Mangroves create unique ecological environments, furnishing a habitat opportunity for many species. The majority of published information on mangrove sponges comes from the Caribbean while few data are available from Indo-Pacific mangrove sponges. In general, species diversity of sponges in mangroves is lower than adjacent subtidal habitats in both the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific. The aim of this study is to report the first data about sponge species diversity of two mangrove forests from Bangka Island (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) and to describe a new sponge species associated with the mangroves. The survey found 19 species, belonging to 11 families and 15 genera; the samples were collected on mangrove trunks, on the roots or on the surrounding bottom. The majority of the species are typical of coral reef but two of them have been previously found only in lagoons or in mangrove habitats. These new data enlarge our knowledge about Indonesian sponges diversity and suggest the urgency to consider Indonesian mangroves as an important but underestimated element in coral reef ecological dynamics.

The bivalve anadara grandis is one of the most abundant shells which are easy to find in Indonesian waters. The number of clams consumed is directly proportional to the amount of clamshell waste, which the most part is only disposed into waste. Coral reef has a very important purpose in supporting activities in coastal areas. Artificial reef is a structure that has aim to restore the biological purpose coral reef that have been damaged. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of the use of normal concrete (made from sand, cement dan splits only) than clamshell mixture as materials of artificial reef.  A field research was conducted in Pasir Putih, Situbondo, with visual descriptive method (transect with a quadrant of 25 x 25cm) and underwater camera as an aid to facilitate the observation. During the 4-month observation of the drowning, nine types of biotas were found in attaching, with the dominant biota attached to these artificial reef were bivalves, barnacles, and bryozoan. Results show that the total number and density of calcareous biota attached on clamshell concretes are higher than those of standard concretes. So, it could be concluded that the concrete reefs made of clamshells resulted in attachment of biota slightly higher than it of normal concretes and the benefits of both materials can form the coral reef ecosystem well. In particular, the use of artificial reef with a mixture of clamshells is better than normal concrete because its more effective for algae attachment and cheaper because  low budget due to the material availability of clamshell presently as damage and wastes in coastal area.

ABSTRACTFisheries development in Indonesia, especially in North Sulawesi, is to optimize the utilization of resources through a comprehensively integrated approach and accommodate a variety of interests, such as fishermen, national economy, sustainability of marine resources and fisheries, and environmental balance and sustainability. For fisheries policy preparation, adequate information on fish resources is required. One of the fish resources in Buyat Bay area is little tuna (Auxis thazard). This study aimed to evaluate the little tuna resource and fishing season in the waters of Buyat Bay and surrounding areas. The fishing area in Buyat Bay waters is 4.88 km2. The little tuna biomass of Buyat Bay is 0.486 ton/km2. Monthly average catch was 0.7 tons relative to the maximum sustainable catch of 2.37 ton/month, and then the exploitation rate was 29.59%. This meant that the catch landed in Buyat Pante was lower than the monthly maximum sustainable catch. The catch is allowed at 80% of the maximum sustainable catch, which amounted to 1.89 tons/month. Tuna fishing season in Buyat Bay occurred in March and then from May to September following the pattern of the two-month season of the year for high density.ABSTRAKPembangunan perikanan di Indonesia, khususnya di Sulawesi Utara adalah mengoptimalkan pemanfaatan sumberdaya melalui pendekatan yang terintegrasi dengan komprehensif dan mengakomodasi berbagai kepentingan, yaitu: nelayan, ekonomi nasional, kelestarian sumberdaya kelautan dan perikanan, serta keseimbangan dan kelestarian lingkungan.

Artificial Patch Reef (APR) have been applied as a new method for Biodiversity Conservation Program at Panjang Island, Jepara since 2015. Previous study suggested that design and location of artificial reefs installation affected to abundance of reef fishes, associated with the artificial reef.  This study aims to investigated community structure of reef fishes associated to artificial patch reef comparing to reef fishes in nearby natural reefs. Assessment of coral reef condition on two habitats were conducted on July 2019, after 4 years deployment.  The results show that artificial patch reefs with a percentage of live coral cover are less than half of natural coral reefs, and have succeeded in increasing the abundance of reef fish with nearly the same density and community structure resembling reef fish in natural coral reefs. The similarity in community structure of the two habitats is probably due to the similarity in habitat type and morphology of the hard corals. The results indicate that Artificial Patch Reef (APR) reefs have increased the coral cover of Acropora branching and resulted in increased reef fish abundance which is compatible with reef fish communities associated with natural coral reefs around it.

Kata kunci: Diversitas Echinodermata, Pantai Meras, Sulawesi Utara Abstract Echinoderms have important role in coral reef ecosystems as part of the food webs. They may be herbivores, carnivores, and/or omnivores. Coral reefs destruction in Meras Beach lately can threaten Echinoderms. There was little information about Echinoderms diversity of Meras Beach. Therefore, research on Echinoderms diversity needs to be done on the Meras Beach, Bunaken District, North Sulawesi. Sampling was carried out at each location at the lowest tide. There were 3 line transects (each 100 meters) located vertically from the shoreline towards the sea. The square plots (1 x 1 meter) placed distance between plots was 10 meters. The results showed that Echinoderms occupied different habitat i.e. sea grass, sand, live and/or coral reefs. Total species found 8 species belong to members of the 3 classes. Asteroidea Class (starfish),  Echinoidea Class and Holothuroidea were respectively 3 species, 4 species and 1 species. Echinoderms diversity on the Meras Beach were low to moderate with Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H ') was 0.48 to 1.31. Understanding coral recruitment is important as increasing of regional decline of coral reef worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the spatial and temporal coral recruitment patterns around reef sites in Balok coastal waters and Bidong Island, Malaysia. Recruitment density was determined by quantifying number of coral recruits settled on the terra-cotta tiles and artificial reef settlement plates. In Balok coastal waters, a total of 159 coral recruits were counted with 0.09 ± 0.03 n/m2 mean recruitment density per plate, while in Bidong Island, a total of 319 coral recruits were counted with 0.19 ± 0.02 n/m2 mean recruitment density per plate. Coral recruits were dominated by genus Pocillopora followed by Stylopora and Seriatopora in Bidong. Meanwhile in Balok, genus Platygyra was dominant coral recruits followed by Porites and Fungia. Additionally, minor spawning event was predicted in Balok coastal waters in September due to increase number of Platygyra coral. Recruitment density varied significantly between locations, types of settlement plates and plate’s orientation at both study areas. Current findings highlighted the significant use of artificial reef plates to increase the chances of larval settlement. This research also provides important information in assessing coral resilience towards different environmental conditions between coastal and sheltered reef areas.
