This study is focused on evaluating the trace metal levels in water and tissues of two commercial fish species Arius thalassinus and Pennahia anea that were collected from Kapar and Mersing coastal waters. The concentrations of Fe, Zn, Al, As, Cd and Pb in these coastal waters and muscle, liver and gills tissues of the fishes were quantified. The relationship among the metal concentrations and the height and weight of the two species were also examined. Generally, the iron has the highest concentrations in both water and the fish species. However, Cd in both coastal waters showed high levels exceeding the international standards. The metal level concentration in the sample fishes are in the descending order livers > gills > muscles. A positive association between the trace metal concentrations and weight and length of the sample fishes was investigated. Fortunately the level of these metal concentrations in fish has not exceeded the permitted level of Malaysian and international standards.

Highlight ResearchThe Set Net was identified and recorded.Length and weight of the catch of set net was analyzed. AbstractSet net fisheries are made according to traditional fishing gears method in the coastal waters of Sungai Sembilang, Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia. These fisheries system are the passive structure of gear used to catch fish that swim in shallow water with muddy substrate. This study focused on determining the species variety and the possible future of set net fisheries in Sungai Sembilang. Catch composition of set net was investigated based on the catch data during July to December 2020 and continued from January to February 2021. The catch data was recorded by a research assistant on site during fishing season. The data consist of species, length and weight of all catches recorded. Total catch of 60 fish species belonging to 23 families were captured during this study period. Ariidae (31.73%), Clupeidae (11.56%), and Scatophagidae (7.96%) were determined as dominant families caught this set net. The total dominant catch amount of species Plicofollis argyropleuron (18.71%), Nemapteryx caelata (9.96%), and Anodontostoma chacunda (8.92%) compromised 37.6% of the total catch. This type of fishing gear can be used by local fisherman to catch fishes and can prevent trawl net from come closer to the shore. This study would provide some general useful information about the status of set net fisheries as well as the species abundance caught from the set net.

The environmental fate of rare earth elements (REEs) in the Malaysian environment is limitedly known; however, industrial emission is increasing. This study focused on the REE assessment of the surface sediments obtained from rocky shore ecosystems along the Peninsular Malaysia coastal waters, on deliberating interspatial variability, and on describing their partitioning. Samples were treated with the Teflon Bomb technique, and the concentration of 14 natural REEs was measured through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Through quality control practices, the results were verified by employing a standard reference material BCR 667. The tendency of REE distribution was the most mutual property of particular places worldwide and in Malaysia. Among REEs present in sediment, strong correlations were observed, which indicated REEs they behave coherently to each other in different processes of geochemical fractionation. The contaminant metals, namely manganese, arsenic, cadmium and copper, were strongly correlated with REEs (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05); hence, these metals may be nonanthropogenic in origin because REEs are geogenic in origin. The enrichment factor (EF) values of the comparative results were divided by the region-specified deficiency to minimal enrichment in all the regions, except in the east coast region, which presented considerable enrichment, suggesting a probability of discharge of the anthropogenic effluent. The results of the analysis normalized to chondrite presented patterns of low atomic weight rare earth elements (LREEs) enrichment, gradual downward pattern and depletion through high atomic weight rare earth elements (HREEs) concentrations.
