This paper addresses the systematics of the New Zealand spiders of the family Malkaridae. Malkarids are small araneoid spiders that live primarily in the leaf litter and mosses of temperate and tropical wet forests in Australia and New Zealand, with the exception of a single species in southern South America and another in New Caledonia. We treat the New Zealand species of Malkaridae that are not members of the subfamily Pararchaeinae, a monophyletic group of 11 new species that we classify in 2 new genera (Tingotingo, gen. nov. and Whakamoke, gen. nov.) and a new subfamily (Tingotinginae, subfam. nov.). We describe, diagnose, illustrate and map the distribution of specimen records of these 11 new species of New Zealand Malkaridae: Tingotingo porotiti, sp. nov., T. pouaru, sp. nov., T. tokorera, sp. nov., T. aho, sp. nov., Whakamoke orongorongo, sp. nov.; W. tarakina, sp. nov.; W. guacamole, sp. nov.; W. hunahuna, sp. nov.; W. paoka, sp. nov.; W. heru, sp. nov.; and W. rakiura, sp. nov. We also treat the phylogenetic relationships of Malkaridae and use the results of our previous work on the molecular phylogeny of Araneoidea as the bases for the classification of the family. Tingotingo, gen. nov. and Whakamoke, gen. nov. are sister clades. Tingotinginae, subfam. nov. is the sister group of the Malkarinae plus Pararchaeinae clade. We further hypothesise and discuss the morphological synapomorphies of Malkaridae, Tingotinginae, subfam. nov. and the two new genera.

This study examines the phylogeny, taxonomy, distribution and biology of the gasteruptiid subfamily Hyptiogastrinae and, at the same time, presents an overview of the family. Following a cladistic analysis of 35 discrete morphological characters, two monophyletic genera are recognised, Hyptiogaster Kieffer and Pseudofoenus s. l. Kieffer. As a consequence, the genera Aulacofoenus Kieffer, Crassifoenus Crosskey, and Eufoenus Szépligeti are synonymised with Pseudofoenus. A total of 88 species are recognised for the subfamily, 10 species of Hyptiogaster, which are restricted to mainland Australia, and 78 species of Pseudofoenus, 40 of which are described as new. Pseudofoenus has a restricted Gondwanan distribution and is found in Australia including Tasmania (65 spp.), New Guinea and New Britain (5 spp.), the south-west Pacific (New Caledonia, New Hebrides and Fiji – 2 spp.), New Zealand (4 spp.) and South America (2 spp.). No new species have been recorded from either New Zealand or South America. Two new genera and five new species of Selachinematidae are described from the New Zealand upper continental slope (350-1240 m depth). Synonchiella rotundicauda sp. nov. is characterised by cephalic setae 0.25 cbd long, mandibles each with two pairs of hooks and two wing-like projections laterally, eight cup-shaped pre-cloacal supplements and short rounded tail. Pseudocheironchus gen. nov. is similar to Cheironchus, but differs from the latter in having a cuticle without lateral differentiation, cephalic setae only slightly longer than the outer labial sensillae, and a posterior buccal cavity with three equal mandibles. Pseudocheironchus ingluviosus gen. et sp. nov. is characterised by mandibles with eight blunt teeth, multispiral amphideal fovea with five turns, and a short rounded tail. Males of this new species with 17-19 cup-shaped pre-cloacal supplements. Males of the genus Cobbionema are described for the first time; C. trigamma sp. nov. is characterised by four long cephalic setae and six smaller outer labial setae in one circle, six rhabdions surrounding the anterior buccal cavity, each with two pairs of pointed projections at their posterior extremities, posterior buccal cavity widening posteriorly, with three pairs of rhabdions fused posteriorly and widening anteriorly, males with two testes pointing anteriorly and with reflexed posterior testis, and no pre-cloacal supplements. Gammanema agglutinans sp. nov. is characterised by a short, stout body often covered in adhering mucus and detritus, cuticle with minute spines, leaf-shaped somatic setae with ducts, sexual dimorphism in the shape of the amphideal fovea (loop-shaped in males and spiral in females), posterior buccal cavity with three pairs of broad, column-shaped rhabdions fused anteriorly, intestine cells with orange-brown granules, and small tubular pre-cloacal supplements. Bendiella gen. nov. is most similar to Halichoanolaimus, but differs from the latter, and all other genera of the family Selachinematidae, in having a cuticle with lateral differentiation consisting of longitudinal rows of larger dots, and from all other genera of the Choniolaiminae in lacking pre-cloacal supplements. Bendiella thalassa gen. et sp. nov. is characterised by amphideal fovea with 5.25 turns, anterior buccal cavity with twelve rhabdions, each with a pair of pointed projections at posterior extremity, posterior buccal cavity with three Y-shaped pairs of slender rhabdions fused from two thirds of distance from anterior ends, and conico-cylindrical tail.

