Sewage sludge treatment and utilization is an important issue for a biodegradable waste management strategy. Heavy metals in sewage sludge complicate its use. Vermicomposting is one of the ways to improve the characteristics of sewage sludge and to reduce the residual concentrations of heavy metals. Study on changes in the concentration of heavy metals (Chromium, Nickel and Cadmium), when vermicomposting sewage sludge, was performed using Californian earthworms (Eisenia fetida). For that purpose, 60 kg of sewage sludge from Vilnius Waste Water Treatment Plant were taken thus inserting 1.5 kg of Californian earthworms into it. Optimal conditions for work (optimum temperature, moisture, pH) for earthworms to survive were maintained in the course of the study that lasted 120 days and was conducted in June – August. The samples of sewage sludge and earthworms were taken every 10 days. The concentrations of heavy metals in sewage sludge were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Nuotekų dumblo tvarkymo ir naudojimo problema – svarbi biologiškai skaidžių atliekų tvarkymo strategijos dalis. Lietuvoje kasmet susidaro apie 80 tūkst. tonų nuotekų dumblo, o didžiausia dalis šio kiekio vis dar sandėliuojama valyklų aikštelėse. Nuotekų dumblas gali būti efektyviai naudojamas žemės ūkyje, tačiau sunkieji metalai, esantys nuotekų dumble, apsunkina jo naudojimą. Vienas iš būdų pagerinti dumblo savybes ir kartu sumažinti liekamąsias metalų koncentracijas – nuotekų dumblo vermikompostavimas. Sunkiųjų metalų (chromo, nikelio ir kadmio) koncentracijų kaitos vermikompostuojant nuotekų dumblą tyrimas atliktas naudojant Kalifornijos sliekus (Eisenia fetida). Tirta sunkiųjų metalų koncentracijos kaita viso kompostavimo proceso metu. Tyrimui naudotas nuotekų dumblas (60 kg) buvo paimtas iš Vilniaus miesto nuotekų valyklos ir į jį įleista 1,5 kg Kalifornijos sliekų. Viso tyrimo metu buvo palaikomos optimalios sąlygos sliekams gyvuoti ir veikti (optimali temperatūra, drėgmė, pH). Tyrimo trukmė – 120 parų (birželio–rugpjūčio mėnesiai), dumblo mėginiai imti 10 parų intervalu. Išmatuotos ir nustatytos sunkiųjų metalų – chromo, nikelio ir kadmio – koncentracijos nuotekų dumble.

The amount of sewage sludge (SS) used in agriculture and forest plantations is constantly growing in EU. It’s known that even after various treatment methods some of contaminants still remain. The main risks of using SS in agriculture or forestry are related with hevy metals and organic pollutants content in SS. Heavy metals tend to acumu-late in the environment and living organisms and may cause different adverse effects. Bioremediation using earthworms can be used to eliminate or mitigate the threat of heavy metals. Bioremediation is cheaper, requiries less energy and is more environmentally friendly than conventional physical or chemical remediation methods. But it’s really important to evaluate bioremediation efficiency for SS, because there is evidence that nutrients in SS might improve efficiency of bioremediation. In this study earthworms Eisenia fetida were exposed for 9 weeks to SS amended soil. Earthworm mortality, growth and heavy metals (Al, Fe) accumulation were evaluated. The results showed that SS had a highly significant effect on earthworm mortality (F=4.98; p;lt0.05) and growth (F=3.88–67.02; p;lt0.05). Both metals concentrations in soil were signifficant (p;lt0.05) lower after vermi-remediation than after SS soil amendments. SS concentration had a significant effect to Al concentration accumulated in earthworm tissue (F=33.71; p;lt0.05). This study demonstrated that bioremediation efficiency using E. fetida depends on concentrations of SS, survival and growth of earthworms.

The use of sewage sludge in agriculture decreases the pressure on landfills. In Romania, massive investments have been made in wastewater treatment stations, which have resulted in the accumulation of important quantities of sewage sludge. The presence of these sewage sludges coincides with large areas of degraded agricultural land. The aim of the present article is to identify the best technological combinations meant to solve these problems simultaneously. Adapting the quality and parameters of the sludge to the specificity of the land solves the possible compatibility problems, thus reducing the impact on the environment. The physico-chemical characteristics of the fermented sludge were monitored and optimal solutions for their treatment were suggested so as to allow that the sludge could be used in agriculture according to the characteristics of the soils. The content of heavy metals in the sewage sludge was closely monitored because the use of sewage sludge as a fertilizer does not allow for any increases in the concentrations of these in soils. The article identifies those agricultural areas which are suitable for the use of sludge, as well as ways of correcting some parameters (e.g., pH), which allow the improvement of soil quality and obtained higher agricultural production.
