Earlier studies on the innovation process in the high-tech manufacturing industry failed to take environmental pollution into account, making it difficult to estimate green innovation efficiency in the industry. From a perspective of innovation value chain, this paper decomposes green innovation process in the high-tech manufacturing industry into two stages: R&D stage and achievement transformation stage; a network DEA approach considering undesirable outputs is utilized to estimate the green innovation efficiency in China’s high-tech manufacturing industry. Compared with the method of conventional innovation efficiency without considering environmental pollution, the estimation method for green innovation efficiency can not only avoid bias of estimation results of provinces producing low pollution emissions like Inner Mongolia and Hainan but also reflect the volatility in efficiency of the high-tech manufacturing industry before and after the implementation of the environmental law.

The development of pharmaceutical companies, which is an important part of the national economy and industry, is closely related to people’s livelihood issues. With the era of big data, this paper uses the two-stage DEA and Malmquist method to evaluate the efficiency of listed Chinese pharmaceutical companies. From a static and dynamic perspective, it analyses the total factor productivity index, pure efficiency change index, scale efficiency index, and so on. The results show that government subsidies have not had a positive impact on most Chinese pharmaceutical companies, and for films, diseconomies of scale caused by rapid expansion should be avoided.

Urbanisation has led to the development of new markets, including that for cereals for human consumption, where maize cultivation has taken on an important role among smallholder producers in some countries, such as Cameroon. However, the cultivation of maize in the centre region of Cameroon raises several questions, including the efficiency of these farmers. This article presents the level and determinants of technical performance of smallholder maize farmers. The research method was based on field surveys. The study was carried out between September 2019 and December 2020 in the Centre Region of Cameroon. The research methods used included field work, field surveys through semi-structured interviews on 1060 (545 women and 515 men) maize farm managers who were selected in a reasoned method based on the file of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cameroon. Data from the study was analysed using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method and the Tobit model allowed us to identify the determinants of the performance of these maize farms. The results show that the efficiency scores of the production and income outputs are 0.7773 and 0.6707, respectively, and provide evidence for the inefficiency of smallholder maize farmers in the Centre Region. Gender, cropping system, maize variety and number of treatments have a significant and positive influence on the productive efficiency of the farms while the only determinant that influences the income efficiency of the farmers is the maize variety used. Ultimately, smallholder maize farmers are not performing well in terms of both production and income. Value chain actors need to act on three main pillars around family farms: socio-economic characteristics (the place of women and education policy), the production system (access to quality seeds, and production techniques) and institutional factors (access to extension, financing and membership to a producer organization).

Characterized by large scale, variety, fast generation, and extremely high value but low density, big data can be used to mine effective information, provide users with auxiliary decision-making, and realize its own value. Based on the nonoriented SBM and the network DEA model, this paper systematically and objectively evaluates the technological innovation efficiency of strategic emerging industries in all provinces of China in 2002–2013. The study found the following. (1) The overall technological efficiency of China’s strategic emerging industries is low. The average of comprehensive efficiency is 0.278; of 26 provinces, only 8 are above the average level. (2) The efficiency in the commercialization stage of scientific and technological achievements of strategic emerging industries in the whole country and most of the provinces is higher than that in the stage of knowledge innovation. The inefficiency of the knowledge innovation stage restricts the efficiency promotion of China’s strategic emerging industries. (3) The overall innovation efficiency of strategic emerging industries has been increasing from 2002 to 2013. In comparison, the growth rate of pure technical efficiency is larger than that of scale efficiency. (4) The overall efficiency, the efficiency in the knowledge innovation stage, and the efficiency in the commercialization stage of scientific and technological achievements of the eastern region are higher than those of the central and western regions.
