The main purpose of this study is to conduct a survey on the detailed Water Balance of Paulínia Refinery, focusing all process units so as to allow its use as data basis for the management of water resources that are consumed there in different forms (natural water, process water, for the fire prevention system, drinkable, demineralized, steam etc,). The main result shows that 61.5% of the total water collected by the refinery does not reach the effluents treatment station, that is, losses occur during the processes, mainly due to the evaporation in the cooling towers, an intrinsic process factor. Another important identified aspect refers to the relation between equipment maintenance and the consequent water waste. Once these problems are solved, it is estimated that the collection could be reduced by 6.4% and the effluents generation by 16.9%.

The synthesis chitosan modified by N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF) grafted β-CD (CTS), adsorption experiments of lanthanide ions, a new type water treatment agent, are discussed in this paper. First, the chitosan was modified by DMF, and then β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was grafted onto chitosan skeleton by epoxy chloropropane. The effects of temperature, pH value, adsorption time on adsorption content were studied. The water treatment agent have a high lanthanide adsorption rate up to 98% compared to chitosan, b-CD and chitosan derivative bearing β-cyclodextrin.

Due to the increasing temperature in water injection system, scales are sediments that are firmly attached on the metal surface in the industrial equipment. These scales, including calcium and ferric oxide precipitations, can cause heat transfer problems. A non-phosphorus water treatment agent APES/AA/AMPS was synthesized by acrylic acid (AA), ammonium allylpolyethoxy sulphate (APES) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) with the solution of ammonium persulfate as an initiator. The properties of scale inhibition and dispersion of water treatment agent APES/AA/AMPS were studied by using the commonly used standard test methods. The results showed that APES/AA/AMPS had excellent scale inhibition and dispersion performance. The performance of APES/AA/AMPS on strontium sulfate was 93.3% at the dosage of 9 mg·L−1. When the concentration was 4 mg·L−1, the dispersion of iron oxide was optimal according to the solution transmittance of 13.7%. The morphology and crystallinity changes of strontium sulfate in scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction showed that the mechanism of the inhibition on strontium sulfate is adsorption.

Can new types of anti-scaling devices prevent scaling on condensing pipes in industrial cooling condensers and supersede conventional water treatment? To examine this question a test method has been developed, test rigs have been built and different kinds of anti-scale devices have been tested. As cooling towers are based on an open-air system with evaporation of water they will have higher demands on the effectiveness of the anti-scale devices compared to the closed systems which are typical drinking water systems in buildings. The test method is based on an open-air system. The rigs are mobile and can be used to give an indication of whether it is possible to treat the local water with an anti-scale device. The result of the test is a scaling rate and a germination time. In addition to these tests the anti-scale devices have been tested in the field at cooling condensers.
