During our survey of the diversity of woody litter fungi in China and Thailand, three Hermatomyces species were collected from dead woody twigs of Dipterocarpus sp. (Dipterocarpaceae) and Ehretia acuminata (Boraginaceae). Both morphology and multigene analyses revealed two taxa as new species (Hermatomyces turbinatus and H. jinghaensis) and the remaining collections as new records of H. sphaericus. Hermatomyces turbinatus is characterized by 1) dimorphic conidia, having circular to oval lenticular conidia and 2) turbinate conidia consisting of two columns with two septa composed of 2–3 cells in each column. Hermatomyces jinghaensis is characterized by dimorphic conidia, having circular to oval lenticular conidia and clavate or subcylindrical to cylindrical conidia and consisting of one or two columns with 6–8 cells in each column. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS, tub2, tef1-α and rpb2 sequence data supports the placement of these new taxa within Hermatomycetaceae with high statistical support.

During our survey into the diversity of woody litter fungi across the Greater Mekong Subregion, three rhytidhysteron-like taxa were collected from dead woody twigs in China and Thailand. These were further investigated based on morphological observations and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses of a combined DNA data matrix containing SSU, LSU, ITS, and tef1-α sequence data. A new species of Rhytidhysteron, R. xiaokongense sp. nov. is introduced with its asexual morph, and it is characterized by semi-immersed, subglobose to ampulliform conidiomata, dark brown, oblong to ellipsoidal, 1-septate, conidia, which are granular in appearance when mature. In addition to the new species, two new records from Thailand are reported viz. Rhytidhysteron tectonae on woody litter of Betula sp. (Betulaceae) and Fabaceae sp. and Rhytidhysteron neorufulum on woody litter of Tectona grandis (Lamiaceae). Morphological descriptions, illustrations, taxonomic notes and phylogenetic analyses are provided for all entries.

During a survey on diversity of freshwater fungi along a north-south latitudinal gradient in Asia, three fresh specimens of Minimelanolocus were collected from submerged wood in streams in northwestern Yunnan Province, China. Based on their distinct morphological features and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU and SSU sequence data, Minimelanolocus nujiangensis and M. clavatus are described as new species and M. submersus was recollected from Yunnan, China. Illustrations and descriptions with notes of the three species are provided. This study increases the known diversity of Minimelanolocus and enriches freshwater fungal resources.

Asexual morph members of Tetraplosphaeriaceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) are generally hyphomycetes and usually found as saprobes occurring on various hosts in lentic habitats. Two isolates of a novel species, Tetraploa aquatica sp. nov., was collected from submerged decaying wood in Dulong river and a stream of Gaoligongshan mountain in Yunnan Province, China. The new species is characterized by short-cylindrical conidia, composed of 4-euseptate, short-cylindrical vertical columns which are verrucose at the base and with 4-setose vertical septate appendages. Tetraploa aquatica can be easily distinguished from other Tetraploa species by their columns which are 2–3-septate, aguttulate, vertical, setose appendaged which tend to remain parallel to one another apically. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS and SSU sequence data support its natural placement in Tetraploa. Detailed description and illustrations of this species and comparisons with other morphologically similar taxa in Tetraploa are provided.

Xiphinema hangzhouensesp. n. is described from the rhizosphere ofMagnolia grandiflorain Hangzhou, China. The new species is characterised by having a monodelphic reproductive system, slim body, total stylet = 186-192μm long and vulva located anteriorly at 27.6-31.2% of total body length. The new species has a gonad 400-450μm long with a simple uterus and no Z-organ. The female tail is elongated conoid with a rounded terminus. The species has four juvenile stages and no male was found. The polytomous identification codes ofX. hangzhouensesp. n. are A1, B4, C2, D23, E12, F2, G2, H2, I23, J2, K2, L1. The new species is morphologically similar toX. winotoi. Phylogenetic analyses of the 28S rRNA, ITS rRNA, 18S rRNA and partialCOIgene sequences ofX. hangzhouensesp. n. and some closely relatedXiphinemaspecies revealed that the new taxon clustered with high statistical support withX. radicicolaandX. setariae.

