During pregnancy, anatomical and functional changes occur in all organs and systems of the body. The family doctor evaluates the morphofunctional changes in the reno-urinary system throughout the pregnancy. These morphological and functional changes often have no clinical expression. Morphofunctional changes in the reno-urinary system cause changes in laboratory tests results and are the basis for the appearance of urinary tract symptoms. The family doctor has an important role in assessing the pregnant woman, and in diagnosing renal pathology early. Although the pregnant woman has an increased risk of developing various urinary tract diseases, frequently, under active monitoring and conservative treatment, the evolution can be favorable.

Healthy mother and healthy baby are foremost aim of antenatal care. Progressive anatomical and physiological changes during pregnancy are not only confined to the genital organs however within other systems of the body too, some may be felt as discomfort by a pregnant woman. A pregnant woman having pain or burning micturition, fever with chills, nausea, vomiting and cloudy urine having bad smell can be diagnosed as having Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). UTI is most common bacterial infection encountered during Pregnancy and troublesome to the woman suffering from it. Pyelonephritis, premature delivery and other risk such as PROM, IUGR etc. can be the long term result of UTI hence prompt attention is requisite. In the present study Gud-Amalaka Yoga has been tried in 15 patients for evaluation of its clinical efficacy and adverse / side effects if any. It was observed that Gud-Amalaka Yoga showed better results (25% patients were moderately improved, 75% patients were mildly improved). None of the patient reported any adverse effect during or after the treatment.

An investigation is presented of 87 Danish infants born to 62 drugaddicted mothers who had been pregnant altogether 145 times. In Denmark all pregnant women are offered prophylactic examinations, sometimes by their family doctor, sometimes by the midwife and in special cases by the obstetric clinic. Despite the fact that this antenatal care is considered especially important, not least for the addicted, pregnant woman, these offers were only poorly utilised. There were four perinatal deaths, of which two were stillbirths, further 3 infants died later as a result of abuse or neglect. After discharge from hospital only 43 infants lived at home with their mothers. The rest were either voluntarily or compulsorily placed with the mothers' parents, in family care, or in a childrens home. Only 2 infants were adopted. After their return home from the labour wards the mothers took little advantage of the prophylactic paediatric examinations and the vaccination program which are offered free by the family doctor to all children of pre-school age. The same was true regarding domiciliary visits by the health visitor.

Studies show a strong association between dementia and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The aim of this study was to investigate whether LUTS are a risk factor for cognitive impairment. We enrolled 50-year-old and older subjects with LUTS (LUTS[+]) (n=6801) and controls without LUTS (LUTS[−]) (n=20,403) from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database. LUTS, dementia, and other confounding factors are defined by International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification Codes. Participants were recruited from 2000 to 2004 and then followed up until death or the end of 2011. The outcome was the onset of dementia, which was assessed using Poisson regression analysis, Cox hazards models, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. The incidence of dementia was significantly higher in the LUTS[+]group than in the LUTS[−]group (124.76 versus 77.59/1000 person-years). The increased risk of dementia related to LUTS remained significant after adjustment for potential confounders (adjusted hazard ratio (AHR): 1.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.47–1.76,P<0.0001) and higher than that related to cerebrovascular disease (AHR: 1.43, 95% CI 1.26–1.61,P<0.0001). The outcome suggests the need for early screening and appropriate intervention to help prevent cognitive impairment of patients with LUTS.
