Abstract The need for superior design tools has lead to the development of better and more complex computer aided design programs. Two of the more important new developments in application tools being investigation are Object Oriented Languages, and HyperMedia. Object Oriented Languages allow the development of CAD tools where the parts being designed and the design procedures specified are conceptualized as objects. This allows for the development of design aids that are non-procedural and more readily manipulated by the user trying to accomplish a design task. HyperMedia allows for the easy inclusion of many different types of data, such as design charts and graphs, into the tool that are normally difficult to include in design tools programmed with more conventional programming languages. This paper explores the development of a computer aided design tool for the design of a single stage gear box using the development HyperCard® environment and the HyperTalk® programming language. The resulting program provides a user friendly interface, the ability to handle several kinds of design information including graphic and textual, and a non-procedural design tool to help the user design simple, one stage gear boxes. Help facilities in the program make it suitable for undergraduate instruction in a machine elements design course.

Abstract A fatal accident occurred when a right angle gear box on an auger elevator disintegrated freeing the outboard end of a rotating PTO shaft. The tractor, acting as a stationary power source, flailed the PTO shaft which then struck and killed a farmer. No similar occurrences have been reported for the nearly 2000 similar units which have been used for over a decade. This paper studies a number of fundamental failure modes in order to determine which failure modes created the accident. Systematic analysis showed that the accident was caused by unusual misuse of the product. Known safety control concepts do not preclude this unforeseeable event.

Fault vibration signals of gear box are faint shock and are hardly extracted, which bring a big difficulty for diagnosis. This paper mainly introduces the basic principle of the resonance demodulation technique and its application study in the gear box’s fault diagnosis. The developed resonance demodulation technique can effectively extract the fault features from complex vibration signals through the resonance demodulation technique according to the vibration features of the gear box, and improve the equipments’ fault diagnosis precision.

Perusahaan industri alat utama sistem pertahanan (alutsista) adalah perusahaan yang memproduksi produk militer dan produk komersial, Salah satu mesin yang ada di perusahaan industri alutsista adalah mesin pengaduk SAS (bahan pokok) gas air mata. Mesin ini berfungsi mencampurkan SAS gas air mata yang menghasilkan bahan pokok gas air mata yang homogen. Masalah yang timbul dalam pembuatan bahan pokok gas air mata ini untuk mencapai hasil yang homogen adalah masih manual, yaitu dengan pencampuran bahan pokok secara langsung oleh operator. Akibatnya sistem produksi tidak bisa bekerja secara optimal karena memerlukan waktu yang lama, kapasitas berkurang dan resiko bahaya lebih tinggi terhadap operatornya. Demi terwujudnya proses yang aman dan homogen maka diperlukan perancangan mesin pengaduk SAS gas air mata. Perancangan ini menggunakan metode Pahl and Beitz. Proses perancangan sistem yang digunakan secara garis besar terdiri dari tahap-tahap : Penjabaran Tugas, Perancangan dengan Konsep, Perancangan Wujud, dan Perancangan Secara Terperinci. Dengan mengikuti alur tahapan perancangan, didapatkan 5 varian desain yang dievaluasi mengikuti 9 kriteria. Hasil evaluasi menjadi dasar untuk memilih varian 2 sebagai desain terbaik untuk mesin pengaduk, yaitu menggunakan tangki horisontal, pengaduk screw, transmisi gear box dan penggerak motor listrik. Analisis teknis terhadap varian ini menghasilkan faktor keamanan 93,86 sehingga dapat dinyatakan layak dan aman untuk beroperasi pada kapasitas produksi 360 ton/shift. Kata Kunci : Alutsista, SAS, Gas Air Mata, Metode Perancangan Pahl and Beitz, Homogen.
