When optimizing the relief at the top of the trapezoidal sulfide-containing mine dump, young soil (embryozem) was formed as a result of abio- and biotic factors. In parallel with the formation of embryozems, primary succession processes are developing. As a result, the species composition of vegetation, the staging and intensity of progressive succession were studied depending on the mesorelief of dumps in accordance with the weathering and soil formation processes developing over time. The properties and indicators of young soil in depressions and sulfide rock (control) 25 years after the completion of the dumping of the rock pile were studied. As a result of optimization at the top of the dump, the processes of formation of embryozems in the depressions are significantly accelerated.

The crucial role of microbes in the evolution, development, health, and ecological interactions of multicellular organisms is now widely recognized in the holobiont concept. However, the structure and stability of microbiota are highly dependent on abiotic and biotic factors, especially in the gut, which can be colonized by transient bacteria depending on the host’s diet. We studied these impacts by manipulating the digestive microbiota of the detritivore Armadillidium vulgare and analyzing the consequences on its structure and function. Hosts were exposed to initial starvation and then were fed diets that varied the different components of lignocellulose. A total of 72 digestive microbiota were analyzed according to the type of the diet (standard or enriched in cellulose, lignin, or hemicellulose) and the period following dysbiosis. The results showed that microbiota from the hepatopancreas were very stable and resilient, while the most diverse and labile over time were found in the hindgut. Dysbiosis and selective diets may have affected the host fitness by altering the structure of the microbiota and its predicted functions. Overall, these modifications can therefore have effects not only on the holobiont, but also on the “eco-holobiont” conceptualization of macroorganisms.

Research has shown that ideal romantic standards predict future partner characteristics and influence existing relationships, but how standards develop and change among single individuals has yet to be explored. Using the Ideal Standards Model, the present study sought to determine whether repeated experiences of romantic rejection and acceptance over time influence ideal standards, ideal flexibility, and self-perceived mate value (N = 208). Per expectations, results suggest repeated experiences of rejection result in decreases in ideal standards and self-perceived mate value and increases in ideal flexibility, though no effects emerged for acceptance. Given the predictive nature of ideal standards and the influence rejection has on such, findings from this study contribute to a greater understanding of relationship formation processes. Abstract Eusuchia is a crocodyliform clade with a rich and diverse fossil record dating back to the Mesozoic. There are several recent studies that analyse crocodyliform palaeodiversity over time, but none of them focuses exclusively on eusuchians. Thus, we estimated subsampled eusuchian palaeodiversity species dynamics over time not only at a global scale, but also by continents and main crocodylian lineages (Alligatoroidea, Crocodyloidea and Gavialoidea). These estimates reveal complex spatiotemporal palaeodiversity patterns, in which two maxima can be detected: the first during the Palaeocene and the second, which is also the biggest, in the middle-late Miocene. The Palaeocene shift is related to a North American alligatoroid diversification, whereas the middle–late Miocene maximum is related to a diversification of the three main Crocodylia lineages in Gondwanan land masses, but especially in South America. Additionally, a model-based study using generalized least squares was carried out to analyse the relationships between different abiotic and sampling proxies and eusuchian palaeodiversity. The results show that palaeotemperature is the most important factor amongst the analysed proxies, in accordance with previous studies. However, the results suggest that, along with palaeotemperature, other abiotic and/or biotic factors might also be driving eusuchian palaeodiversity dynamics.

ABSTRACTUnderstanding soil formation processes across different landscapes is needed to predict how soil properties will respond to land use change. This study aimed to characterize mountainous Inceptisols (Cambisols) under high altitude subtropical climate in southeastern Brazil, by soil physical, chemical and micromorphological analyses, under native forest and pasture. The soil under pasture had a greater bulk density than under forest, resulting in a severe reduction of macroporosity. At two depths, coarse quartz grains are angular, suggesting absence of transportational processes, thus confirming an autochthonous pedogenesis from the underlying gneissic rock. Most feldspars were weathered beyond recognition, but mineral alteration was commonly seen across cleavage plans and edges of micas. The micromorphological results suggest an intermediate stage of mineral weathering and soil development, which is in accordance with properties expected to be found in Inceptisols.

