This wonderfully illustrated book accompanied an exhibition that took place at the Morgan Library & Museum, New York, from June 8 to September 23, 2018, authored by two well established and respected art historian*s, who provide us with a sweeping view of the world of monsters and many other related creatures in medieval fantasy. While previous research mostly focused on monsters in the narrow sense of the word, i.e., grotesque and oversized human-like creatures normally threatening ordinary people in their existence, Lindquist and Mittman pursue a much broader perspective and incorporate also many other features in human imagination, including wonders, aliens, Jews, Muslims, strangers in general, the femme fatale, sirens, undines, mermaids (but there is no reference to the Melusine figure, though she would fit much better into the general framework), devils, and evil spirits. However, I do not understand why ‘gargoyles’ have been left out here. This vast approach allows them also to address the beasts from the Physiologus tradition, then natural wonders, giants, and then, quite surprisingly, religious scenes in psalters (148), depictions of nobles playing chess (150; where are the wild men alleged surrounding the players?), the whore of Babylon (153), figures from the Apocalypse, and anything else that smacks of wonder.

During April 1996, the Hofstra Cultural Center organized an internationalinterdisciplinary conference that focused upon the role of inscriptionin Islamic art. The conference included diverse areas of inquiry. Forinstance, it accepted a paper that addressed the usage of Arabic script asinscription in different parts of the world and provided an opportunity to listento papers that considered inscription as an icon as well as its context,function, and comparative features. In addition, the coordinators organizedan exhibition of the works of several artists who were invited specificallyto talk about their works. This exhibition started with the opening of theconference and continued into May. On display was a unique blend of traditionaland modem uses of Arabic calligraphy--objects from the seventhcentury as well as those produced via contemporary technology.Habibeh Rahim, who is attached to Hofstra University's department ofphilosophy, and Alexej Ugrinsky of the Cultural Center, were the conferencedirector and coordinator, respectively. The former initiated the ideaand, with a committee of individuals, hosted the conference and exhibiteda selection of Islamic art. This exhibition was supported further by permanentdisplays in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, theBrooklyn Museum, the Pierpont Morgan Library, and the New York PublicLibrary.The conference opened with prayers from each of the major religioustraditions and two brief addresses by Habibeh Rahim and DavidChristman, the dean of New College and current director of HofstraMuseum. Dace Prauliņš, Latvian. An Essential Grammar. London & New York: Routledge, 2012. ɪsʙɴ 978-0-415-57692-5. Descriptive grammars of Modern Latvian written in English are still something of a rarity, and any such book will be warmly welcomed bylinguists as well as by the growing number of people learning Latvian all over the world. It is for the latter group that Dace Prauliņš wrote this book, and it would be unfair to review it as a scholarly contribution to the analysis of Latvian grammar.

This study deals with Universal Values and Muslim Democracy. This essay draws upon speeches that he gave at the New York Democ- racy Forum in December 2005 and the Assembly of the World Movement for Democracy in Istanbul in April 2006. The emergence of Muslim democracies is something significant and worthy of our attention. Yet with the clear exceptions of Indonesia and Turkey, the Muslim world today is a place where autocracies and dictatorships of various shades and degrees continue their parasitic hold on the people, gnawing away at their newfound freedoms. It concludes that the human desire to be free and to lead a dignified life is universal. So is the abhorrence of despotism and oppression. These are passions that motivate not only Muslims but people from all civilizations.

Authors from the Christian Right in the USA situate the September 11 attack on New York and Washington within God's intentions to bring America into the divine schedule for the end of the world. This is true of Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, and other leading figures in the ‘Christian Coalition’. This article analyses how Christian fundamentalists assess the roles of the USA, the State of Israel, Islam, Iraq, the European Union and Russia within what they perceive to be the divine plan for the future of the world, especially against the background of ‘9/11’. It argues that the ideas of the Christian Right and of President George W. Bush coalesce to a high degree. Whereas before 9/11 many American mega-church preachers had aspirations to direct political life, after the events of that day the President assumes some of the roles of a mega-religious leader.
