To determine the rate and types of musculoskeletal injuries among Taekwondo players from Taekwondo clubs in Malaysia. A total of 490 Taekwondo players from various clubs in Malaysia were involved in a cross-sectional study using a self-response questionnaire adopted from different studies and validated before the commencement of the study. The players were recruited from various clubs in different states of Malaysia. The number of players suffered from injuries was 300 as compared to 190 with no injuries. Males players suffered from musculoskeletal injures more than females (p = 0.019). Also, males complained of multiple injuries more than females (p = 0.019). The rate of the injuries among black belt holders was higher as compared to the colour belt (p < 0.001) and black belt holders more liable for multiple injuries (p <0.001). The semi-professional players complained of sport injures more than others (p = 0.021). The longer the experience the higher rate of injuries (p < 0.001). Most of Taekwondo players have suffered from injuries, these injuries sometimes are dangerous. These injuries are more common among male and semi-professional players. Coaches and players must emphasize on warming-up and stretching before the training/ competitions and cooling-down after, that will help to reduce the rate and severity of the injuries. In addition to that, awareness compaing among the players will help the palyers to become more careful during training and competitions sessions.

ABSTRACT Introduction The increased number of people who choose running as a form of exercise has been associated with a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries. Objectives To determine the prevalence and the factors that could be correlated with injuries among amateur runners in Recife, in the State of Pernambuco (PE), Brazil. Methods An observational, cross-sectional study, in which 300 (three hundred) amateur runners answered a social demographic questionnaire, as well as questions about training characteristics, footstrike and landing pattern, and history of running injuries. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, the student-t test to compare means, and the Chi-squared to compare prevalences. Results The prevalence of injuries amongst runners in Recife-PE was 58.5% (n= 175), the knee being the most commonly injured site (37.3%). In both groups - runners with and without injuries – there was a higher number of male runners, with 72.4% and 72.6% respectively. There was no difference in relation to the weekly frequency of running between the groups (p<0.63). However, runners with a history of injuries ran around 7 kmh a week more than the runners without injuries (p<0.03). A neutral footstrike (F=0.87; p=0.99) and hindfoot landing (F=4.13; p=0.90) were the most reported running patterns in both groups. It was found that wear was the main criterion used for changing running shoes in both groups (F = 8.35, p = 0.4). Conclusion There was a high prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries among amateur runners in Recife-PE. Among the factors associated with the injuries, one variable was significant: a higher weekly volume of training. Level of evidence II; Study type: Cross-sectional study.

SummaryStudy aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with pain and musculoskeletal injuries in Brazilian kickboxers.Material and methods: This is a cross-sectional study composed of a population of kickboxers from the academies affiliated to the Rio Grande do Norte State Federation of Kickboxing. The study was conducted by means of a questionnaire regarding their demographic data, graduation and level of participation in the modality, routines of procedures during training, and pain/ discomfort regions and respective intensities. In addition, the characteristics, types, and regions of the injuries were evaluated. Results: Of the 132 kickboxers included, a high prevalence of pain (84.09%) was observed and associated with the female gender (OR = 3.62; CI95% 1.29–10.13) and body mass index (OR = 0.80; CI95% 0.71–0.91). In addition, the kickboxers presented a moderate percentage of injuries (40.91%) that were associated with longer training time (OR = 5.82; CI95% 2.68–12.61) and contact level in the training sessions (OR = 3.53; CI95% 1.85–6.72).Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in kickboxers, mainly associated with female gender and with lower body mass. Musculoskeletal injuries were moderately prevalent in kickboxers who trained more than one hour per session and with an intense contact level.
