=21.92%, C=25.49%, A=30.19%, dan G=22.40%, whereas composition of A+T=52.11% and G+C=47.89%. In addition, composition of COI mtDNA nucleotide from 705 bp was T=29.93%, C=28.65%, A=24.26%, and G=17.16% while composition of A+T=54.48% and G+C=45.52%. Data of 16S and COI mitochondrial DNA nucleotide composition of the stripped snakehead collected from Lake Sentani gained in this study are to be expected to complete genetic information of the fish species which is useful to improve breeding program of this fish species in the future.

Phyllophorella was recently described from two localities on the central coast of Peru (12°S), based on the endemic species Phyllophora (Ph.) peruviana. The genus currently accommodates three species, Phyllophorella (P.) peruviana, P. humboldtiana and P. limaensis. Recent field surveys for Phyllophorella on the central coast of Peru led to the discovery of collections outside the originally reported ranges. Morphological, anatomical, and genetic characterization of the specimens confirms range extensions for P. peruviana to 9° S and 15° S, and P. humboldtiana to 12° S and 15° S. A combined phylogenetic analysis of rbcL and COI-5P gene sequences supports the taxonomic status of these two species and reasserts the genus as monophyletic. Anatomically, the two species differ in nemathecial structure. Phyllophorella peruviana displays dome-shaped and well-defined circular nemathecia, whereas in P. humboldtiana they are irregular and diffuse in form. Mature cystocarps were observed for the first time in Phyllophorella, in P. humboldtiana from Lima and Ica, Peru. Phyllophorella, as well as the other genera classified to the family Phyllophoraceae, have a procarpic sexual system, with a carpogonial branch of three cells; the cystocarp develops a thickened cortex, is immersed in the medulla, and lacks a pericarp and an ostiole. This study demonstrates that field work, together with morphological, developmental, and genetic analyses, are useful methods for improving our understanding of seaweed distributions and systematics.
