Abstract Photocatalytic activity of semiconductors is affected by the nature of metal dopant. To study the effect of non-transition and transition metal on the physical and optical properties of TiO2 based photocatalysts; Al and Ni-doped TiO2 thin films respectively were prepared via a sol-gel dip-coating method. The effect of the photocatalysis process on the properties of TiO2 based thin films was investigated. The photocatalytic activity was calculated from methylene blue dye degradation under sunlight irradiation. XRD results show that un-doped TiO2 films were grown with anatase phase, whereas, the Ni and Ni/Al-doped TiO2 films show Ti4O7 single phase. The presence of Al preferred the rutile phase. No phases related to NiO or Al2O3 were detected. Ni-TiO2 photocatalyst shows high photocatalytic activity (~ 93%) thanks to the high content of O and Ti, wide bandgap (3.35 eV), low crystal size (6.87 nm), high film thickness (288 nm), and high surface roughness (44.5 nm). After photocatalysis, all the films show a decrease in O content and thickness, whereas the indirect bandgap values were increased which suggesting the reuse with low photocatalytic activity.

In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) doped with Sn thin films were deposited on the glass substrate at 550 °C by dip-coating technique using the solution synthesized by sol-gel method. The structural, surface morphology, optical and photocatalytic property of thin films were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the Sn-doping greatly changed the microstructure, morphology and optical properties of ZnO films, which may contribute to the enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Additionally, the photocatalytic activity was investigated using methylene blue  dye under solar irradiation, with has high UV index from 7 to 8. The results indicated that Sn-doped ZnO had a higher photocatalytic activity and Sn dopant greatly increased the photocatalytic activity of ZnO thin film.

Co doped TiO2 nanoparticles and thin films were prepared from Ti(OC4H9)4 by sol-gel method. The influence of Co-doping and its content on the crystallite structure and phase composition of TiO2 was systematically investigated by SEM and XRD, the precursor was analysed by TGA. The photocatalytic activity of nanocomposites was investigated in the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange. The results indicated that the inhibitory effect of Co-doping on the phase transformation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile receded obviously when the calcination temperature was changed to 650°C from 550°C. Under the ultraviolet light radiation, the favourite Co-doping concentration was 1% and the obtained Co doped TiO2 thin films exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than nanoparticles and pure TiO2 in the photodegradation of methyl orange.

LiNO3-doped TiO2 thin films on glass-ceramics were prepared by sol-gel dip coating. The influence of LiNO3 addition on the phase transformation temperature was studied. The transformation temperatures of non-crystalline to anatase and anatase to rutile are originally 520°C and 880°C without the addition of LiNO3. By adding 5%LiNO3 the two transformation temperatures decrease to 440°C and 580°C, respectively. The average size of the particles was found to be around 40nm for the LiNO3- doped TiO2 film annealed at 600°C.

Nickel oxide (NiO) thin films were successfully deposited by sol-gel dip-coating method on glass substrates. The structural, morphological and optical properties in addition to the photocatalytic activity of the prepared films were investigated. The results show that the films have a polycrystalline NiO cubic structure with dense NiO grains and average optical transmittance in the visible region. The photocatalytic properties of the films were studied through the degradation of methylene blue and 89% of degradation was achieved for 4.5h of solar light irradiation exposure which indicates the capability of NiO photocatalytic activity.
