EVALUATION OF SLEEP QUALITY INDEX IN POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL STUDENTS IN INDIA

Background: Sleep quality is dened as the satisfaction of the sleep experience, integrating aspects of sleep initiation, sleep maintenance, sleep quantity, and refreshment upon awakening. It is important to measure sleep quality in postgraduate medical students and this study aims to monitor it across the various years of the course. Methodology: A cross-sectional study involving medical postgraduates students at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Research & Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi was conducted. All rst- to third-year postgraduate students were invited to participate. It was a self rated questionnaire based study using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: Poor sleep quality as observed using raised global PSQI of more than 5 was seen in 104 students (74%). Of this, 39 students belonged to third year (88.6%), 37 students were from second year (74%) and 28 students were from rst year (59.6%). Only 26% of students showed an adequate sleep quality with global PSQI <5.The mean global PSQI scores for students in rst, second and third year were 6.2, 6.6 and 7.8 respectively reecting that third year students were most affected. Conclusion: Postgraduate medical students have more sleep disturbance with impaired sleep quality. Sleep quality has a strong inuence on physical and mental health. Active intervention is required to improve sleep hygiene in these students.

Background: Smartphone with its various functionalities has become an essential part of our daily activities and its use has been increasing. This has raised concern about its overuse and addiction especially in students. It is known that poor sleep is very common among medical students; there are many studies on sleep quality and its determinants in medical students but very few relating sleep quality and smartphone addiction. The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between smartphone use severity and sleep quality among medical students of KIMS, Hubballi. Methods: A cross‑sectional study on sample of 240 undergraduate medical students KIMS, Hubballi was conducted. Students were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire, Smart phone addiction scale (SAS) and Pittsburgh sleep quality inventory (PSQI). SAS score and PSQI scores were co-related. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to identify the variables independently associated with level of sleep quality. Results: Out of 240 subjects 117 (48.75%) were poor sleepers & 123 (51.25%) were good sleepers according to PSQI global sleep score. According to SAS score 123 (51.2%) were low users and 117 (48.75%) were high users of Smart phone. The mean (SD) PSQI global score was 4.8 (2.49) and mean (SD) SAS score was 102.93 (22.13). There was positive correlation between SAS score & PSQI score (r=0.343, p<0.001). Gender (β=0.141, p=0.021) & SAS score (β=0.292, p<0.001) were the significant predictors of global PSQI score. Conclusions: This study concludes that in medical students smartphone addiction affects sleep quality significantly and males are particularly more at risk of having poor sleep quality due to excessive smartphone use.

Background: Aim of the study was to assess the sleep quality among medical students and explore its relation to many variables as BMI, smoking and chronic diseases.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted among medical students at Ibn Sina national college, Jeddah, KSA. This study was approved by Research Center. A total of 408 participants; Participants are who admitted to hospital for last two days, pregnant and who under 18 years were excluded. We consider p value=0.05 as significant statistically and our confidant interval (CI) is 95%. We used bivariate and univariant variables, for categorical variables we used Chi-square and Fisher exact test.Results: The participants’ mean age was 22.6±2.7 (87.9%) of them were females. Most of our participants were Single (89.8%). A total of 85.9% of the students had poor sleep quality. Those who had less than 6 Hours of sleeping per day had poor sleep quality by 92.2% and statistically affecting their sleep quality p value =0.000. There was no statistically significant relation between sleep quality and academic year or with Gender (p=0.139, p=0.263) respectively. There was no statistical correlation between Sleep quality and Nightmares or Snoring (p value =0.063, 0.055) respectively.Conclusions: Poor sleep quality was prevalent in all class years of the undergraduate medical course and more common between females. This study revealed high prevalence of poor sleep quality. Sleep educational programs, stress management courses and lifestyles modifications are required.

