SummaryThe holding power and holding power per mm bone width of 4.5 mm and 5.5 mm cortical and 6.5 mm cancellous orthopaedic screws were obtained by tensile load-to-failure studies in excised metacarpal and metatarsal bones of young female Holstein calves. Holding power and holding power per mm bone width of 6.5 mm orthopaedic screws were significantly greater than those of 4.5 and 5.5 mm orthopaedic screws in the diaphysis and metaphysis. Significant differences were not detected between holding power and holding power per mm bone width of 4.5 and 5.5 mm orthopaedic screws. The holding power was not different between metacarpi and metatarsi. The limiting factor in all tests of holding power was the shear strength of the bone. We found that 6.5 mm orthopaedic screws have the greatest holding power in the metacarpal and metatarsal bones of young calves.This study compares the holding power of 4.5 mm and 5.5 mm cortical and 6.5 mm cancellous orthopaedic screws in excised metacarpal and metatarsal bones from young female Holstein calves. We found that 6.5 mm orthopaedic screws have the greatest holding power.

SummaryThe purpose of the study was to determine and to compare the in vitro pullout strength of 5.5 mm cortical versus 6.5 mm cancellous bone screws inserted in the diaphysis and metaphysis of foal third metacarpal (MCIII) bones in threaded 4.5 mm cortical bone screw insertion holes that were then overdrilled with a 4.5 mm drill bit. This information is relevant to the selection of a replacement screw if a 4.5 mm cortical screw is stripped during orthopaedic surgery. In vitro pullout tests were performed in two independent cadaver studies, each consisting of 12 foal MCIII bones. Two 4.5 mm cortical screws were placed either in the mid-diaphysis (study 1) or distal metaphysis (study 2) of MCIII bones. The holes were then overdrilled with a 4.5 mm bit and had either a 5.5 mm cortical or a 6.5 mm cancellous screw inserted; screw pullout tests were performed at a rate of 0.04 mm/s until screw or bone failure occurred.The bone failed in all of the tests in the diaphyseal and metaphyseal bone. The holding power for 6.5 mm cancellous screws was significantly (p <0.05) greater than for 5.5 mm cortical screws in both the diaphysis and metaphysis. There was not any difference in the holding power of screws in either the diaphysis or the metaphysis between proximal and distal screw holes.If a 4.5 mm cortical bone screw strips in MCIII diaphyseal or metaphyseal bone of foals, a 6.5 mm cancellous screw would provide greater holding power than a 5.5 mm cortical screw.In order to provide information regarding selection of a replacement screw if a 4.5 mm cortical screw is stripped, the in vitro pullout strength was determined for 5.5 mm cortical and 6.5 mm cancellous screws inserted in third metacarpal diaphyseal and metaphyseal bone of foals in which threaded 4.5 mm cortical bone screw insertion holes had been overdrilled with a 4.5 mm bit. The holding power of the 6.5 mm cancellous screw was significantly greater than the 5.5 mm cortical screw in both the diaphysis and metaphysis of foal third metacarpal bone. Thus, it appears that if a 4.5 mm cortical screw is stripped during orthopaedic surgery in foals, a 6.5 mm cancellous screw would provide superior holding power.

SummaryFemoral capital physeal fractures have been successfully repaired using 7.0 mm cannulated screws. The holding power of 7.0 mm cannulated screws was compared to the holding power of 5.5 mm cortical screws and 6.5 mm cancellous screws using paired bovine femoral heads. The 7.0 mm cannulated screw’s holding power was superior to the 6.5 mm cancellous screw and similar to that of the 5.5 mm cortical screw.When placed in the bovine femoral head, 7.0 mm cannulated screws have holding power greater than 6.5 mm cancellous screws and similar to 5.5 mm cortical screws.

Bolivia’s natural resources have served as a ‘mechanism of trade’ mobilized by competing interest groups to build coalitions, create political pacts, and negotiate political settlements in which dominant actors attempt to win over those resistant to a particular vision of development and/or governance. These pacts and settlements are revisited constantly, reflecting the weak and fragmented power of the central state and of the elite and persistent tensions between national and subnational elites. Ideas about, and modes of, natural resource governance have been central to periods of instability and stability, and to significant periods of political rupture. The period since 2006 has been characterized by a stable settlement involving an alliance between the presidency, his dominant party, and national social movements. This settlement is sustained through bargains with parts of the economic elite and subnational actors with holding power, as well as through ideas of resource nationalism and state-led developmentalism.

Aiming at the defects of fault diagnosis in the traditional method for sucker rod pump system, a new method based on support vector machine (SVM) pump fault diagnosis is proposed. Through studying the theory of invariant moment and the shape characteristics of pump indicator diagram, seven invariant moments is extracted from the indicator diagram as a pumping unit well condition of the characteristic parameters. Then these parameters are pretreatment, and it makes up seven eigenvector which are regarded as the input eigenvector of the SVM. The experiment indicates that the method can not only detect the fault of the pumping oil well but also can recognize the fault type of it, which is very effective for safety protection and fault diagnosis of the pumping oil.

This paper tackles the relationship between Islam and the state in light of the ongoing revolutions. It focuses on two perspectives: the Islamists' claim that the Shari'a and not the umma (community) are the source of legitimacy in the evolving regimes; and that it is the duty of the state to protect religion and apply the Shari'a. The main disadvantage of these propositions is that they preclude the Umma both from political power and Shari'a, thus pitting it against these two assets which become manipulated to its disadvantage by those holding power. On the other hand, an open-minded and reformist Islamic perspective believes in people regaining the prerogative to rule themselves, guided by their intellect and the public good. The main call for the Arab uprisings is to quit political Islam, which seems to be the major threat to religion, and dangerously divisive for societies.
