A Semi-Discrete Approach for the Numerical Simulation of Freestanding Blocks

This chapter addresses the numerical modeling of freestanding rigid blocks by means of a semi-discrete approach. The pure rocking motion of single rigid bodies can be easily studied with the differential equation of motion, which can be solved by numerical integration or by linearization. However, when we deal with sliding and jumping motion of rigid bodies, the mathematical formulation becomes quite complex. In order to overcome this complexity, a Semi-Discrete Model (SMD) is proposed for the study of rocking motion of rigid bodies, in which the rigid body is considered as a mass element supported by springs and dashpots, in the spirit of deformable contacts between rigid blocks. The SMD can detect separation and sliding of the body; however, initial base contacts do not change, keeping a relative continuity between the body and its base. Extensive numerical simulations have been carried out in order to validate the proposed approach.

In this paper, we investigate the hydrodynamics of swimmers with three caudal fins: a round one corresponding to snakehead fish ( Channidae), an indented one corresponding to saithe ( Pollachius virens), and a lunate one corresponding to tuna ( Thunnus thynnus). A direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach with a self-propelled fish model was adopted. The simulation results show that the caudal fin transitions from a pushing/suction combined propulsive mechanism to a suction-dominated propulsive mechanism with increasing aspect ratio ( AR). Interestingly, different from a previous finding that suction-based propulsion leads to high efficiency in animal swimming, this study shows that the utilization of suction-based propulsion by a high- AR caudal fin reduces swimming efficiency. Therefore, the suction-based propulsive mechanism does not necessarily lead to high efficiency, while other factors might play a role. Further analysis shows that the large lateral momentum transferred to the flow due to the high depth of the high- AR caudal fin leads to the lowest efficiency despite the most significant suction.

The numerical simulation of flow process and heat transfer phenomena demands the solution of continuous differential equation and energy-conservation equations coupled with the continuity equation. The choosing of computation parameters in numerical simulation of computation domain have influence on accuracy of obtained results. The choose parameters, as mesh density, mesh type and computation procedures, for the numerical diffusion of computation domain were analysed and compared. The CFD simulation in ANSYS – Fluent was used for numerical simulation of 3D stational temperature flow of the computation domain.

Tethered Satellite Systems (TSS) have been used in various applications such as in performing space interferometry, orbit transfer and other relevant fields. As far as the operation system of a TSS is concerned, it is crucial to ensure that the tether will not go slack as its slackness would adversely affects the overall operation outcome due to an undesirable system dynamics. Therefore, it is important to investigate the types of conditions that will cause the tether slackness. Investigations on in-plane and out-of plane libration angles can be utilized to measure at what point that the tether will go slack. Based on previous research works, usually a rigid tether comprising of a uniformed mass is considered while the connecting two satellites are regarded as point masses in order to simplify the governing dynamics equation of motion. However, in order to develop a much more accurate modeling, a flexible tether is chosen by further incorporating the reeling mechanism, attitude dynamics of rigid bodies and tether deformations. Furthermore, a tether has a tendency to go slack if the in-plane and out-of plane libration angle exceeds 65° and 60° respectively regardless of the types of tether utilized whether it being a rigid or a flexible one. Thus, the tension of the tether will serves as a constraint and plotted against the in-plane and out-of plane libration motions that would be attained via the generalized forces. The results will then be analyzed to establish in-plane and out-of plane libration boundaries. Subsequently, the in-plane and out-of plane operation contrains are established for TSS corresponding to a reference mission.

In many problems from the field of textile engineering (e.g., fabric folding, motion of the sewing thread) it is necessary to investigate the motion of the objects in dynamic conditions, taking into consideration the influence of the forces of inertia and changing in the time boundary conditions. This paper deals with the model analysis of the motion of the flat textile structure using Lagrange's equations in two variants: without constraints and with constraints. The motion of the objects is under the influence of the gravity force. Lagrange's equations have been used for discrete model of the structure.

