William Farnsworth Loomis studied the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum for more than fifty years as a professor of biology at the University of California, San Diego, USA. This biographical reflection describes Dr. Loomis’ major scientific contributions to the field within a career arc that spanned the early days of molecular biology up to the present day where the acquisition of high-dimensional datasets drive research. Dr. Loomis explored the genetic control of social amoeba development, delineated mechanisms of cell differentiation, and significantly advanced genetic and genomic technology for the field. The details of Dr. Loomis’ multifaceted career are drawn from his published work, from an autobiographical essay that he wrote near the end of his career and from extensive conversations between him and the two authors, many of which took place on the deck of his beachfront home in Del Mar, California.

With the development of modern science and technology, it is easy to obtain a large number of high-dimensional datasets, which are related but different. Classical unimodel analysis is less likely to capture potential links between the different datasets. Recently, a collaborative regression model based on least square (LS) method for this problem has been proposed. In this paper, we propose a robust collaborative regression based on the least absolute deviation (LAD). We give the statistical interpretation of the LS-collaborative regression and LAD-collaborative regression. Then we design an efficient symmetric Gauss–Seidel-based alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm to solve the two models, which has the global convergence and the Q-linear rate of convergence. Finally we report numerical experiments to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed methods.

Depth-ambiguous point-light walkers are most frequently seen as facing-the-viewer (FTV). It has been argued that the FTV bias depends on recognising the stimulus as a person. Accordingly, reducing the social relevance of biological motion by presenting stimuli upside down has been shown to reduce FTV bias. Here, we replicated the experiment that reported this finding and added stick figure walkers to the task in order to assess the effect of explicit shape information on facing bias for inverted figures. We measured the FTV bias for upright and inverted stick figure walkers and point-light walkers presented in different azimuth orientations. Inversion of the stimuli did not reduce facing direction judgements to chance levels. In fact, we observed a significant facing away bias in the inverted stimulus conditions. In addition, we found no difference in the pattern of data between stick figure and point-light walkers. Although the results are broadly consistent with previous findings, we do not conclude that inverting biological motion simply negates the FTV bias; rather, inversion causes stimuli to be seen facing away from the viewer more often than not. The results support the interpretation that primarily low-level visual processes are responsible for the biases produced by both upright and inverted stimuli.

The author proves the idea of sanctity of the testator’s will and the development of opportunities for its most complete implementation in the laws as well as in the modern notarial practice. Judicial practice in cases on acknowledgment of a will invalid is in the center of the author’s attention. Its analysis has allowed to identify the tendency of acknowledgment of wills made in favor of persons taking care of the elderly over the last years of their lives invalid based on claims of relatives showing no concern and paying no attention to the elderly during their lifetime. In the meantime, wrongful acts of notaries expressed in violation of the procedure and the rules for performance of notarial actions have served as the grounds for acknowledgment of wills invalid. The author encourages notaries and judges to pay more attention to the testator’s will (intentions) and create all conditions to implement such will after the testator’s death as adequately as possible.

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and its counterpart, scanning TEM (STEM), are powerful materials characterization tools capable of probing crystal structure, composition, charge distribution, electronic structure, and bonding down to the atomic scale. Recent (S)TEM instrumentation developments such as electron beam aberration-correction as well as faster and more efficient signal detection systems have given rise to new and more powerful experimental methods, some of which (e.g., 4D-STEM, spectrum-imaging, in situ/operando (S)TEM)) facilitate the capture of high-dimensional datasets that contain spatially-resolved structural, spectroscopic, time- and/or stimulus-dependent information across the sub-angstrom to several micrometer length scale. Thus, through the variety of analysis methods available in the modern (S)TEM and its continual development towards high-dimensional data capture, it is well-suited to the challenge of characterizing isometric mixed-metal oxides such as pyrochlores, fluorites, and other complex oxides that reside on a continuum of chemical and spatial ordering. In this review, we present a suite of imaging and diffraction (S)TEM techniques that are uniquely suited to probe the many types, length-scales, and degrees of disorder in complex oxides, with a focus on disorder common to pyrochlores, fluorites and the expansive library of intermediate structures they may adopt. The application of these techniques to various complex oxides will be reviewed to demonstrate their capabilities and limitations in resolving the continuum of structural and chemical ordering in these systems.


Diabetes is a long-term disease that ends up in multiple side-effects. It has now become a reticent exterminator in society because it doesn’t reveal any signs hitherto to the patients until it’s too late. It leads to many complications to other organs, such as kidney, cardiovascular, liver or blood pressure [1]. This work tends to apply a unique multitask learning [2] to synchronously map the relation between manifold complications wherever every task conforms to risks of modelling of complications [3]. It also uses feature selection to reduce the set of risk factors from high-dimensional datasets. Then using the concept of correlation, it finds the degree of relativity among various sideeffects. The proposed method is able to identify the possible future health hazards identified with the diabetes patient. This will enable us to explain medical conditions and can improves healthcare applications which would help to improve disease prediction performance.

This article aims to show how the social movement was conducted in the framework of claiming a number of aspects of citizenship, especially environmental rights and political participation, to the local government. The refusal of FRAT Bima over the extractive policy of the Government of Bima District during 2011-2012 becomes a reflective context of the type of social movement with such a framework. This social protest should be explored further because it used acts of vandalism on some public facilities as the chosen way to fight against the environmental and political injustices. Through a case study, the author aims to explore the sequence of repertoires which were applied sequentially by FRAT Bima’s social protest as well as to examine its linkage with environmental citizenship and public distrust. Despite being closely related to citizens' awareness about environmental citizenship, the occurrence of this anarchist movement was also triggered by the low level of "formal legitimacy" of the local government as a seed of public distrust towards the intentions of environmental governance policy that was about to be applied to make the agricultural land owned by villagers as the site of a certain project of mineral extraction. The lack of the government’s formal legitimacy, which was supported by the growing awareness of environmental citizenship, has led the sequential application of conventional and non-conventional strategies in the demands articulation of FRAT Bima. This sequence of repertoires was held due to the low-level of government's responsiveness in accommodating the public claims about the cancellation of an undemocratic environmental policy.