The cumacean fauna of New Zealand has been little studied, and recent collecting on the Chatham Rise and ChallengerPlateau has yielded many new species and new genera. The first record of the family Ceratocumatidae is reported fromNew Zealand waters, Cimmerius sp. Within the Nannastacidae, there are only two previously described nannastacidspecies from New Zealand, Campylaspis rex Gerken & Ryder 2002 and Scherocumella pilgrimi (Jones 1963). The recentcollections yielded one new nannastacid genus, Aotearocumella n. gen., and 22 new nannastacid species, Aotearocumellaacantha n. sp. A. echinoseta n. sp., A. watlingi n. sp., Atlantocuma confunda n. sp., Campylaspenis tangaroae n. sp.,Campylaspis apheles n. sp., C.bituberculata n. sp., C. hatchae n. sp., C. macrosulcata n. sp., C. microsulcata n. sp., C.millsae n. sp., C. normani n. sp., C. rufus n. sp., C. schnabelae n. sp., C. sculptaspinosa n. sp., C. zealandiaensis n. sp., C.zimmeri n. sp., Procampylaspis chathamensis n. sp., P. rhypakoceros n. sp., P. rhypakos n. sp., Schizocuma delicata n. sp., and Styloptocuma gordoni n. sp. In addition, a neotype for C. rex is designated.

Two new genera and nine new species of hydroids are described based on deep-water material collected from off New Caledonia during various expeditions of the French Tropical Deep-Sea Benthos program. Caledoniana gen. nov., provisionally included in the family Sertulariidae Lamouroux, 1812, presently comprises three new species, viz. C. alata sp. nov., C. decussata sp. nov., and C. microgona sp. nov., while an additional group of three new species, is accommodated in the new sertulariid genus Solenoscyphus gen. nov.: S. candelabrum sp. nov., S. decidualis sp. nov., and S. striatus sp. nov. Furthermore, three new species of Hincksella Billard, 1918 (family Syntheciidae Marktanner-Turneretscher, 1890) are described, namely H. cornuta sp. nov., H. neocaledonica sp. nov., and H. similis sp. nov.

Stiletto-flies (Diptera: Therevidae) are highly diverse and species-rich in Australia and New Zealand, yet relatively few species have been recorded from neighbouring Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and throughout the remainder of Oceania. Indeed, in New Caledonia only a single species of the widely distributed Australasian genus Anabarhynchus Macquart (Therevinae) is previously known. Herein we describe two new agapophytine genera (i.e., Jeanchazeauiagen. nov., Calophytusgen. nov.), together comprising nine charismatic new species; this represents a first record of the subfamily from New Caledonia. The new genera and species are described and figured.

A new family of early derivative Parasitengona (Acari: Prostigmata), Allotanaupodidae fam. nov., is described from New Zealand based on adults and deutonymphs of two new genera and five new species and a new superfamily Allotanaupodoidea is erected to accommodate it. The new family is characterized by the absence of prodorsal trichobothria and sensory areas, the presence of one or two pairs of plates with multiple setae on C to PS rows of dorsal hysterosoma, the presence of only two pairs of genital acetabula in adults, and short, distally inserted palptarsus on the palptibia. The family consists of two subfamilies (Allotanaupodinae subfam. nov. and Paratanaupodinae subfam. nov.), with the former endemic to New Zealand. Allotanaupodinae subfam. nov. has a single genus, Allotanaupodus gen. nov., which is represented by three new species from New Zealand: Allotanaupodus williamsi sp. nov. (type species) from Kawau I., Auckland, Allotanaupodus orete sp. nov. from Orete Forest, Te Puia Hut and Allotanaupodus winksi sp. nov. from Mt. Messenger, Taranaki. The eyeless Paratanaupodinae subfam. nov. consists of two genera: Nanotanaupodus gen. nov. and Paratanaupodus Andre & Lelievre-Farjon, 1960. The type genus Paratanaupodus Andre & Lelievre-Farjon, 1960 was previously placed in the Tanaupodidae and is represented by a single species, Paratanaupodus insensus André & Lelievre-Farjon, 1960, from South America. Nanotanaupodus gen. nov. is represented by two new species from New Zealand: Nanotanaupodus andrei sp. nov. (type species) from Waituhi Saddle and Nanotanaupodus gracehallae sp. nov. from Orete Forest, Te Puia Hut. A key to superfamilies of terrestrial Parasitengona (post-larval stages) is provided, along with keys to subfamilies, genera and species of the new family.

