First finding of Greeffiella Cobb, 1922 (Nematoda, Desmoscolecida) in the Black Sea

The first finding of the genus Greeffiella Cobb 1922 (Greeffiellinae, Desmoscolecidae) in the Black Sea is presented. Two mature females were collected in Northwestern Shelf of Crimea in strongly silted fine sand with detritus at a water depth of 56 m. Greeffiella sp. is described and illustrated. The absence of males in the collections does not allow the authors to present it as a new species for science or to identify it as one of the known species of the genus Greeffiella. Black sea specimen is distinguished from the other known species of the genus Greeffiella with the presence of 8 pairs of thicker specific setae along the body, the basis of which looks like a small lamina, but without hairs, which was previously described for G. pierri Schrage & Gerlach, 1975 and G. australis Schrage & Gerlach, 1975. The short esophagus at the base has two salivary glands and a cardia. Cardia has not been mentioned before for the known species of the genus Greeffiella.

Microlaimus sergeevae sp. n. is described and illustrated from the Crimea shelf of the Black Sea. It is characterized by the 1301–1728 μm long body; cuticle with distinct annuli; spicules 34–37 μm long, curved; gubernacular apophyses 20–25 μm long, surrounding distal end of spicules; criptocyrcular amphidial fovea 7–8 μm in diameter; cervical setae present; four submedian rows of pores spreading along the whole body length, and eight precloacal supplements in males. The new species morphologically resembles M. gerlachi Wieser 1954, M. paraborealis Allgen 1940a and M. kaurii Wieser 1954, but differs from them by the length of cephalic setae, size of the body, presence of cervical setae, shape of the gubernacular apophyses, eight tubular precloacal supplements and submedian rows of pores spreading along the whole body length. M. sergeevae sp. n. differs from M. gerlachi by having a smaller amphidial fovea, shorter spicules and gubernacular apophyses. The new species differs from M. paraborealis by having larger value of c. It differs from M. kaurii by having longer spicules and larger values of c and b.

A new species of the genus Cimmerites Jeannel, 1928, C. maximovitchi sp. nov., is described from the Akhunskaya Cave and Labirintovaya Cave, both located in the Akhun Karst Massif on the Black Sea Coast of the West Caucasus (Krasnodar Territory, Russia). The new species is rather isolated within the genus Cimmerites and occupies an intermediate position between species related to C. kryzhanovskii Belousov, 1998 and species close to C. vagabundus Belousov, 1998. Though both C. maximovitchi sp. nov. and C. kryzhanovskii are still known only from caves, these species are quite similar in their life form to other members of the genus which are all true endogean species.

Two New Families and a New Species of Myxosporeans (Myxozoa, Myxosporea) of the Mediterranean and Black Sea FishesDescriptions of two new families — Polysporoplasmidae fam. n. (Syn. Sphaerosporidae Davis, 1917 in Sitja-Bobadilla, Alvarez-Pellitero, 1995) and Gadimyxidae fam. n. (syn. Parvicapsulidae Schulman, 1953 in Kie et al., 2007), and one new species of myxosporeans —Gadimyxa ovalesp. n. — parasites of fishes of the Mediterranean and the Black Seas are presented. Species of the genus Gadimyxa is found for the first time in the Black Sea.

The present paper deals with the diversity of nephtyid polychaetes (Nephtyidae) from the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Three species belonging to two genera (Micronephthys and Nephtys) were found in the Black Sea (coast of Turkey) and six species belonging to three genera (Inermonephtys, Micronephthys and Nephtys) were found in the Sea of Marmara. The material includes two species new to science, Inermonephtys turcica n. sp. and Nephtys sinopensis n. sp., and a species record (Nephtys kersivalensis McIntosh, 1908) new to the Sea of Marmara’s marine fauna. Nephtys sinopensis n. sp. is mainly characterized by having 1–4 geniculate chaetae in the postacicular position of the parapodia; digitiform antennae, palps, and ventral cirri at chaetiger 1 with swollen tips; small and cirriform branchiae present from chaetiger 4 to the end of the body; poorly developed parapodial prechaetal lamellae in median and posterior chaetigers and long ventral cirri along the body. Inermonephtys turcica n. sp. is mainly characterized by having cushion-like palps with digitiform tips; well developed neuropodial postchaetal lamellae; barred chaetae in preacicular position of the anterior and median parapodia; and branchiae first appearing between chaetiger 3 and 13 (depending on body size).