ABSTRACT Three soils of postglacial age, representing a chronosequence in the Rouge River Basin of south-central Ontario, were studied to determine variations in morphological, physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties. These soils, forming in alluvium of mixed mineralogy represent the Late HoIocene (Entisol), Middle Holocene (lnceptisol),and Early Holocene (lnceptisol) surfaces. Horizon differentiation and soil thickness increase with greater age, while pH drops slightly in the sola of the older profiles. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic matter in the surface horizons increases slightly with age, while, for the most part, CaCO3 and Ca/ Mg ratio decrease. Significant changes occur over time, especially with an increase of dithionite-extractable iron with age (from ~ 0.20 in the Late Holocene soil to ~ 0.70 in the Middle to Early Holocene profiles). Illite and illite-smectite tend to decrease with age, being replaced by small amounts of chlorite and vermiculite. In spite of some variability in parent materials due to stratification and preweathering, and minor changes in species composition, the changes in soil properties are attributed to processes of soil formation acting over time.

Engineering and geographic substantiation of the anti-erosion organization of agricultural landscapes requires not only differentiated estimations of erosion losses, but also commensurate (in terms of space–time scales) estimations of the soil loss tolerance. The main approaches for determining the participation of estimations of soil formation in the substantiation of erosion tolerance have been defined. This study is aimed at justifying the methods of incorporating the results of pedogenesis modeling into computational methods for organizing agricultural landscapes. This paper presents the results of a study of the process of formation of the humus horizon and the accumulation of organic carbon in soils, based on soils from archaeological sites in the Crimean Peninsula over a period from 25 to 2000 years ago, with differences in climate and parent rock, in a region with a thousand-year history of human activity. The patterns of variation in the thickness of the humus horizons over time and the accumulation of carbon were determined, and estimates for the rate of the pedogenesis were obtained. In connection with the slowing of the rate of pedogenesis over time, the chronofunction of the change in the thickness of soils (of both exponential and logistic types) may be applied and, on this basis, it is possible to calculate the rates of the formation of the humus horizon depending on the morphological status of the soils. During re-naturation of highly degraded soils, maximum renewal rates may take place only with a very high input of organic matter, which is crucial to take into account in the development and implementation of programs for the rehabilitation of degraded lands. Under the conditions of slope agriculture, the rationale for T-values should be linked to many factors of the input and consumption of organic carbon, which provides a logical mathematical model of the formation of soil quality. For soil quality management on agricultural lands, a formula for calculating T-values, using an equation where the rate of pedogenesis is associated with a variety of changes in soil organic carbon, is proposed in this article.

Marco Gonzalez is one of a number of Maya sites on Belize’s coast and cayes (coral islands) that exhibit anomalous vegetation and dark-coloured soils. Like Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs), the soils are sought locally for cultivation and are underlain by anthropogenic deposits. Our research is aimed at assessing the role of the anthropogenic deposits in soil formation processes with a view to developing strategies to quantify the long-term environmental impact of human activities today.

The process of ecosystem development over time that takes place on a new substrate devoid of biological activity (such as, for example, lava) is called primary succession. Research on primary succession is not easy, as it is limited to rare occasions when a piece of land totally lacking in any pre-existing life occurs. The emergence of volcanic islands is such an occasion; it is a unique event that allows a natural experiment in the study of colonisation processes and primary succession. Surtsey (located in the Vestmannaeyar archipelago off the southern coast of Iceland) is an iconic example of a place where primary succession has been studied for decades and where human disturbance has been minimised due to significant geographic isolation and early protection efforts. Here, we present a georeferenced dataset of vacular plant occurrences collected during the field studies carried out on Surtsey Island during the first three decades of its existence. To date, no dataset containing plant distribution data documenting the process of early stages of colonisation of Surtsey has been published. What is more, to our knowledge, there is no other dataset that can be compared with our Surtsey data that is readily available for researchers working on plant colonisation dynamics and primary succession processes. Here, we present a complete, geo-referenced dataset of all plant occurrences (10,094 in total) collected on Surtsey between 1965 and 1990.

The importance of mycorrhizal fungi for soil formation and carbon sequestration has been highlighted in recent research. Here we discuss these findings in relation to primary successions by use of data from Surtsey and from lava fields around Mount Fuji in Japan.
