Abstract Objective: To identify strategies used in the oral health care of elderly persons with Alzheimer's disease in the home. Method: an exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach to collecting and analyzing data was performed. Data was collected through interviews with 30 caregivers and analyzed by the content analysis technique. Results: The majority of subjects were female, daughters of the elderly person, university graduates and aged 32-77 years. The strategies identified were grouped into categories according to the participation of the caregiver: does not participate in care actions or oral health assessments; reminds the elderly person about oral hygiene, demonstrates movements and assists with some procedures; directly carries out actions of care. Conclusion: The strategies employed are related to the degree of dependence of the elderly person, as the caregiver acts based on the need for oral health care and the difficulties in carrying out such care.

Aging is a physiological process that leads to both biological and psychological changes. The brain undergoes structural changes as a part of aging. According to the investigator's best knowledge and based on the extensive review, no structured study was conducted in India to test the effectiveness of cognitive training program. Hence, the present study was conducted to test the effectiveness of a home-based training program on select outcomes. A total of 314 elderly participants were recruited for the study after obtaining the written informed consent. After recruiting, the participants were randomly grouped into two groups, that is control and intervention groups, with 157 participants in each group. The intervention was administered to the experimental group. The present study results suggest that the home-based cognitive training program is effective in improving cognitive functions and daily life activities. The study recommends further detailed and multi-centered studies in this area to recommend the implementation of the program in the management of the cognitive impairments of the elderly.

Abstract The patient-experience is an emerging concept in research and medico-social action, and its consideration in the development of care pathways is encouraged (e.g. ’Ma Santé 2020’ national plan in France). In addition, the patient-experience of the elderly subject has specific dimensions and his collection presents difficulties insufficiently explored. PAERPA (elderly people at risk of loss of autonomy), French national experiment for the care of frail elderly patients, offers an opportunity to return to these issues. The objective of this study, mandated by the ARS of Hauts-de-France, was to collect the experience of the elderly PAERPA. Faced with the difficulties of current methodologies, several methodological approaches have been combined: semi-structured individual interviews face-to-face or by telephone, dedicated questionnaire. In addition, a specific grid was developed to explore the home-based patient experience, including seven dimensions of the patient-experience identified in the literature. This study was conducted in the second half of 2018 (3 years and a half of the start of the project). The experience of 43 seniors and / or caregivers was collected. Patients PAERPA are generally satisfied with their care but they have difficulties in making the link between their care and the actors and devices specific to PAEPRA experimentation. Human connection and listening seem essential for the elderly patients included. Other dimensions, such as stakeholder coordination, remain controversial and more difficult to grasp. Methodologically, the particular situation of seniors, such as sensory or memory disorders, requires a major adaptation of the survey tools. In PAERPA, the patient-experience of the frail elderly subject passes mainly through the feeling of a human connection. Current methodologies do not seem fully adapted to collectively capture the experience of frail elderly patients. Key messages Evaluating the patient-experience to improve the health pathway is possible and necessary through a qualitative collection, regularly, in itinere. The peculiarities of older people often require the participation of carers, who need to be involved in the assessment of the patient-experience and raised awareness.

In this study, we implemented a four-stage service design process to analyze the home-based interaction behavior between elderly and other family members to identify hidden needs for strengthening inter-generational relationships and creating harmony as a turning point for new product innovations in home-based interactive devices. In the demand exploration stage and demand definition stage, context inquiry and service modeling were applied to understand the intergenerational relationship between the elderly and other family members and the potential needs and expectations of family interactions. The overall demand mainly includes four points: (1) the improvement in inter-generational relationships requires the active care of family members, (2) the improvement in inter-generational emotional interactions requires accurate mastery of parental responsibilities, (3) the chairing design of the living room can be used to understand and document parental life practice, and (4) big data parental lifestyle records can be analyzed. Based on hidden demands, a smart care interactive system (SCIS) with a chair was designed for improving emotional interactions and parent-child interaction between the elderly and other family members. The results of the verification experiment show that the smart care interactive chair (SCIC) can significantly help the elderly with intergenerational relationships in terms of emotional support and parent-child interactions. The family emotional support and parent-child interactions are the foundation of the sustainability of family relationships and the cornerstone of social stability.

ABSTRACTBackground: The study has a dual objective: (1) to investigate the extent to which, and how and to whom, elderly people gave warning (according to the definition of the term given by the American Association of Suicidology) prior to suicide; (2) to investigate how these warnings were perceived by the recipients of them, and what reactions the recipients had to the warnings. Methods: This is a psychological autopsy study based on qualitative interviews. Sixty-three informants were interviewed about 23 suicides by individuals aged over 65 in Norway. The informants comprised relatives, general practitioners (GPs) and home-based care nurses. In general, the analysis of the interviews follows the systematic text condensation method. Results: The interviews contained four main themes regarding reactions to the warnings: “not taken seriously,” “helplessness,” “exhaustion,” and “acceptance.” A total of 14 of the 23 elderly people gave warning before the suicides occurred. The warnings were given to relatives (11), home-based care nurses (5), and GPs (2).Conclusions: Even though more than half of the elderly people had given warning (most frequently to relatives) before the suicide, the warnings did not initiate preventive measures. Together with passive attitudes, the lack of recognition of both the risk of suicide and the opportunities for treatment prevented possible measures being implemented. The paper discusses the grounds for the reactions as well as how suicide warnings given by elderly people can be taken seriously.

IntroductionPopulation aging is an issue increasingly gaining more prominence, as evidenced by the number of inquiries regarding the “problems” that this entails for society. This leads to a need to understand the role of caregiver for the elderly as the central figure of support in old age.AimThe purpose of this study was to describe formal caregivers’ perceptions of working conditions, difficulties and factors associated with quality of care in a Portuguese home-based care for elderly.MethodsThe participants were 8 formal caregivers whose profession falls under the categories of Direct Action Helper and Auxiliary Workers. The data were collected through individual face-to-face interviews and analysed using a content analysis following Bardin's method.ResultsThe results show that the sample is female, aged from 32 to 53 years, with a professional exercise time between 8 and 16 years. Regarding the main conclusions of our research, we can say that our group of participants has a strong sense of team work which contributes to avoid situations of physical and emotional exhaustion; mostly caregivers can separate their personal and professional lives; there are some difficulties in communication between the caregivers and the elderly, however the most difficult situations are usually overcome due to the caregiver's understanding of the characteristics of institutionalized elderly; the matter of death is frequently seen as the most difficult situation to face.ConclusionsThe caregivers should have an awareness of the importance of kindness and respect, supporting positive thoughts and help the older people to retain control over their lives.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.