With the discovery of new taxa and developments in biogeography and molecular phylogenetics, it has become clear that the diversity of Micropterigidae in the SW Pacific region is inadequately represented by the current taxonomy. The existing taxonomy implies a single lineage in this region, while an unpublished molecular analysis reveals the presence of three distinct lineages in Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand, hence the need for revision. Currently only three named species are described from eastern Australia, all placed within the genus Sabatinca Walker. This revision isolates porphyrodes Turner 1932, from northern Queensland, as a new monotypic genus Austromartyria, here recognised as a member of a diverse ‘southern sabatincoid lineage’ distributed around the Southern Hemisphere. The bulk of the fauna covered in this revision includes: S. calliplaca Meyrick 1902, together with 6 new taxa in a new Australian genus Tasmantrix; S. sterops Turner 1921 plus a new species from New Caledonia, in another new genus Aureopterix. The New Zealand species Sabatinca zonodoxa Meyrick 1888, is synonymised with S. rosicoma Meyrick 1914 and placed in a new monotypic genus Zealandopterix. Finally, a new genus Nannopterix is erected for a new species from New Caledonia. The assemblage of four new genera (excluding Austromartyria) together comprise the basal lineage of Micropterigidae, previously referred to as the ‘Australian-group.’ All five new genera are distinguished from Sabatinca s.str., the focus of diversity in the region (confined to New Caledonia and New Zealand), but not revised here.

New material collected from the Western Pacific has necessitated a revision of family Podospongiidae and the establishment of two new genera, Neopodospongia gen. nov. and Diplopodospongia gen. nov. Neopodospongia gen. nov. was established for a group of sponges characterised by a leathery ectosome, strongyloxeas, aciculospinorhabds, and sigmoidal protospinorhabds. Diplopodospongia gen. nov., was established for a group of thinly encrusting deep-water sponges that have anisoxeas and dumbbell-shaped spinorhabds. Eight new species of Podospongiidae are described here: two species of Podospongia du Bocage, 1869; P. virga sp. nov., from northern New Zealand and P. colini sp. nov., from Indonesia, three species of Neopodospongia from New Zealand; N. pagei gen. nov. sp. nov., N. bergquistae gen. nov. sp. nov., and N. exilis gen. nov. sp. nov., and three species of Diplopodospongia; D. rara gen. nov. sp. nov. and D. teliformis gen. nov. sp. nov. from New Zealand, and D. macquariensis gen. nov. sp. nov. from the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone surrounding Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean. In addition, the Irish encrusting sponge P. normani (Stephens 1915) has been reassigned to Neopodospongia gen. nov. An updated identification key to Podospongiidae genera is included.

Planthoppers of the family Cixiidae Spinola, 1839 are economically important owing to their ability to transmit phytoplasmas causing yellows-type diseases. The tribe Gelastocephalini Emeljanov, one of 16 tribes within the subfamily Cixiinae, has never been revised comprehensively. Twenty new genera (Aubirestus, Balyadimetopia, Barbonia, Candicarina, Corylonga, Fletcherolus, Gelastocaledonia, Gurrundus, Guttala, Hartliebia, Holgus, Larivierea, Lipsia, Melanoclypeus, Novotarberus, Payastylus, Rokebia, Schuerrera, Wernindia, Yarnikada) and 50 new species (Aubirestus semicirculatus, Balyadimetopia frederi, B. krahalla, B. marci, Barbonia spectabilis, Candicarina geroldi, C. pulchra, Carolus carinatus, C. stiriae, Corylonga aaroni, C. krottendorfi, C. leighi, C. lobata, C. loisae, C. mahmudae, C. triangula, Fletcherolus lanceolatus, F. monospinosus, Gelastocaledonia monteithi, Gelastocephalus velifer, Gurrundus fuscomarginatus, G. nectostylus, Guttala bernhardtae, G. mona, G. nickeli, G. robierae, Hartliebia towinna, Holgus ancistrus, H. liafredis, H. spiralis, H. unispinosus, Larivierea yalthi, L. yokunna, Lipsia mystrostylus, Melanoclypeus cristatus, M. uncinatus, Novotarberus flagellospinosus, N. pseudorphninus, N. remanei, Payastylus brichrius, P. gekiae, P. kernae, Rokebia australis, Ronaldia emeljanovi, Schuerrera clypeocarinata, S. ecarinata, ,Wernindia bubalis, W. lorda, W. rhomboidea, Yarnikada ulliae) are described. This increases the number of known Gelastocephalini from seven to 27 genera and from nine to 60 species. A new combination, Novotarberus jacobii, is proposed for Gelastocephalus jacobii from New Caldedonia and Cixius merula was transferred into the genus Schuerrera, resulting in a new combination, Schuerrera merula. A preliminary cladistic analysis of morphological data including all species of Gelastocephalini supported the monophyly of the tribe and its genera. The short male anal style is recognised as a synapomorphy for the tribe. The subtribe Rhigedanina was shown to be monophyletic whereas Gelastocephalina is paraphyletic. Three alternative hypotheses are presented to explain the current distribution of the tribe, which is restricted to Australia and New Caledonia. The species Novotarberus jacobii and Gelastocaledonia monteithi seem to be Gondwanan relicts.
