The genus Didymocorypha Wood-Mason, 1877 (Eremiaphilidae, Iridinae) has only been recorded in South Asia, including a sole species D. lanceolata (Fabricius). Here, we firstly extend its distribution to China, with description of one new species D. libaiisp. nov.Didymocorypha libaiisp. nov. lives in an area about 3000 meters above sea level on the southern slope of the Himalayas (Tibet in China), one of the highest-altitude inhabited areas of mantis in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also the first recorded Oriental mantis species in which both sexes are wingless. Life history of the new species, necessary illustrations and ecological images are provided. The distribution of the new Didymocorypha species is discussed and mapped.

This paper contains a report on a collection of parasitic protozoa from the blood of some vertebrate animals of Uganda.Seven new species and a number of parasites recorded for new hosts are described. New observations on some known parasites are also recorded.An account is given of the life history of the crocodile haemogregarine. It is shown that the schizogony of Hepatozoon pettiti (nomen novum for Haemogregarina pettiti) occurs in the liver of the crocodile, while the sporogony takes place in Glossina palpalis, its intermediate host.A list of all the blood parasites found, together with their hosts, is given.

Material collected in Loch Tannoch was allowed to macerate in a chemical nutrient. A rich crop of Euglena gracilis as well as other infusoria resulted. Eight months later, when the Euglena had encysted, many amoebae were found at the bottom of the receptacle. They constitute a new species, here named Amoeba hugonis. An average adult specimen, when extended, measures about 104x52·2µ. The nucleus consists of a central karyosome lying in the nuclear sap, separated from the cytoplasm by a wellmarked nuclear membrane. Between the latter and the karyosome is situated an achromatic ‘collar’ with chromatin particles embedded in it. Fission is described, but a study of mitosis has been deferred. The life-history of this small amoeba is very similar to that of the large A. proteus, &c. The cycle occupies two months. Chromidia begin to appear in the cytoplasm of the early adult. They give rise to spores, out of which amoebulae hatch.

Ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) mismatch has been shown to increase during exercise, especially in hypoxia. A possible explanation is subclinical interstitial edema due to high pulmonary capillary pressures. We hypothesized that this may be pathogenetically similar to high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) so that HAPE-susceptible people with higher vascular pressures would develop more exercise-induced VA/Q mismatch. To examine this, seven healthy people with a history of HAPE and nine with similar altitude exposure but no HAPE history (control) were studied at rest and during exercise at 35, 65, and 85% of maximum 1) at sea level and then 2) after 2 days at altitude (3,810 m) breathing both normoxic (inspired Po2 = 148 Torr) and hypoxic (inspired Po2 = 91 Torr) gas at both locations. We measured cardiac output and respiratory and inert gas exchange. In both groups, VA/Q mismatch (assessed by log standard deviation of the perfusion distribution) increased with exercise. At sea level, log standard deviation of the perfusion distribution was slightly higher in the HAPE-susceptible group than in the control group during heavy exercise. At altitude, these differences disappeared. Because a history of HAPE was associated with greater exercise-induced VA/Q mismatch and higher pulmonary capillary pressures, our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that exercise-induced mismatch is due to a temporary extravascular fluid accumulation.

A half a century ago, R. T. Leiper described a new species belonging to the genus Fasciola from specimens which he collected from hippopotami at the Murchison Falls, on the Victoria Nile in Uganda, in the summer of 1907. This species, Fasciola nyanzae, was found in the bile ducts of the liver, and in most instances the specimens were somewhat macerated owing to the length of time that had elapsed before the animal could be recovered from the water. Nevertheless, the characteristic shape of these liver flukes and the restriction of the branched testes to the anterior third of the body made it possible to recognise them as being different from all other species of the genus known at that time.

AbstractThe Antarctic Ice Sheet responds quickly to regime changes, and time lags in its fluctuations are relatively small. During the Pleistocene glacial stages of the Northern Hemisphere, world-wide temperature reductions reduced the plasticity of the ice sheet and made it thicker. The amount of thickening depended on the conditions at the ice base but it was small, for mechanical and thermal reasons. Also, during the northern stages, accumulation over Antarctica was probably less than now, but this too had little effect on the thickness of the ice sheet. The mass budget of the ice sheet alone, without the ice shelves, probably remained strongly positive; the ice sheet probably existed throughout the Pleistocene and is unlikely to disappear in the future. The area of the ice sheet is determined chiefly by the elevation of the “grounding line”, where the peripheral ice cliffs and ice shelves begin to float. During the northern stages, world-wide lowerings of sea-level displaced the grounding line downwards and northwards, and allowed the ice sheet to advance by amounts which account for nearly all the evidence for previous greater glaciations. In summary, the glacial history of most ice-free areas is governed not so much by climatic as by sea-level changes. Therefore, Antarctic glacial fluctuations were dependent on and in phase with those of the Northern Hemisphere. The field evidence from Antarctica has little bearing on the ultimate causes of glacial fluctuations, which might however be determined by field work on the planet Mars.

During a visit to Professor Fernald, in Amherst, Mass., last spring, he showed me a Nepticula, bred from Apple, which he had described in manuscript as a new species, but which he afterwards had suspected to be Micropteryx pomivorella, Packard.From reading the description and life-history of packard's species, I felt sure that it was a Nepticula and presumably the same as Professor Fernald's species, and a week after, while studying the collection in the Agassiz Museum, Cambridge, I obtained definite proof that we were right.

The present paper records an investigation into a new and unusual suctorian, found epizoic on the cuticle of the Cirripede, Conchoderma aurita. The Cirripede host was obtained from a Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus), in the S. Pacific. The collection was made at the Whaling Factory Ship Southern Empress, by the Whaling Inspector, Commander H. Buckle, and the material was then sent to Britain with the collections of H.M.R.S. Discovery. The new form, Metephelota coronata, was first discovered by Professor H. Graham Cannon in the course of an anatomical study on Conchoderma. Recognising that M. coronata might be a new member of the Ephelotidæ (Collin, 1912), Professor Cannon, with great kindness, transferred the whole of the available material to me for further study. This has shown that the material consists of a single new species, generically distinct from Ephelota and Podocyathus, the two previously known genera of the Ephelotidæ.

Pulse turbocharging, which had a long history of successful operation in sea-level installations on two-stroke-cycle gas engines, did not give satisfactory results at high altitude as evidenced by increased thermal loading and reduced load-carrying ability. Proper application of the constant-pressure system overcame these difficulties. The underlying theory explaining these results, supported by factory and field developments, is given in this paper. Start-up, operational, and maintenance experiences are given on constant-pressure-turbocharged, two-cycle, uniflow engines at high altitude.