Four specimens of Phallus were collected during surveys in a Pinus armandii forest in Baoshan, Yunnan Province, China. Macro- and micro-characteristics, together with Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequence data, showed that the four specimens belong to a new species, here named Phallus haitangensis. The ITS phylogenetic analyses, morphological descriptions, color photographs, and line drawings are provided, and compared with closely related species in the genus.

A new species of the genus Gonyosoma Wagler is described from Yunnan Province, China. The new species closely resembles G. prasinum (Blyth), but it is differentiated from the latter species by the following characters: precloacal plate divided, iris blue and inside of mouth greyish-white in life. Based on phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence data, the new species is recovered as the sister species to G. prasinum by Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses. The uncorrected pairwise distance between the new species and other species of the genus Gonyosoma ranged from 11.78% to 17.07% calculated using the mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence. This discovery increases the number of Gonyosoma species to seven.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium yunnanensis (Orchidaceae; Epidendroideae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Based on morphological and molecular analyses, we demonstrate that this new species is similar to C. floribundum, but it differs in its smaller size, leaves 5–15 cm, shorter scape, white flowers with pale purplish markings on its sepals and petals, lip with purplish red blotch, petals narrowly falcate oblong and lip midlobe nearly round with column foot 1.5–2.0 mm long. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. yunnanensis as a new species.

Marinophialophora garethjonesii sp. nov., representing a novel genus Marinophialophora gen. nov., associated with the basidiomycete fungus, Halocyphina on mangrove wood from Phetchaburi, Thailand, is described and illustrated. Marinophialophora morphologically resembles Phialophora and Junctospora (Herpotrichiellaceae, Chaetothyriales) in having macronematous, unbranched or branched conidiophores, globose to subglobose, solitary, acrogenous, pale to subhyaline, aseptate, conidia in chains and phialidic conidiogenous cells. Marinophialophora mainly differs from other related genera due to its conidia borne in basipetally developing branched chains and septate conidiophores. Phylogenetic analyses of a combined ITS, LSU and SSU sequence data show that Marinophialophora garethjonesii constitutes an independent lineage with high statistical support basal to the genus Exophiala within the family Herpotrichiellaceae (Chaetothyriales). The new marine taxon is described herein with illustrations and relationships inferred from DNA sequence data.

This study embodies description of a novel Monochaetia species, from dead leaf of a Quercus sp. collected from Lijiang in Yunnan Province, China. Morphologically, it conforms to the characters of Monochaetia by presence of single apical and basal appendage on the conidia. The new species forms a sister clade to M. ilexae in the combined LSU-ITS and TUB2 sequence data based phylogenetic analyses and remain distinct from the latter species in having larger conidia, long apical appendage, long basal appendage and long conidiogenous cells. Therefore, we introduce Monochaetia sinensis as a novel taxon with a comprehensive description and illustration.

Abstract The cosmopolitan Ganoderma is an important pathogen on arboreal plant hosts. Ganoderma is particularly diverse in tropical and temperate regions. It has long been used as traditional medicine because of its beneficial medicinal properties and chemical constituents. In this study, Ganoderma collections were made in tropical regions of Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and temperate Yunnan Province, China. The specimens are described based on micro-macro characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of combined ITS, LSU, TEF1α, and RPB2 sequence data. In this comprehensive study, we report 22 Ganoderma species from temperate and tropical regions of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), namely G. adspersum , G. applanatum , G. australe , G. calidophilum , G. ellipsoideum , G. flexipes , G. gibbosum , G. heohnelianum , G. hochiminhense , G. leucocontextum , G. lingzhi , G. lucidum , G. multiplicatum , G. multipileum , G. myanmarens e , G. orbiforme , G. philippii , G. resinaceum , G. sinense , G. subresinosum , G. williamsianum , and G. tsugae . Of these species, 12 were collected from Yunnan Province, China; three species, were collected from Laos; three species, 2 new records, and one new species were collected from Myanmar; 15 species, and four new records were collected from Thailand; and one new species was collected from Vietnam. Comprehensive descriptions, color photographs of macro and micro characteristics, the distribution of Ganoderma in the GMS and worldwide, and a phylogenetic tree showing the placement of all the Ganoderma reported from the GMS are provided.
