This paper presents a physico-chemical and ecological characterization of some ponds of anthropogenic origin, resulted from the drilling and extraction of lithological substrate. These artificial water bodies located in a Natura 2000 protected area are the result of some environmental pressures and replaced a potential meadow vegetation. The study aims to characterize the ponds in the perspective of their evaluation as support habitats for fauna and vegetation. For this, some typical physico-chemical parameters of water bodies, important to aquatic life, were analyzed: conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, turbidity, temperature, ammonium concentrations, nitrate, nitrites, free ammonia, total ammonia, free residual chlorine, total chlorine, phosphates, iron, copper, total alkalinity and water hardness. Also, the types of vegetation and natural habitats were identified and mapped. The analysis of the water quality in the studied area is very important for the conservation and improvement of the natural ecological system.

In 12 astatic pools, each of which was characterised by the dominance of phytocenoses of one of three plant associations, investigations were performed on the physico-chemical properties of the water and bottom sediments, in order to establish the relations between the habitat conditions and vegetation. The criterion of the degree of saltiness of the bottom sediments and the specific conductivity of water in these water bodies allows to order them according to their decreasing fertility as follows: 1) water bodies with dominant phytocenoses of the association Equisetetum limosi, 2) with Caricetum elatae, 3) with Typhetum latifoliae. The type of vegetation indicates also connections with other properties of the water (hardness, oxidability, pH, chloride content) and of the bottom sediment (organic matter content, chlorides, magnesium and various forms of nitrogen). Correlation between the chemical composition of the water and depostis has only been demonstrated in the case of chlorides.

This paper presents the applicability of ecohydromorphology assessment in differentiating ecophysical structure of river habitats of Rio das Velhas river basin upward of Rio de Pedras reservoir, Minas Gerais,Brazil. It also presents the identification of the factors conditioning the ecophysical structure of river habitats. This review associated with biological and physico-chemical conditions of the waters aims to assess the ecological integrity of the river system and also validate the characterization of water bodies identified on a large scale in the Rio das Velhas basin.

Brick industries are unorganised, rural, small scale industries in Cachar district of Assam which play an important role in economic development of the entire region. It has been observed during the study that these brick industries are responsible for large scale environmental problems like land degradation, air pollution, water quality degradation and loss of biodiversity. The present study deals with the quality of water in the selected brick kilns in Cachar district and its degradation during Jan-Dec 2014. The existing water bodies are contaminated with different compounds and continuous siltation from the brick kilns. The research focuses on the variation of various physico-chemical parameters such as water temperature, pH, conductivity, Total alkalinity, Dissolved oxygen, Carbondioxide, Nitrate, Phosphate, Transparency in the selected water bodies. The studied ponds were found to be in degrading state with less productivity. Moreover, the result obtained showed the need and urgency to restore the physical, chemical and biological management tactics to conserve and preserve the ecological imbalance and disturbance in the hydro-geo-chemical and hydro-biological cycles that adversely affect the food chain and food web in the brick kiln affected aquatic bodies.

The fourth generation cephalosporin antibacterial agent, cefepime, was loaded into layered double hydroxides for enhancing antibiotic efficiency, reducing side effects, as well as achieving the sustained release property. The intercalation of antibiotic into the inter-gallery of ZnAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) was carried out using ion exchange method, by this constituting a nano-sized organic-inorganic hybrid material for a controlled release novel formulation. Although cefepime is a broad spectrum antibiotic, it has various adverse effects and a significant degradation rate. Thus, the preparation and physico-chemical characterization of nanomaterials able to intercalate this drug is an important study for medical and pharmaceutical field. The antibiotic inclusion into LDHs nanostructure was confirmed by advanced characterization techniques and the release profile of cefepime was analysed with the respect to pH of the simulated media.