BACKGROUND Due to stressful occupational conditions, irregular dietary and sleep schedules, medical students are at increased risk of developing gastrointestinal disorders, gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) in particular, as well as sleep disturbances. Therefore, for the first time, we aimed to assess the correlation between GERD and sleep disturbances among medical students. METHODS The current cross-sectional study was done on 290 medical students at different study periods in Iran during 2018-2019. Age, sex, stage of studying, residence, and body mass index were gathered. The frequency scale for the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (FSSG) was utilized to assess gastrointestinal symptoms among them and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality. Eventually, the association of sleep disturbances with demographic factors and gastrointestinal symptoms was evaluated. RESULTS Living in the dormitory (p = 0.048; OR: 1.73; 95%CI: 1.01-2.99) and being overweight (p < 0.001; OR: 3.09; 95%CI: 1.58-6.06) were independently correlated with impaired sleep quality. GERD presented either by heartburn (p < 0.001) or regurgitation (p < 0.001) was associated with a lower quality of life. CONCLUSION GERD was correlated with poor sleep quality among medical students. In addition, residence in dormitory and being overweight were correlated with poor sleep quality.

INTRODUCTION: Poor sleep quality is a common problem experienced by medical students worldwide. Therefore, this study aimed to measure the prevalence of poor sleep quality among medical students in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and its association with mental health and other factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study using convenience sampling was conducted among 500 medical students in IIUM Kuantan. A validated self-reported questionnaire including sociodemographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Depression Anxiety Stress Score 21 was distributed from 15th July to 31st August 2019. Descriptive statistics were used to measure the prevalence of poor sleep quality. Chi- square test, Fisher’s exact test, independent sample T-test, and multiple logistic regression were used to measure the association between risk factors and sleep quality. RESULT: The response rate was 91.2%. The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 59.6%. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed level of study (clinical year (AOR=0.44, 95% CI: 0.29 - 0.66) and depression (yes (AOR: 1.71, 95% CI 1.03-2.83) contributed independently on poor sleep quality among medical students. There was no significant relationship between tahajjud practice and poor sleep quality. CONCLUSION: More than half of IIUM medical students have poor sleep quality. Those students who were in the pre-clinical year and had depression were independently associated with the occurrence of poor sleep quality. Early intervention is compulsory to overcome this problem among medical students in IIUM.

Background — Sleep disorder is a common problem amongst medical students. The objective of this study is to determine the association of sleep disorder with academic performances among medical students in Sudan. Methods — A cross-sectional study was conducted in which 199 medical students were selected through simple random sampling techniques. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Epworth Sleepiness Scale were used to assess the sleep pattern and daytime sleepiness respectively. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association of sleep disorder with academic performance. Results — Majority of the students (82.5%) suffered poor sleep quality and 56.5% were suffered from severe day time sleepiness. All the characteristics of sleep quality were associated with poor academic performance but only sleep duration, use of sleep medication, global PSQI score and day time sleepiness were a statistically significant association with poor academic performance. Conclusion — A high prevalence of sleep disorder and its associated with poor academic performance was found in medical students. There is a need for a formulation of policies to address the factors which affect sleep of students.

Higher body mass index (BMI) increases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, but nearly a third of the people living with obesity (BMI: ≥30 kg/m2) are metabolically healthy (MHO). Extreme sleep durations and poor sleep quality are associated with higher bodyweight and cardiometabolic dysfunction, but the full extent to which sleep habits may help differentiate those with MHO versus metabolically abnormal obesity (MAO) is not yet known. Data from the U.S. National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 2005–08 was used (BMI: ≥30 kg/m2; ≥20 y;N=1,777). The absence of metabolic syndrome was used to define MHO. Those with MHO tended to be younger, female, Non-Hispanic Black, never smokers, more physically active, and with less physician diagnosed sleep disorders than MAO. Neither sleep duration nor overall sleep quality was related to MHO in crude or multivariable adjusted analyses; however, reporting “almost always” to having trouble falling asleep (OR (95% CI): 0.40 (0.20–0.78)), waking up during the night (0.38 (0.17–0.85)), feeling unrested during the day (0.35 (0.18–0.70)), and feeling overly sleepy during the day (0.35 (0.17–0.75)) was related to lower odds of MHO. Selected sleep quality factors, but not sleep quantity or overall sleep quality, are associated with the MHO phenotype.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Decreased physical activity has been associated with poorer mental health and is a cause for concern during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective: To compare groups of medical students (MS) who practiced different levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during the COVID-19 pandemic, in relation to symptoms of anxiety and depression (BAI-BDI), sleep quality (PSQI), and physical activity (PA) - light, moderate, vigorous (LPA-MPA and VPA), and sedentary behavior (SB). Methods: This research is a cross-sectional study involving 218 MS. Data on the characteristics of the MS were collected through online forms: PA, SB, BAI, BDI, and PSQI. The Cohen's D (Effect Size - ES) and confidence interval (95% CI), Mann-Whitney test: Lower MVPA (Median=0 minute) and Higher MVPA (Median=390 minutes) were recorded. For the statistical analyses, we used: the Odds ratio (OR) for the presence of symptoms of high levels of anxiety and depression and poor sleep quality in the MS and MVPA. Results: We found a small ES for symptoms of depression (ES 0.26 95% CI 0.00 0.53 p=0.029), and significant differences (p<0.05) for symptoms of anxiety (ES 0.17 95% CI −0.09 0.44 p=0.037). There was also a significant tendency for sedentary behavior on weekdays (ES 0.27 95% CI 0.00 0.53 p = 0.051). The OR for MVPA and the presence of symptoms of high levels of anxiety was 0.407 (95% CI = 0.228 to 0.724). Conclusions: the MS who practiced higher MVPA presented less symptoms of anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. Level of evidence III; Case-control study.

