To investigate the relationship between stem colonizing ability of Verticillium and wilt disease development, the colonization capacities of Verticillium dahliae, race 1 or race 2, were compared in near-isolines of the cultivar Craigella, with (Ve+) and without (Ve−) Ve-gene resistance, and in the cultivar IRAT-L3, which also lacks the Ve-gene. Only the Ve+/V.d.1 interaction was resistant to disease. Lateral and vertical invasiveness of the pathogen were assessed cytologically and fungal biomass was monitored by PCR-based diagnostics. The pathogen was most aggressive in the Ve−/V.d.1 interaction; colonization capacity was reduced in the other five combinations, but most severely, and equivalently, in Ve+/V.d.1, IRAT/V.d.1, and IRAT/V.d.2. Further study of the development and role of the vascular coating response in IRAT-L3 indicated a pattern of expression similar to that observed in other susceptible plants, and it was concluded that the reduced colonization of this cultivar by V. dahliae resulted from another unknown defensive mechanism. Stem colonizing ability that is compatible with resistance in one cultivar and race combination may promote symptom expression and even death in another. ABSTRACTThe role of Trichocompost and KCl fertilizer to control Fusarium wilt disease on onion in sandy soil. Fusarium wilt on onion is an interesting disease it is can loss the onion yield. The purpose of research to study trichocompost and KCl fertilizer role to control Fusarium wilt disease on ann onion. The research design used a Factorial Randomized Block Design with 2 factors. The first factor is 4 levels trichocompost, it is: without trichocompost (T0), trichocompost 10 t.ha-1 dosage (T1), trichocompost 20 t.ha-1 dosage (T2), trichocompost 30 t.ha-1 dosage (T3). The second factor is 3 levels KCl fertilizer, it is: without KCl (K0), KCl 100 kg.ha-1 dosage (K1), KCl 200 kg.ha-1 dosage (K2). Result of this research showed the application of trichocompost 10 t.ha-1 dosage and KCl 100 kg.ha-1 dosage can inhibit Fusarium wilt incubation time, can inhibit the patogen development with effective value 89,23%, the single factor it is aplication trichocompost 10 t.ha-1 dosage and trichocompost 30 t.ha-1 dosage not significant to dried onion bulb weight per clump of onion plant.Key words: Trichocompost, KCl fertilizer, Fusarium wilt disease, onion, sandy soil.ABSTRAKPenyakit layu Fusarium merupakan salah satu penyakit penting dapat menurunkan produksi bawang merah hingga 50%. Tujuan penelitian untuk mengetahui peranan trichokompos dan pupuk KCl dalam mengendalikan penyakit layu fusarium pada tanaman bawang merah. Penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok faktorial dua faktor perlakuan. Faktor pertama 4 taraf dosis trichokompos yaitu: tanpa trichokompos (T0), trichokompos dosis 10 t.ha-1 (T1), trichokompos dosis 20 t.ha-1 (T2), trichokompos dosis 30 t.ha-1 (T3). Faktor kedua 3 taraf dosis pupuk KCl yaitu: tanpa pupuk KCl (K0), pupuk KCl dosis 100 KCl kg.ha-1 (K1), pupuk KCl dosis 200 KCl kg.ha-1 (K2). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pemberian trichokompos 10 t.ha-1 dan pupuk KCl 100 kg.ha-1 dapat memperpanjang masa inkubasi penyakit, menekan serangan penyakit layu Fusarium dengan nilai efektivitas sangat baik (89,23%), perlakuan tunggal trichokompos dosis 10 t.ha-1 tidak berbeda nyata dengan dosis 30 t.ha-1 terhadap bobot umbi kering per rumpun tanaman bawang merah.Kata kunci: penyakit layu Fusarium, pupuk KCl, tanah berpasir, tanaman bawang merah, trichokompos.

A wilt disease occurred on greenhouse-grown eggplants (Solanum melongena L.) at Hanam and Yeojoo, Korea, in 1997. Lower leaves on the 2-month-old wilted eggplants exhibited gradual yellowing, interveinal necrosis, and marginal crinkling and dropped prematurely. Vascular tissues of diseased stems were discolored and turned black. Vertical sections of the stems revealed that the pith had been colonized by the fungus. The disease progressed from lower parts of the plants upward. Incidence of diseased eggplants in greenhouses was 5% on 23 May 1997. Although the incidence increased to 10% on 13 June, it remained constant through early July. Fungal isolates from discolored vascular tissues were initially whitish to cream color on potato-dextrose agar, which turned black due to the formation of microsclerotia. The fungus also produced abundant verticillate conidiophores with phialides and conidia. Based on these cultural and morphological characteristics, the fungus was identified as Verticillium dahliae Klebahn. Pathogenicity tests by root cutting, root dipping, or soil drenching resulted in similar symptoms observed in the naturally infected eggplants. Symptoms were first observed on lower leaves of each eggplant 3 weeks after inoculation. Isolation from symptomatic leaves of the inoculated eggplants yielded V. dahliae. This is the first report of occurrence of Verticillium wilt of eggplant in Korea.