Cymbasoma sinopense sp. nov. is described from an adult female collected off the Sinop coast, in the southern Black Sea, Turkey. This is the first species of this genus recorded from the Black Sea coast of Turkey. The new species is a member of the widespread Cymbasoma longispinosum species-group, and it closely resembles C. chelemense Suárez-Morales & Escamilla, 1997 from the Yucatan Peninsula and C. californiense Suárez-Morales & Palomares-García, 1999 from the Gulf of California. This species can be distinguished by a combination of subtle characters, including the body proportions, the structure and armature of the fifth legs, the ornamentation of the genital somite, and the relative length of the ovigerous spines. A previous report of C. longispinosum from the northern Black Sea probably represented a misidentified record of C. sinopense sp. nov. The Mediterranean reports refer to a species that is different from the one of the Black Sea. Comparative comments and data including the main taxonomic characters of members of the Cymbasoma longispinosum species-group are presented. Overall, it is confirmed that records of this species from different geographic areas should be revised carefully because they could represent undescribed species. A key for the identification of the females of the currently known species assigned to the Cymbasoma longispinosum species-group is included.

Between October 2013 and July 2014, 40 polyclad specimens were collected during the systematic sampling of mussel beds along the coast of the Sinop Peninsula (Western Black Sea). Six species were identified, including a new Cryptocelis species. Cryptocelis sinopae sp. nov. is characterized by possessing a prostatic vesicle lined with a ridged fold in its anterior end and the presence of two secretory glandular folds in the distal dorsal wall of male atrium. Additionally, new records of Echinoplana celerrima Haswell, 1907 and Leptoplana mediterranea (Bock, 1913) are reported for the Black Sea and Turkey; and Leptoplana tremellaris (Müller OF, 1774) and Prosthiostomum siphunculus Delle Chiaje, 1822 for the coast of the Black Sea of Turkey. A short description of the reproductive behaviour of Pleioplana okusi Bulnes, Kalkan and Karahan, 2009 and Cryptocelis sinopae sp. nov. will be also provided.

The genus Crinitodiscus (Uropodidae) is re-described and its description supplemented with additional new data. A new species, Crinitodiscus ozkani sp. n., is described from specimens collected from the Black Sea region of Turkey. All life stages of the new species are described, and an identification key for the adults and nymphs of the four known species of Crinitodiscus is presented.

In this paper we describe a new genus and a new species of Chiridotidae based on specimens collected in shallow water off the South-eastern Brazilian coast. Gymnopipina ikamiaba gen. nov. et sp. nov. is characterized by the complete absence of dermal ossicles in the body, and it differs from the other ossicleless apodids in the number of tentacles and of Polian vesicles, and in the morphology of the calcareous ring. Although not formally tested with a phylogenetic framework, apodids have apparently lost their dermal ossicles multiple times. If these reversions hold true, Gymnopipina gen. nov. represents the fourth independent loss of dermal ossicles in the class Holothuroidea. An identification key to the Brazilian apodid species is also provided.

No living Opilioacarus species have been described from Europe for more than a century since the first finding and species description in the early twentieth century. Using the material deposited in Museo Civico di Storia Naturale of Verona, Italy, it was possible to identify and describe a new Opilioacarus species and review the genus diagnosis, using the shape of setae d and setation of the preanal segment. The new species is also briefly compared with the other Opilioacarus species; Opilioacarus italicus (With, 1904) is considered a nomen dubium.