Objective: To evaluate the lifestyle factors possibly related with premenstrual syndrome which were body mass index, coffee intake, smoking, regular physical exercise, and alcohol consumption, and investigate the impact of these lifestyle factors and premenstrual syndrome on sleep quality. Methods and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 265 participants, and all applied Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Premenstrual Syndrome Scale questionnaires. Results: The prevalence of premenstrual syndrome among the participants was 57% (n:150). Participants with premenstrual syndrome had shorter total sleep time (p:0.001). Also, they needed longer time to fall asleep (p:0.001). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores of the participants with premenstrual syndrome were higher than those without premenstrual syndorme (p<0.001), indicating poor sleep quality. It was observed that the participants with premenstrual syndrome had more coffee intake (p:0.040) and more regular physical activity (p:0.009), which were risk factors of premenstrual syndrome. premenstrual syndrome positivity was associated with increased poor sleep quality in both univariate and multivariate analyses (OR:5.93 95% CI: 3.46-10.15, p<0.001; OR:5.61 95% CI: 3.19-9.88, p<0.001, respectively). The remaining variables, which were risk factors of premenstrual syndrome, didn’t have any statistically significant association with sleep quality. Conclusion: The important relation between premenstrual syndrome and sleep quality is highlighted. Relief of premenstrual syndrome complaints may lead to better sleep quality and enhancement of quality of life for a woman.

Abstract ObjectivePrevious studies have shown the association between diet quality and sleep quality. the objective of this study was to observe the association between modified Nordic diet with sleep quality and circadian rhythm in overweight and obese woman.MethodsWe enrolled 399 overweight and obese women (body mass index (BMI): 25-40 kg/m2) aged 18-48 years in cross-sectional study. For each participant anthropometric measurements, biochemical test and food intake were evaluated. Sleep quality and circadian rhythm was measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Morning Evening Questionnaire (MEQ) questionnaire. Modified Nordic diet score was measured using a validated 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ).ResultsAmong all participants, Overall, 51.7% of the subjects were good sleepers (the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) < 5) while 48.3% were poor sleepers (PSQI ≥ 5). Moreover, participants were divided into 5 groups of MEQ namely, completely morning 8(2.4%), rarely morning 82(24.8%), normal 196(59.2%), rarely evening 43(13%), completely evening 2(0.6%). After controlling for confounder there was a significant association between the poor sleep quality and modified Nordic diet (OR=0.80, %95 CI=0.66-0.98, P=0.01). Moreover, a significant positive association was observed between the completely morning and modified Nordic diet (OR=1.80, %95 CI=0.54-6.00, P=0.03) and also a significant reverse association was observed between completely evening type and modified Nordic diet (OR=0.16, %95 CI=0.002-5.41, P=0.02).ConclusionsThe present study indicate that higher adherence to a modified Nordic diet decreases poor sleep quality. Also, the completely morning type associated with higher adherence to a modified Nordic diet and completely evening type associated with lower adherence to a modified Nordic diet.Levels of EvidenceLevel IV, evidence obtained from with multiple time series analysis.
