Recommendations for Natural Resources Conservation in the Influence Areas of Cities

As urban development has become an increasing problem, urban planning is required to integrate social and economical needs with the sustainable use of natural resources. Since the urban development is favoured by the amount and diversity of the natural resources (land, mineral resources, green areas, aquatic surfaces) available in the area of influence of the cities and its negative externalities aren't limited inside the urban limits the conservation of those resources became an important issue in the scientific circles. Lately planners have been using GIS techniques and remote sensing, based on international and local databases, in finding the most probable scenarios and the best available solutions in order to promote a sustainable development of urban areas. Four models of natural resources conservation have proved effective in the influence areas of cities: protected areas, yellow-green belts, regional parks and oxygen generating surfaces. The establishment and management of these can be better realised by GIS techniques, because of their efficiency and ease of use, the suitability and general availability of data.

Many developing countries' national plans and urbanization policies lack effective measures to address environmental degradation and support the sustainable use of natural resources. Sustainable urban development policies, the most important pillar of socio-economic development, have not been produced and/or integrated to the urban planning system in Turkey. Suggesting that economic growth may be equaled to wealth and welfare is only possible in environments where certain requirements are satisfied. These requirements may be enumerated as not surpassing the natural renovation capacity, minimizing pollution risks, optimal protection and preservation of non-renewable resources, use of natural resources according to protection-utilization principles. This chapter firstly addresses planning tradition in conceptual background, and analyses relationship of this convention with urban development. Secondly and final phase it addresses the ecological influences created by the urban development shaped by urban planning tradition on the environment, and presents suggestions for solution.

The Andean region has always fascinated travelers and scholars who are interested in biodiversity. Monumental works have been written on mineral resources, flora and fauna. And efforts are being made to protect the richness of biodiversity, especially in protected natural areas. But the threats from the advance of extractive activities and the consequences of climate change are becoming more and more shocking and are avoiding the achievement of sustainable development. For this reason, the production of knowledge and its spread in quality scientific journals is an urgent need, based on data from reality itself and its resources, in light of the scientific literature produced. In this scenario, the Highlands Research Journal wishes to invite everyone to contribute with their proposals to face the challenge of environmental degradation, the exploitation of natural resources, the effects of climate change and the persistence of socio-environmental conflicts, of which it is essential to take into account social facts, in the search for possible solutions to achieve the balance between man and nature and guide activities towards the conservation, rational and sustainable use of natural resources. History is full of lessons that should not be forgotten, about the wealth of Andean natural resources and the enormous body of knowledge that traveling scientists have left us in recent centuries

The development of Polish cities leads to the urbanization of the surrounding rural areas. This process induces changes in the land-use structure, which is manifested by the expansion of urbanized and developed areas at the expense of open areas. The National Urban Development Plan until 2030 has introduced the concept of obligatory green belts around metropolitan and regional hubs to prevent uncontrolled suburbanization and to promote rational urban development. Green belts are protective areas that serve numerous functions, increase the quality of life and promote the ecological cohesion of space. Green belts limit urban sprawl and maintain urban open spaces that are accessible to city residents for recreational purposes. They also contribute to the local climate and act as sanitary cordons. The main components of green belts are green spaces, river valleys and forests. Therefore, the size as well as the distribution of forests around urban centers are important considerations. This study analyzes the distribution and spatial continuity of forests and the spatial relationships (spatial autocorrelations) between the forests situated in the rural suburbia of Olsztyn in north-eastern Poland. Suburban municipalities were analyzed at the level of cadastral districts (villages). The aim of the analysis was to evaluate the spatial continuity of forests by grouping similar objects and identifying areas which could be included in green belts. The location quotient (LQ) and Gini’s coefficient were taken into account in the analysis of the spatial distribution of forests. Local Moran’s statistics were calculated and spatial clusters were identified to illustrate the diversity of the examined suburban space based on the similarity of the neighboring objects (cadastral districts) and to determine the statistical significance of these relationships. The results of the study reveal spatial irregularities and disproportions in the distribution of forests in the suburban zone of Olsztyn as well as the presence of local instabilities and discontinuities. The applied methods are a useful tool for evaluating, planning and optimizing the spatial distribution of forests around large urban centers. Spatial management solutions in the suburban zone should aim to eliminate spatial discontinuities and improve the quality of life of the local communities.

We are glad to present the multi-authored monograph “Energy- and resource-saving technologies of developing the raw-material base of mining regions” Present-day conditions require creating a scientific and methodological base for sustainable use of natural resources. The given monograph is aimed at dealing with these problems. There are presented results of researches into various aspects of developing the mineral material complex. The complete cycle of operations aimed at introducing energy- and resource-saving technologies from geological analysis of mineral resources to their processing and metal-roll production is under consideration. Much attention is paid to implementation of technologies followed up by reclamation of disturbed lands and water balance in mining regions. The multi-authored monograph is of great interest to mining scholars and young people mastering mining specialities at university. The monograph editors appreciate the authors’ contribution to the given edition.

The development of controlled and planned construction of peri-urban areas in Belgrade and Serbia did not exist in the last decades. Depending on different factors, urban area of Belgrade sprawles on fertile agricultural soil, often causing the accelerated or progressive changes in agricultural soil use. Evidently, that kind of city development is not sustainable from the viewpoint of natural resources protection (agricultural soil protection in the first place), nor from the viewpoint of entire environment protection. This paper analyses functional and environmental measures for agricultural soil use regulation in Belgrade region. Also, paper looks into the issues of concern for substantiation of means for soil regulation and protection in Serbia, especially in Belgrade, through analysis world's and domestic soil regulatives and new EU guidelines regarding sustainable soil use and urban development. The attention is drawn to protect agricultural hinterland of Belgrade region by basic planning arrangements. .