In order to analysis the force situation of the material which is discontinuity,we can used the new theory called peridynamics to slove it.Peridynamics theory is a new method of molecular dynamics that develops very quickly.Peridynamics theory used the volume integral equation to constructed the model,used the volume integral equation to calculated the PD force in the horizon.So It doesn’t need to assumed the material’s continuity which must assumed that use partial differential equation to formulates the equation of motion. Destruction and the expend of crack which have been included in the peridynamics’ equation of motion.Do not need other additional conditions.In this paper,we introduce the peridynamics theory modeling method and introduce the relations between peridynamics and classic theory of mechanics.We also introduce the numerical integration method of peridynamics.Finally implementation the numerical integration in prototype microelastic brittle material.Through these work to show the advantage of peridynamics to analysis the force situation of the material.

Abstract The dynamic environment of embarqued structures such as radars or more generally electronic equipments consists of impacts, sine and large power spectrum excitations. Under these real conditions and amongst different kinds of isolation, the passive damper with nonlinear parameters can provide good performances. This paper is concerned with the dynamic behavior of rigid bodies on highly nonlinear mounts. The numerical simulation and the experiment carried out, show that the load-deflection behavior of the dampers have to be slightly ajusted with respect to impact vibrations to obtain a well designed behavior.

С применением математической модели, включающей осредненные уравнения движения и дифференциальные уравнения переноса нормальных рейнольдсовых напряжений и скорости диссипации, выполнено численное моделирование эволюции безымпульсного закрученного турбулентного следа с ненулевым моментом количества движения за телом вращения. Получено, что начиная с расстояний порядка 1000 диаметров от тела течение становится автомодельным. На основе анализа результатов численных экспериментов построены упрощенные математические модели дальнего следа. Swirling turbulent jet flows are of interest in connection with the design and development of various energy and chemical-technological devices as well as both study of flow around bodies and solving problems of environmental hydrodynamics, etc. An interesting example of such a flow is a swirling turbulent wake behind bodies of revolution. Analysis of the known works on the numerical simulation of swirling turbulent wakes behind bodies of revolution indicates lack of knowledge on the dynamics of the momentumless swirling turbulent wake. A special case of the motion of a body with a propulsor whose thrust compensates the swirl is studied, but there is a nonzero integral swirl in the flow. In previous works with the participation of the authors, a numerical simulation of the initial stage of the evolution of a swirling momentumless turbulent wake based on a hierarchy of second-order mathematical models was performed. It is shown that a satisfactory agreement of the results of calculations with the available experimental data is possible only with the use of a mathematical model that includes the averaged equations of motion and differential equations for the transfer of normal Reynolds stresses along the rate of dissipation. In the present work, based on the above mentioned mathematical model, a numerical simulation of the evolution of a far momentumless swirling turbulent wake with a nonzero angular momentum behind the body of revolution is performed. It is shown that starting from distances of the order of 1000 diameters from the body the flow becomes self-similar. Based on the analysis of the results of numerical experiments, simplified mathematical models of the far wake are constructed. The authors dedicate this work to the blessed memory of Vladimir Alekseevich Kostomakha.

We present numerical simulation results showing that high dielectric materials (HDMs) when placed between the human body model and the body coil significantly alter the electromagnetic field inside the body. The numerical simulation results show that the electromagnetic field (E, B, and SAR) within a region of interest (ROI) is concentrated (increased). In addition, the average electromagnetic fields decreased significantly outside the region of interest. The calculation results using a human body model and HDM of Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) show that the mean local SAR was decreased by about 56% (i.e., 18.7 vs. 8.2 W/kg) within the body model.

Reduced 3D dynamic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) models are proposed in this paper based on a direct time-domain B-spline boundary element method (BEM). These models are used to simulate the motion of rigid bodies in infinite or semi-infinite fluid media in real, or near real, time. B-spline impulse response function (BIRF) techniques are used within the BEM framework to compute the response of the hydrodynamic system to transient forces. Higher-order spatial and temporal discretization is used in developing the kinematic FSI model of rigid bodies and computing its BIRFs. Hydrodynamic effects on the massless rigid body generated by an arbitrary transient acceleration of the body are computed by a mere superposition of BIRFs. Finally, the dynamic models of rigid bodies including inertia effects are generated by introducing the kinematic interaction model to the governing equation of motion and solve for the response in a time-marching scheme. Verification examples are presented and demonstrate the stability, accuracy, and efficiency of the proposed technique.
